it is theorised that the reason why humans have so much fat and so low muscle density is so that we could swim. It is likely that if this were the case then another species could have diverged from us and returned to the sea. Their lungs became better at processing oxygen and they reverted slightly to obtain gills on their ribs. this allows water to be taken in through the mouth and pushed out between the ribs after passing over the lungs. They developed webed hands and feet simply by mutation that caused the apoptosis of the skin between the fingers and toes not to occur as a fetus.
