2011-09-29 [Ŧhe Jøker]: The fastest animal in the world isn't the cheetah, its the peregrine falcon, and it can swoop at speeds of up to 202 mph

2011-09-29 [Ravenclaw]: During a study about the effects of rising economic costs scientists gave chimpanzees "coins" with which to purchase their favorite fruit. When the chimps became accustomed to the prices (going as far as to use correct change) the scientists raised the prices. Mayhem ensued when the chimps learned they could not purchase fruit for the old price. Almost immediately female chimps began bartering sex for currency in order to purchase the fruit they wanted.

I saw this on a documentary on Netflix and I'm 90% sure it was called Freakanomics.

2011-09-29 [XxTsomexX]: A goldfish's memory is only 3 seconds long.

2011-09-29 [WonderTweek]: #4 is a myth.

"It is a common myth that animals do not (as a rule) have sex for pleasure, or alternatively that humans, pigs (and perhaps dolphins and one or two species of primate) are the only species which do. This is sometimes formulated "animals mate only for reproduction"." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_sexual_behaviour

http://www.dolphincommunicationproject.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1145&Itemid=281

2011-09-30 [Blaithin]: I believe the Echidna is another egg laying mammal. Also, I think Emu's can't go backwards either which means the Australian Crest has no animals on it that can walk backwards :o

2011-09-30 [Ravenclaw]: We all have to remember that Josmar got these facts from books. If a couple of them are wrong then it's the book's fault not his.

2011-09-30 [Lord Josmar]: I looked up the Echidna and it is an egglaying mammal and is part of the same order as the platypus, so I changed those facts accordingly.

The dolphin thing seems to be in the air with debates for and against on both sides, but since it cannot be confirmed I have removed it.

I looked up the goldfish fact on wikipedia, because I had heard that too and wanted to make sure, and it says that they have a memory span of about three months and can actually be trained.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldfish#Intelligence

2011-09-30 [XxTsomexX]: Awww. I need to find an animal that has a short memory span, since I have one too, and I used to call it the goldfish syndrome

2011-10-02 [Yami]: There is a species of primate, (close to a chimp I think) that are bisexual. The females with rub their clits together and the males swing from branches and penis fence

A female hyena has such a long clit that they use them to dominate one another by using their clits to penetrate the lesser females.

A "Liger" is a very large wild cat that behaves like a house cat where as the "Tigon" is a very small wild cat who is very aggressive.

A female rat or rabbit is called a Doe and a male rat or rabbit is called a buck; a male donkey is a Jack and a female is a Jenny.

The Rose hair trantula is the most docile of the trantula family, it's hair is pink and will kick the hairs off it's stomach aiming at the eyes on an attacker.

A scorpion by definition is an arachnid but since the trantula as well as the camel spider and several other creatures identified as spiders lack the correct number of legs and/ or body segments, they are not arachnids by definition.

(These are all facts I've heard or watched tv shows on, so feel free to correct me ^^)

2011-10-02 [Lord Josmar]: Im going to have to post a link to my contribution page on all the sub-wikis.

Useless Contributions

2011-10-17 [Talos Cyrion]: if i where a rattlesnake i'd be a afraid of a skunk to....would make finding food a pain in the ass and forget having anything to do with the ladies haha

2011-10-17 [Lord Josmar]: It's really interesting because Skunks are one of the few mammals that will openly search out snakes to kill them should they think one is in the area.

It's enough of a fear that Rattlesnakes will actually refrain from rattling should a skunk come near.

2011-10-18 [Ŧhe Jøker]: I'm pretty sure most animals in the weasel family eat snakes.

2011-10-19 [Blaithin]: Many things eat snakes. That doesn't mean the snakes go out of their way to avoid them. Most venomous ones rely on that as defense enough, no need to try and hide. I wonder why they're so afraid of skunks though...

2011-10-19 [Talos Cyrion]: idk about the snake, but if it where me it'd be because they stink to high heaven and back which would make catching the next meal a pain in the ass

2011-10-19 [Lord Josmar]: Skunks don't eat them, as far as I read, they just kill them.

2011-10-19 [Ravenclaw]: I'd say it depends on the size. A good sized skunk can be pretty vicious. I wouldn't imagine a 6 lb skunk going after a 6 foot timber rattler though. Chicken snakes, garden snakes sure, but not something as massive as a rattle snake or a cottonmouth.

2013-05-31 [Teufelsweib]: fact 1 and 2 contradict each other :P

2013-05-31 [Lord Josmar]: Good catch.

2013-05-31 [Teufelsweib]: and well, there are 4 species of echnidas soooo technically there are still 5 living monotreme species :P

2013-05-31 [Lord Josmar]: Lol. Now your splitting hairs.
