"Whoa...." Akane said, looking around in awe at the fabulously elegant buildings. She came from a small community in the jungle and hadn't ever been exposed to anything of this nature. Despite the fight she was about to encounter, Akane really seemed excited about this place.

Hinji looked at all the stores through the protective cloth over his eyes. "Tsu-sensei, do we have time to browse or make purchases before we embark on our mission? Or do we need to start immediately?" He asked as he spied a scroll store that looked like it may have some interesting scroll tomes.

Ishiaki looked at the genin and sighed yet again. This mission was really weighing heavily on his chest. "If there is anything that the six of you need to purchase, I suggest you do so now. We have time before the caravan leaves." He answered for Tsu and hoped they would take this time and wisely improve their weaponry and healing kits. When the mission was over, they could certainly return here and do some more personal shopping if they felt like it. Having said his bit, he turned to Tsu. "We've got to go and meet with Vannor. Did you have anything to say before we head our separate ways?"

Kami's first reaction upon disembarking the Tardis was to turn around and go back inside. She had never seen a village like this before and frankly found it intimidating.

El too had never seen a village of this caliber, but he held his peace and tried not to ogle at anything.

Kano stepped down to Kami's side and leaned over to whisper to her, "Don't worry, I've got your back." He promised her and held out his hand to her.

"No doubt we could find a puppet and a guitar at a place like this." Akane said to no one in particular.

"Go, shop, but nothing inappropriate." Tsu said to the kids with a nod "We can do personal shopping later. Concentrate on the fight ahead of us right now." She turned to Ishiaki, then gave a little shrug "Lets go now I suppose."

Oita was still fiddling with his frayed bag. He watched the others, and nodded slightly to Akane. "Yes, you can." he said, not seemingly in awe of the buildings at all "But I know I will under perform with a puppet I haven't used before."

"It's just so..." Kami's words were gone as she tried to take in the sights of the village.

"Kami..." El said, hearing his sensei's order. "I hate to impose..." But he really needed to look for a guitar and she was the only one who could afford one from his village.

"Well it's better than nothing, right?" Akane asked Oita. "I'm sure you'll be able to handle it." She had a small amount of spending money from their previous mission and was curious what shop to check out first. She overheard Kami and El speaking and thought of how truly kind and generous Kami was with her money. She wouldn't have been able to save Rin had it not been for Kami's wealth. Perhaps she could repay Kami somehow when they returned to the Inc Village.

"Imagine using a weapon... a weapon so big and strong, that a single misstep could send you sprawling onto your ass. A weapon that won't hurt the enemy unless you know the special ways to twist and thrust it. Imagine you just got that weapon. That would be what a puppet we just buy would feel like for me." Oita said gently to Akane "Even the improvised chunks of rock from before would be better, because I put those together myself."

"Then do that and quit whining." Akane said, not the best at being encouraging. A puppet was a puppet. She didn't understan what he was going on about. "You're going to have to figure something out, Oita...and fairly soon."

"I've got puppets. They weren't all broken. But... they might not survive very long." Oita said gruffly "And the rocks require a lot of solid rubble to be around the place. Do you see wreckage here?"

"Hey- don't be giving me attitude just cause you aren't very versatile." Akane said back, not appreciating how bitchy Oita had been all damn day.

"Shut up Akane. Do you really want to be remembering that you said this later?" Oita snapped at her, moving away from her. He thought he was going to die. He had barely any puppets, couldn't buy any, couldn't build any, his chances were slim, and he'd appreciate it if Akane just shut up for once.

Hinji didn't dilly-dally once given permission, and quickly vanished into the scroll store. He knew he could make no use of a tome yet, but looked through them none-the-less. He hoped they would have something he could pick up after their mission.

"Oh no it's ok." Kami told El with a smile. "What am I gonna spend it on any way?" She looked to Kano and said, "You wanna come with us or-" to El "should we ask Akane?"

El wasn't sure. While he would love to be in Akane's company, he worried about making a fool of himself in front of her with an unfamiliar guitar. He simply shrugged, but looked in Akane's direction. If she was meant to come she would catch him looking at her and respond.

Akane was a bit too distracted by Oita and how boldly rude he had been to have heard the others. As he just walked away from her, she wanted everything to shout and cuss at the back of his head. Instead, Akane held her tongue and bit her lip. "Hnng! Fuuu....graah." she grumbled with clenched fists. Fighting would do no good and she was trying to learn to be nicer and more understanding afterall. If Oita didn't shape up, he would be the new ass of the team.

Oita wandered off towards the woodwork area anyway. Just because there was very little chance he'd find anything didn't mean that he wasn't going to look for a puppet. He just... very much doubted he'd find anything he was comfortable with. It would be the luck of the draw. He didn't mean to make Akane angry... well he did, but he did it out of worry and annoyance.

"If you'll have me." Kano answered her with a smile. He had very little funds of his own, having spent the majority of them before they even got news of this mission.

Ishiaki looked at Tsu and nodded. "While they're shopping, we'll do our briefing with Vannor and see if the man can offer us any more enlightenment upon both our enemies and their target as well. I'd feel much more at ease if I knew what it was in the caravan we were to be protecting from them."

Tsu nodded and waved for Ishiaki to lead the way. She didn't feel like being the one to go first. It made her sick, this mission, and she wasn't sure how she would react if she was the first one to see the person employing them.

Kami saw Akane and thought perhaps she might be better left alone. "Come..." She said. "we should hurry."

El nodded, but couldn't help but wonder what had upset Akane.

She had resisted yelling and getting into a physical fight...so that was an improvement. Still, Akane exhaled roughly through her nostrils and turned at point to meet Kami, Kano and the rest, only to find them leaving already. That just irritated her more and she followed, though it's not like anyone would notice really. As she followed, she glanced to and fro at neighboring shops.

El lagged behind a little and nearly brushed shoulders with Akane. He wanted to take her hand and despite his recent feelings, did so. He tried to give her a bit of a smile, showing her she could relax with him.

Akane's eye shot to their hands, then to him with grave concern. She began to retract her arm a bit, "El-" she said in a loud whisper, "What are you doing? Stop it... what if someone sees." Despite their recent date last week, she was still very uncomfortable when it came to public signs of affection. "They'll think we're dating or something." Akane added, looking around for their sensei's.

El gestured a hand towards Kano and Kami who were holding hands. "Ishiaki and Tsu Sensei are occupied. The rest of our friends don't care enough to blow the whistle."

But did Akane care? She wasn't sure. Everything in her body screamed at her to pull away and get out of this situation. El was such a nice guy and Akane didn't want him getting tengled up in her mess. Kami could attest to that... it was never good for someone to get too close to the Tokushima family. Already El could feel her palm grow warm as nervousness built up. Her arm was stiff, not wanting anyone to pay attention to the fact they were holding hands now. "So... um... you think....we will find a guitar for you in this place? Does it have to be from your village?" Akane asked, wanting the attention to be off of their hands.

"My village is the only one who make Chakra grade guitars." El told her. "It will be expensive... but even a training guitar can be a deadly weapon."

"Oh, I see." Akane said with a nod. "So...I was thinking...maybe we should do something for Kami. She has been so generous to both you and me lately. Without her generosity, I never would have been able to pay the captain to drive me to my village and save Rin. What do you think about having some sort of 'thank you' party or something in Kami's honor?" After several more steps, her fingers eased to a close until they touched his knuckles, finally accepting his hand.

"Considering we survive this?" El asked.

"What is it with you guys? Of course we will survive." It may be naive, but someone had to be confident, damnit. Akane was a bit worried, yes, but she hoped to bounce confidence onto El then back to herself. "Just be sure to whistle for me and I'll come running to heal you. No sweat."

"So, is there anything that you've got to pick up for yourself, Kami?" Kano asked her as they walked, trying to find something to break the silence.

"I will." El said. "But I think it's time we caught up with them." He said, nodding to Kami and Kano.

"Nothing that I can think of at the moment." Kami said. "But we need to ask a merchant where to find a guitar for El."

"Tsu-sensei said that we should all have a lot more medical supplies than usual. She's really concerned for all our safeties." Kano explained with a sigh. "I must say, my own are sadly lacking. To be honest, I never have put much thought into the kit anyway. For my people, to be injured is an insult to our honor, but at the same time to gain a scar from a worthy battle...you can well imagine the problem." He smirked and shrugged.

"Yes..." Kami said. "I can help you with that. And if she is as worried as you say I should double up also."

Akane picked up her pace a bit to catch up with Kami and Kano. Her hand stayed with El's surprisingly, tugging him along with her. Though as they grew nearer, Akane's grip faltered, a bit too shy to let Kami and Kano see them holding hands like this. She was reluctant to date anyone right now and them spotting this little hand holding may raise some eyebrows.

"I don't want to be a bother." Kano told her, looking sheepish. He wasn't proud of the need to borrow money from her.

"Oh it's ok." Kami said. "But first, El's guitar."

El sensed Akane's hand slip and let her go, glad he had been able to hold her hand for as long as he had.

When it was El who released her hand, Akane looked at him and gave an appreciative smile and nod. She looked forward again now that they were one whole group once more. It was a shame Oita and Hinji were such loners. "Hey look... I think that is a directory." she pointed ahead. Sure enough, there was a little stand with a tall, skinny lad in a bowl-like hat. He had small rimmed glasses that sat low on his nose. On the top of the stand's awning read in a banner, "Guide to the Village of Merchants". Hanging on a rail was a selection of maps and booklets.

"Guide to the Village of Merchants...Pretty convenient." Kano said and stepped up to the counter. He pressed his hands down and smiled at the skinny lad. "Hello. We need to buy a guitar, preferably one that can be wielded by a sound ninja."

The man looked up from his news paper with little enthusiasm. He pointed to a sign that read, 'Verbal response = 1 RYO'

Kami frowned and pulled a rio from her purse. She placed it on the counter.

He took the coin, looked at it, and set it down behind his counter. "Sound village instruments are can be found at the "Brass Bell Music Store."

"Where is that?" Akane asked, pleased to hear they at least had a lead.

The man only held out his hand for another ryo.

Kami handed him another.

"Right behind you." he replied. Sure enough, there was a building that had large, engraved letters that read ' Brass Bell Music Store'.

"You've got to be joking!" Akane said loudly, "That is outrageous! Where do you get off, buddy?! Give us that ryo back!"

He only pointed to another sign that read 'No refunds' and put up his newspaper again.

"Forget it." Kami said, grabbing Akane by the arm. "Thank you." She said and began to push Akane away. "Come on boys."

"What in the heck kind of place is this?!" Akane asked, hopefully loud enough for that idiot to hear.

Oita carefully wandered through the streets, the huge pack seemingly slowing him down as he continued to drag his legs on his way around the village. He had no desire for whimsy.

Kano couldn't help but laugh and looked at El, hoping his friend was enjoying it as much as he was. "This place is great!"

"Say that when it's you're money." Kami said, bumping him with her hip.

As the four walked across the street and into the music store, they were welcomed with a vast array of instruments covering the shop from floor to ceiling. Guitars from around the world of every color of every shape were lined along both walls. In the center were drums and percussion instruments while in the rear were wind instruments and string. Although the entrance had looked small, the inside was vast and well lit, letting their eyes be bombarded with metallic paints and shine.

El walked in, very quietly, letting his friends move ahead of him. He didn't speak as he browsed, but his eyes could be seen darting back and forth. There was disappointment in his face. He could see no guitars made from chakra quality wood.

Kano whistled when they walked into the store. He was used to shopping in much less glamor to the store itself. "Are all the shops like this?" He asked Kami as he looked around, the floors were carpeted....Carpeted!

Akane was a bit awe-struck at how packed with this place was with instruments. After a few steps into the store, she turned to look at El, expecting him to be pleased. When she noticed the opposite upon his face, she walked over and asked, "Are you okay? What's wrong?"

"I don't know..." Kami said "This is the first shop I've been in." She looked down, wiggling her toes. "What is this on the floor?"

El sighed. "There are no weapons." He said gravely.

"It's called carpet." Kano told her quietly, not wanting the others to hear. He knew how Akane could be when Kami experienced something new. "It's like fake fur."

"Really? None of these?" Akane asked, looking up at the wonders of guitars. "How do you know? What do weapon guitars have that these dont?"

"I can tell by the way they sound from the vibration of our voices." El told her. "And weapon guitars are made from chakra conductive wood and metals... it's what makes them so expensive."

"I see... well... hmm..." she hummed and looked around. Akane noticed the checkout table and a clerk standing there. Next, she took El's hand and led him toward the counter. "Come on." she said, not taking 'no' for an answer. "Hey-" Akane barked at the clerk, "Do you guys have any weapon guitars?"
"Excuse me?" the man asked, "What?" It was clearly a question that he was never asked on a daily basis.

"Chakra conductive guitars." El clarified.

The clerk looked the two of them up and down for a moment, "I don't think you two realize at what cost something like that is."

"Trust me sir." El said. "I understand very well."

Kami lifted her head when she heard the mention of cost. "I think they're singing my song." She said silently to Kano, still feeling the carpet with her toes.

"We have the funds." Akane spat, letting go of El's hand to put it on her hip angrily. "Do you have what my friend here needs or are you just wasting our time?"

The clerk seemed displeased with how Akane was talking to him. "We don't have anything a little pipsqueak like that can play."
"What's going on Toshi?" asked a deep voice from the back. Out from the curtain stepped a very large man with a full black beard. "Did I hear something about a chakra conductive guitar?"

"Akane..." El said softly. He looked at her with pleading in his eyes. He wanted to tell her to let him handle this, but he left it alone. He gently squeezed her hand, but let it go afterward. He turned to the man with the beard and said, "Yes sir... even a training guitar would be desirable..."

"They said they can afford it." the clerk said to the presumed manager. In turn, the burly man stroked his beard and hummed. Stepping aside, he held the curtain open, "This way." he gestured.

El's body language seemed to become suddenly excited and he vanished from Akane's side the second the curtain was pulled back.

Akane went to follow, but was blocked by the clerk.
"Just him." he said.
"Ugh!" she grunted dramatically, not too fond of this Toshi guy. She looked over and headed to Kano and Kami. "Well at least this place has something it seems... I just hope El finds what he is looking for."

Inside the back room

"Should I go back there?" Kami asked. "Since I have the money..."

"You are going to have to get through toe-head over there. You could probably just wait and see if El finds anything he likes." Akane said.

"You know, calling him names when he's in earshot sure won't help us out any, if El does find a worthy guitar." Kano told her with a bit of a grimace. The toe-head comment was funny to him, though...

"Let's just... look around." Kami said. "Try not to mess this up for El..."

"Don't blame me for toe-head's ignorance." Akane said with a hand still on her hip. "So... do you two need to pick anything up in this market?"

"Med kit." Kano said simply, adding a shrug to it. "Tsu-sensei says we'll need it, and I don't have much of one myself. You?"

The sound of El's playing came from inside the back room.

Akane turned her head toward the curtain and she couldn't help but smile. She was brought back to reality when Kano's question hung in the air, "Me? I'm not sure really. I have all my medical supplies... and gear. To be honest, I feel very prepared right now. I was thinking about browsing for a while though and seeing if anything catches my eye."

"I'm going to double up." Kami said. "But it sounds as if El is getting rather expensive."

Finally El emerged from the back with a candy apple red electric guitar in his hand and the store owner behind him. El looked perplexed, and a little weary.

"You're not kidding." Akane muttered toward Kami before walking over to El. She didn't know much about guitars, but that one sure looked pricy. "That's beautiful." she noted.

Kami, her hand in Kano's came toward the counter. "Wow El..." She said. "How... much is it?"

"It was a gift." El said, still not quite understanding what happened in the back room. "But I require an amplifier. I've not yet learned how to do it with my voice."

"That is a gift?" Akane asked a bit shocked, curious what the hell El did to the store owner in the backroom. "That's crazy...are you serious?"

"Clearance amps are at that back wall." the store owner pointed before heading back around the counter to count some money.

"Dude...you got something free in this village?" Kano asked with a smirk

"Well it is useless without the amplifier." El said, moving to the back of the shop where the keep had indicated. "So in a way, no."

"Well considering how expensive some of these regular guitars are, I would say you should be a bit happier with a free one." Akane said.

"I'm certainly happy with it." Kami said. "Let's get you an ampli-thingy."

"I am certain there are some moderately priced ones. You don't need anything special when it comes to them, right?" Kano asked El curiously. He understood that the guitar had to be specially made, but did the amp have to as well?

"It needs to be able to handle my chakra output." El said. "But even the best of them are not nearly as expensive as one of these fine normal guitars."

"Oh and please don't test the amp in the store with that guitar, sir." called the shop owner. He didn't need anything broken or wrecked.

"Oh... yes sir." El said. "I won't." He turned to Akane. "Do you mind?" He asked, holding it out for her.

Akane held out her hands and took the guitar. It was actually a bit heavier than she thought it was going to be, but she was very careful with it, as if it were an infant. Looking closer, she could see the red paint had flecks of glitter in it and thought it was quite beautiful. It was a shock he received this for free. She would have to ask him about that later.

"It's so pretty..." Kami said, bending down to look at it better. "It would be prettier in blue..." Then again kami thought everything was prettier blue.

"Blue isn't really one of El's colors... I like the red." Akane said, looking down at it with Kami.

"I'm not sure which..." El said, standing next to Kano as they looked at the clearance section of traveling amplifiers.

"You'll need one with it's own power source, right? It's not like you'd be able to plug it in in the field." Kano said rather absentmindedly as he looked at the amps. He didn't understand how the devices worked, but if it had to be plugged it, it would be useless for El.

"This." El said, choosing one and turning it over. With his finger he flipped up a lever and cranked a small wheel. "It creates an electrical current within the amp. It maintains it's own energy."

"That's cool." Kano said, looking over his friend's shoulder as he cranked the device. "How much of a charge will it hold?"

"It depends on how much I use it." He said, placing t down and moving down the line to the more inexpensive amps.

Kami shrugged. "Either way, it's fantastic." She reached forward and plucked one of the little strings, hearing a soft uninteresting twaaaaaaang sound.

"As long as it is portable, it will not matter much. Right?" Kano asked him as they looked at the other amps. He still didn't understand how these small boxes made the guitar better.

Akane wrapped the strap around her shoulder and held the guitar like someone who knows what they are doing would. "Check this out... let me see here." She leaned into the neck of and put her fingers on the right places. She strummed, adjusted her fingers and strummed again. She played six or seven chords that El had taught her on the seatrip on their last mission.

Kami smiled brightly. "Did he teach you that?'

"Yeah... on the boat trip to the Frost Village." Akane said, modestly proud. "I've never played any sort of instrument growing up...and you can't really count bird calls. Feels kinda cool though, you know?"

Kami nodded, smiling. "You guys have been spending a lot of time together..."

Akane twitched and looked at Kami with a serious expression. She pointed at her and said, "Stop! Whatever you think your thinking... stop. Stop it right now. No."

Kami smiled and it was a wide bright smiled that brought a rosiness to her cheeks. What was it she had sang about her and Kano? Or right... Very quietly she whispered. "Akane and El sitting in a tree..."

To make this matter worse, Akane and El HAD sat in a tree. A few times while she was teaching him to be unafraid of heights and another when she was recovering from the flu and he held her in his arms. Her face flourished with red heat. "Knock it off!" she said in a loud whisper to Kami, "You're out of your damn mind, lady! It's not like that and you know it!" Her palms were sweating and suddenly she felt really weird holding onto El's guitar.

"Quality does matter..." El said. "But these all look like fine brands." He picked up a black one with a silver screen. He hooked it on his belt under his poncho and chose an electric display model, he then plugged the guitar into the amp and gave a small smile at Kano.

"Oh I'm only teasing." Kami told her. "Like you teased me. I don't mean anything by it. It's cute." Everyone else, well of their little group seemed to know that she and El were together. Akane was the only one who hadn't gotten the message.

Kano smirked and looked at his friend. "That's a cute little amp. Will it work though?"

Akane felt weird hanging onto El's guitar now. It might as well be a ring around her finger for all she knew. "Uh huh..." she trailed off, not convinced by Kami's explanation. Wanting to drop it, she started a different conversation, "So- do you think they will split us up like in the Frost Village?"

"Please don't refer to it as cute Kano." El said. "If only for my own preference." He began to play and the result was a very rich and loud sound, even on such a low setting.

"Probably." Kami said, turning to hear El play. "But we will probably remain with our senseis."

"I'm sure that Akane will feel the same way when she sees it, El." Kano told him with a smirk. "It's a shame that it is not bigger and manlier."

"Really?" Akane asked, "After Ishiaki's all, 'I must fight him, it is our destiny~" She looked at Kami with a raised brow, "I have no idea what to expect after that whole shtick."

"Then we might be with Tsu Sensei." Kami said. "I don't know."

El smirked. "I have plenty that's large an manly about me."

"Oh mighty Vulture, I hope not. That woman drives me nuts. Honestly." Akane said with a groan.

Kano clapped his friend on the shoulder and smirked. "If you say so, El."

"Things will work out." Kami told her.

"You don't think it's too expensive do you?" El asked Kano. "I hate to impose on Kami."

"If it is the one you need, no price is too high. Besides, you are going to pay her back, aren't you?" Kano responded, he hadn't seen the price tag and therefore had no way of answering his friend

"I hope Oita finds what he is looking for... he freaked out on me earlier." Akane said, "If he cracks under pressure like that, this is NOT a good field for him to go into."

"As soon as I can." El promised, heading back towards the girls.

"He... freaked out?" Kami asked, seeing the boys approaching.

"Who freaked out?" Kano asked when they joined the girls.

"Oita. I was talking to him earlier and he told me to shut up and asked if I really want to remember that conversation later." Akane explained.

"What was it about?" Kami asked.

"He was freaking out about his puppet situation. I told him to stop whining about it and figure something out. Then he got all pissed and stormed off." Akane explained.

"I told him I would gladly help him buy a puppet if he found one he could use." Kami said.

"Well I am done here." El said. "Perhaps when we are finished we should seek him out?"

Kami nodded. "Is that the thing?" She asked, obviously it was. "Come on. I'll pay for it and we can get going."

"It's cute, isn't it?" Kano asked the girls with a smirk on his face.

"I wouldn't really call it cute..." Akane said, tilting her head as she looked at the little back box. "Especially since it can probably knock you flat on your ass, Kano."

El smiled. "Thank you Akane." He said and followed Kami to the front to check out.

"I'm sorry Akane, but I will believe that when I see it." Kano said stubbornly. He knew full well how powerful El's musical jutsu could be, but he still held his doubts.

"I can't wait to see it." Akane said with a tease.

Kami laughed at that as she counted out the the money to the man behind the counter.

"Thank you for this Kami." El said quietly. "I'll pay you back. I swear."

Akane still held El's guitar and glanced down at it again while Kami paid. She would have to think of something nice for Kami with El later.

The clerk rang up El's amp and said, "96 ryo after the discount."

Kano couldn't help but wince when he heard the total. And it was after the discount?

Kami counted out the money without minding. "There we are." She said, handing him his little box of sound. "Now, we should find Oita and see if he has found a puppet he can use."

El thanked Kami again and took his guitar from Akane.

"Hey- where can we find a puppet shop?" Akane asked the clerk.
He rolled his eyes and sighed but eventually replied with "Two blocks over."

"El, maybe we should go and find Hinji while they find Oita." Kano offered

"That's a good idea." El said, clipping the amp on his belt under his poncho.

"Any idea where that little ball of sunshine went?" Akane asked, referring to their other teammate..

"Knowing Hinji, he must have sought out a scrolls shop." Kano told her simply enough.

El nodded. "Yes..." He said. "That's exactly where he would be."

"And Oita will be in the puppet shop." Kami said.

Akane and Kami split off from Kano and El to seek out Oita. They walked across two blocks and found the puppet shop that he was no doubt in. On the way, Akane had stopped at a small
stand and bought a giant stick of cotton candy. "Hey Kami... would you have some extra chakra ball pellet things I could have? If not, I could probably buy them somewhere..."

"I have some." Kami told her. "Why do you ask?"

"They worked well last time...I was just hoping I could borrow some? Just in case, you know." Akane said, "But like I said, if you can't spare any, I could see if there are any to buy around here."

"I have plenty." Kami told her. "I'll put together an assortment for you. I know you like the fruity ones."

"Thanks a lot. You should really show me how to make those things sometime." Akane said, offering some cotton candy to her friend.

"I'd be happy to you." Kami said, taking a bite of the cotton candy. "OH!" She exclaimed with surprise. "It vanished!"

"It's aerated sugar basically. The air goes away when your spit hits it." Akane explained, pinching another piece off to eat. They are usually only at carnivals and things like that... so I couldn't resist buying a stick. Not the most healthy... but hey, if I die today at least I die after having had some cotton candy, right?"

Kami smiled and pinched off another bite. "I like that reasoning." She said as they came up to the Cogs Marionette Puppet Shop.
