White Ladies

Blind folk see the fairies.
Oh, better far than we,
Who miss the shining of their wings
Because our eyes are filled with things
We do not wish to see.



White Ladies are a type of Elf, and they generally take care of the mortals in the area. They are increasingly rare, and seldom are the mortals in an area considered worthy of having a White Lady assigned to them. They are naturally invisible, and can only be seen when they kiss a child, by someone born on a Sunday, by someone with supernatural vision or by someone wearing an elf talisman. When they are visible they appear as beautiful, tall women in flowing white dresses, and they have long blonde hair that always flutters in the wind. Even when there isn't any wind.

When taking care of mortals they guide lost travelers back to their path, help in childbirth, increase the yeld of milking cows, show miners where precious metal can be found and in genereal do good deeds to the local inhabitants. They can also calm storms, which makes them very important to sailors and seaside communities.

If someone is cruel or ungrateful, however, they become very angry and punish with a vengeance. They punish men and women differently, mostly because men often act more violently than the women. The men who displeases them are often killed, found by others at the bottom of a cliff or by the roadside. In some cases they are merely struck with insanity or illness. Women are more often slapped sharply across the face, leaving a mark which lasts their entire life, and which carries down to their children and grandchildren.
