Raw Materials
Basic vs Advanced
Winter of Wolves is a Rule-based RP, but that doesn't mean we want players to have to crunch numbers and learn the whole system to play. Pretty much all of the game can be played with basic rules, for which you only need to know the information written out here. Sometimes, there will be advanced rules which can be handled back stage by the GM, whenever you see text Written like this, these are advanced rules and you can feel free to ignore them if you don't want to get into the mechanics of the RP.
Almost any weapon, piece or armor or item in Winter of Wolves can be created from simpler materials by skilled characters. The most basic materials are raw materials, which must be obtained and cannot be created by the character by players. Raw materials are usually cheap and plentiful, but they must be refined into things of value before they can be used.
To avoid complications, raw materials will be quantified in units, and the cost (in Guerrmarks) and weight described below corresponds to one unit of the material.
Metal Ore
Metal Ore represents a variety of metallic ores mined from the sprawling tunnels beneath the Royal City. Any non-precious metals can be grouped within Metal Ores.
Cost: 1 Guerrmarks
Weight: 3
Silver Ore
As a precious metal, Silver can be used for jewelry and is considered better than simple metal ores for specific things, specially the creation of magical focuses.
Cost: 3 Guerrmarks
Weight: 2
Gold Ore
Even after the end of the world, gold continued to be a valuable commodity, and it is the main metal composing the Royal Guerrmark. It is also considered to have powerful alchemical and magica properties by both Daguerrians and Majai, which lends to it's value.
Cost 4 Guerrmarks
Weight: 2
Gemstones
Gemstones are an extemely important commodity in the world, not only because of their beauty and rarity, but because no magical focus can seemingly channel as much magical power.
Cost: 75 Guerrmarks
Weight: 1
Wood
Normally wood would be extremely cheap compared to metal ores, however, after the onset of the winter most forests quickly died. And even though some forests survived, rangers must traverse the frozen wastes to get to them. This all means lumber is not a luxury commodity, but much more expensive than it was 100 years ago.
Cost: 1 Guerrmark
Weight: 3
Fur
The few animals who managed to survive the onset of the winter were those which were already adapted for the winter. In fact, beasts that lived north of the austral sea of DaGuerre now roam what used to be green fields and scorching deserts, providing thick furs to the few rangers brave enough to face the eternal blizzards.
Cost: 2 Guerrmarks
Weight: 3
Wool
After the onset of the winter, all grazing lands were frozen over and died. Very few animals were taken to the underground cities, for every inch of usable land within is extremely valuable. From these, sheep were hardly a priority, where now a pound of wool is worth almost as much as a pound of silver.
Cost: 2 Guerrmarks
Weight: 2
Silk
Whereas fibers like cotton and most wool bearing animals in the world were lost, the Majai that came to the underground cities found that an ancient practice of theirs thrived in the damp, dark, warm spaces to which they were relegated. Nowadays, farming silk is one of the few businesses which are controlled by non-daguerrian
s.
Cost: 3 Guerrmarks
Weight: 1
Flint
Flint is necessary for DaGuerrian engineering, and luckily plentiful in the mines. The mineral rock is used for many constructs relating to electric and fire.
Cost: 1 Guerrmark
Weight: 3
Bone/Horn
Bone or Horn as materials have only ever been appreciated by DaGuerrians when heavily and masterfully decorated and carved. However, Majai recognize that these materials do not only some interesting properties but a history, which makes them ideal for magical focusing.
Cost: 1 Guerrmark
Weight: 2
Hide
Hides are the assorted skins of animals both raised within the Royal City or brought by hunters from the white wastes. When tanned, this material yields good quality leather.
Cost: 1 Guerrmark
Weight: 3
Twine
Most that can be protected around the cities is too cold and harsh now for much to grow except the hardy plant known as Wintergrass. This hard to kill, easy to grow plant has next to zero nutritional value, but serves as a building material for greater things.
Cost: 1 Guerrmark
Weight: 1
Rubber
Obtaining Rubber is a grueling process which includes digging tunnels close to the frozen surface in search for a strange breed of roots. When cut, the roots dispense a milky white substance which can be used to make both rubber and other adhesives.
Cost: 2 Guerrmarks
Weight: 1
Feather
Few birds fly over the world anymore, and the only ones humans can access are those raised as poultry within the cities. Whereas meat is worth it's weight in gold, the feathers of these birds are worth theirs in silver.
Cost: 2 Guerrmarks
Weight: 1
Glass
Glass is an extremely useful and commonplace material, made from the sandy clay deposits many times found while digging to expand the city. When refined and worked correctly, it can even be used in military grade scopes.
Cost: 2 Guerrmarks
