Sometimes referred to as 'grotesques', gargoyles are stone objects often made to look like creatures both terrifying and wonderful, and have been used as the basis of fantasy genre monsters for decades. Their primary function is to let excess water runoff be directed away from the buildings they occupy. They also serve as stone guardians, decoration, and in the fantasy genre, they also have a tendency of beings magnificent creatures that protect and defend their home territory. Some tales have said that gargoyles only transform during certain specific times and scenarios, such as at night, or under a full moon.
