Lovesick

Get out of here you pest,
you wee invader,
you pathogen!
What do you think you're doing anyway?
Diseasing me, poisoning my immunity?
Making me susceptible to your charms?
Well the joke's on you.
I am nothing but a trickster
who spins webs to keep from
being truly exposed,
hiding right in front of you...

But oh, you've pulled open a trap door,
thanks a lot!
How do you like me now that you've seen?
How can I trust you now
that you've slimed your way
beyond the gate?
Beyond the most basic of obstacles
routinely placed to keep
filth like you out?
Out, out, out damned spot!
There is no home for you here,
no room to share,
no light to shed.
I cannot be what you want,
especially not now that I've
grown accustomed to your
unnatural occupation of my soul.

I fear my sickness is worsening
for now I crave your touch
when I feel your presence lessening.
Have you become more potent?
Feasting off the pitiful resistance
that my creaky armor
now offers you.
Hope, health, all is compromised
and I realize now
that I am completely
infected.

Ode to Bob

I saw a photo today
It reminded me of you
It had phthalos and alizarins
And every kind of hue

And as I stared at the image
It was really easy to see
That painting is not so hard
As some would think it to be

You ex-stroked a sky
Knifed on a mountain
Dabbed on a happy little cloud
Shoot, let’s make more! Who’s countin’?

The trees are full of sun
With just a flick of the brush
Time to make some big decisions
Just give it the least little touch

A broad stroke of sepia
Practically down the middle
Became a lovely tree
Well, your confidence scared me...a little

A half-hour is gone
We sure had some fun
And with a little red
I think we’ll call this done

We miss you Mr. Ross
We didn’t want it to end
But away you went
God bless you my friend

Morning Coffee

It's cold out today,
The fog-thinned light too weak
To wake me from our shared slumber.
The smell of coffee is just beginning to
Thread its way through my dreams,
But not even the best cup in California
Could drag me free of this bed
If it meant leaving behind
The warmth of your embrace.

Mel

See there’s this little doll and she dances
Round and round to make him smile
The music pounding in her brain
Forcing the turn of her toes
Where’s the sense in dancing
If that’s the only you he knows

Oh frail porcelain doll
Haven’t you played this game before
Don’t you know that dancing
Only makes your heart sore

He will bend his fingers round you
Turn the pin that’s in your spine
It makes you dance and spin for him
Claiming he loved you more
As he keeps time

You refuse to see your beauty
Outside the reflection of his eyes
But so many men would dance with you
And hold your hands more gently
And love you far more dearly

See there’s this little doll and she dances
Round and round she goes
But dancing is not loving
And that’s one thing he’ll never know
