Om Mani Padme Hum

"It is very good to recite the mantra Om mani padme hum, but while you are doing it, you should be thinking on its meaning, for the meaning of the six syllables is great and vast... The first, Om [...] symbolize the practitioner's impure body, speech, and mind; they also symbolize the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha[...]"

"The path is indicated by the next four syllables. Mani, meaning jewel, symbolizes the factors of method-the altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love.[...]"

"The two syllables, padme, meaning lotus, symbolize wisdom[...]"

"Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable hum, which indicates indivisibility[...]"

I am not a vegetarian. Plants are just as alive to me as animals, so we would have to abstain from eating altogether to not kill to eat. I do not live to eat, but it is worth my time to enjoy the nice meal prepared for me. It is only respectful. ;)

2007-05-18 [xido]: I totally understand Om. I do not understand the rest. I have heard many mantras be used. What about the following five syllables is meaningful, and why?

2007-05-21 [xido]: Well, I know where Om comes from. It is like returning to the center. Hindus say it was the first sound in creation. I just do not understand where the rest of them are coming from... I read them again. I think it helped a little. I just wish I knew why each of them were more important than all the other possible sounds mankind can create.

2007-05-23 [ArchangelGabriel]: Well, it literally translates to "oh hail the jewel of the lotus amen" They can be found inscribed on almost every Buddhist artifact.
