Lover's Dirge

Speak to me, your softest sigh
with words no mortal may deny
but care be left among the tone
and touch my heart, but not my eye.

Whisper as the winds caress
with sound of winter's tenderness
tread softly o'er my fragile mind
my shattered soul with which to bless

I have not the strength for such a gift
Without a breeze my heart uplift
Your tone has found a different note
my ears are now alone, bereft

I watched you make the world your own
and listened to your softest tone
I touched the very heart of it
and tasted bitterness alone

I sank beneath the darkest depths
and without care, my eyes had wept
but not without a sense of want
that melody my heart had kept

I lay in bitter night's repose
you touched the very core of woes
but your song became a lover's dirge
you sang not to me, as my eyes did close.
