Every roleplaying character played in tabletop RPG has an alignment. Alignment deals with a character or creature's personality, and their disposition towards, chaos, law, good, evil, or neutrality among two axes:
Law v. Chaos and Good v. Evil.

Your choices:
Chaotic Good, Chaotic Neutral, Chaotic Evil,
Neutral Good, True Neutral, Neutral Evil,
Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Lwful Evil.

Law/Chaos pertains to the char's view of customs, laws, responsibilities, organization, etc. Lawful chars uphold certain moral standards, while chaotic chars are individualistic and sometimes drawn to illegal activities that they may feel are unharmful of many people. Chars that are neutral in this aspect have no opinion on such matters, and merely worry about if their actions are for the good or evil aspect.

Good/Evil has to do with a char's view of life, liberty, and the common goal of all people, whether in their party or not. This is relatively self-explanatory, and has nothing to do with laws or politics. Neutral chars have a tendency of being hypocritical or uncaring in this aspect, acting against others based on their thoughts at that particular instant.

Neutrality can be present on the part of either of these factors, and even both. A true neutral char goes with the flow in any instance, siding with a party that holds to their ways, and killing or destroying if it benefits the party's growth and well-being. Some chars, known as unaligned, are only concerned with the ultimate sense of balance. Good and Evil, as well as Law and Chaos, are only two sides of complimentary polarities, and these chars are only concerned with the balance of life in the way they see it.

Guidelines:
These are simple guides that describe the different alignments. They are quite rough, and do not cover any specifics, but if you pick the one that seems to fit your character best it's probably the right one. The use of the masculine forms "he", "him" and "his" is just to simplify things, obviously the same things go for female characters.

Chaotic Good - A chaotic good character wants to do good in the world, but find that many laws and tradition do little but opress people. He believe in goodness, but not at the cost of freedom. Robin Hood is a typical Chaotic Good character, he stole money from the prince (a chaotic action) and gave it to the poor (a good action).

Chaotic Neutral - A chaotic neutral character believes in freedom above all else, he does whatever he wants without care for wether it's good, evil or lawful.

Chaotic Evil - A chaotic evil character does whatever he want, not caring who he may harm or what laws he may break. Indeed, some chaotic evil characters do these things only for the sake of doing evil.

Neutral Good - A neutral good character help those in need, no matter what. If he see someone in trouble he help them out, no matter if it is a robbed merchant or a wounded robber.

Neutral (or True Neutral) -

Neutral Evil -

Lawful Good -

Lawful Neutral - A lawful netural character lives by the book. If the laws say that he should act in one way, he act in that way without letting good and evil come in the way.

Lawful Evil - A lawful evil characters use the laws to defend himself and further his own goals. He is the kind of bad guy that can do his deeds with the knowledge that the law is on his side.

These personality distinctions are based on 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons standard alignments, and work perfectly well in all instances. This page has no password.
Any further suggestions to help explain this facet of a char's personality would be rather helpful.
Thanks.

2004-03-20 [Taylor Quickfingers]: As a rule one must understand the extreams of Alignments. Lawful good is sometimes considered the most pure as the follow every law that is either holy or man made and they are very good in their dealings. Chaotic Evil os offten considered the most evil as they can be found randomly doing evil for no good reason. Chaotic Neutral is considered Insane in the fact that they have no judgement and just randomly do what they like. Chaotic good is a step lower then LG as they will do what is good for the people and try to find the best path of least resistance no matter what. Lawful Evil plans and hires the CE characters to do elaborate schemes.

2005-07-13 [Blood Raven]: CG might just be focused on spreading freedom too. It's more a matter of ideal shift. LG finds laws bring order, peace and happiness. NG just does whatever is the best to do. CG wishes everybody to be free so everybody can develop themselves, etc. LN thinks laws should be followed to the letter. TN doesn't really give a damn one way or another, and CN likesb eing free, but has no tendency to win the same freedom for others.

2005-07-13 [Blood Raven]: LE plots their way to do as much evil to others as possible, using rules to their advantage and others disadvantage. NE wishes the worst of luck to everybody, and CE just does what they feel like without any regard to others, in fact they usually enjoy wrecking misfortune on others

2005-07-14 [xido]: This page is not passworded, and all of that can be posted up there if you wish to put it right after my little notation at the end. ;)

2006-02-11 [xido]: Needs a little bit of specification in my opinion... maybe some day. ;)

2006-02-14 [Kim_Lundin]: Well, it's difficult to specify them all, the best thing, IMHO, would be to give a super-basic explanation of them all and then let people chose the one most fitting. If you specify them too much, it's impossible to find one that fits the personality of a character. I like Blood's way to describe it.

2006-12-05 [xido]: Well, a basic re-wording of the facts in the Players Handbook would be pretty basic, and helpful. Any input is appreciated, so feel free to post as you wish.

2007-11-01 [Kim_Lundin]: I've started to write some descriptions. If anyone has any ideas/pointers, please speak up. If someone can come up with a famous character that fits into a certain alignment, it would be nice to hear. I used Robin Hood as an example for chaotic good, but need help finding others.

2007-11-03 [xido]: Great!
Also, there is some Open Gaming License content on Alignments that can be posted here (this is from http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/glossary&term=Glossary_dnd_alignment&alpha=):

One of the nine descriptors of morality for intelligent creatures: lawful good (LG), neutral good (NG), chaotic good (CG), lawful neutral (LN), neutral (N), chaotic neutral (CN), lawful evil (LE), neutral evil (NE), and chaotic evil (CE).

In a monster entry, the alignment line gives the alignment that the creature is most likely to have. Every entry includes a qualifier that indicates how broadly that alignment applies to all monsters of that kind.

Always: The creature is born with the indicated alignment. The creature may have a hereditary predisposition to the alignment or come from a plane that predetermines it. It is possible for individuals to change alignment, but such individuals are either unique or rare exceptions.

Usually: The majority (more than 50%) of these creatures have the given alignment. This may be due to strong cultural influences, or it may be a legacy of the creatures' origin. For example, most elves inherited their chaotic good alignment from their creator, the deity Corellon Larethian.

Often: The creature tends toward the given alignment, either by nature or nurture, but not strongly. A plurality (40-50%) of individuals have the given alignment, but exceptions are common.

2010-12-28 JerryLR: The 1st factor which is noticed concerning the Spanish Language course will be the tediousness of the lessons. The vocabulary words are given in blocks of 4 for ease of memorization, but they're repeated continually throughout the rest of the plan. Sadly, the monotony of the plan can trigger a user to drift off throughout the course of the lesson and miss some crucial points.
