It took jack just three days to realise it. He’d been dreaming the same dream for the past three nights, and on the final night, in the small hours of the morning it had clicked. Had he not known what can of worms this had opened, he would have left well alone.

He had dreamt of her. For three nights, and for three days his entire thoughts had been consumed by her. Her very being, her very essence, had washed over him, crawled through his veins and invaded his soul. Had he known that ‘’her essence was that of a spider bite, he probably would not have been quite so enraptured.

And it had hit him. Slowly at first..like a slowly ascending thought, threatening to knock at the door, pricking his conscious wide- awake.

He had known her. From somewhere. He wasn’t sure when, maybe not even in this life-time, but he had known her. The feeling of déjà vu was so strong, he was almost sure that he knew her. Had known her. Deeply and purely. But something was not quite right. Ever since jack had been a child, he’d had ‘the touch’.. He could sense more than most. He’d finally, as he got older, been able to narrow it down to a simple explanation remained buried and forgotten like his childhood.

He still remembered that he would converse in his mind with certain people, he could not be sure who any more, but they always felt ‘familiar’. He would hear things through radio’s, televisions, even writing in magazines, as he got older, learnt how to read. The letters seemed to re-correlate and form new words. What Jack did not know, or rather, did not remember, was that the words he saw, and heard, were predictions. Premonitions.

He was also in the possession of a huge secret, that he himself had forgot, or subtly chosen to forget. Something which would change every single religion in the entire world, and cause world war three. It was maybe a good thing that Jack had ‘chosen’ to forget. Maybe he, even at a young age, had been aware of what might happen.

The girl, he knew, was not entirely pure, any more. Someone had got to her, and had changed her. A beautiful lotus blossom had she been, now, a beautiful rose, with thorns that pricked all who touched her. But, he sensed a great sadness in this girl, in his dreams.
He still retained Empathy, but this would only come about in his dreams. If he met a troubled person, he would later dream about them. Only he had not met this girl recently, but he must have done so in the past.

That night, after a glass (or three) of whisky, he had retired to bed, looking forward to his welcome visitor. Things had not been going great in his life. His wife had left him, his business had gone belly-up, and his thirtieth birthday was rocking up, lurking like some monster waiting to pounce and age him. Since his wife left him, due to his financial problems, he had had a string of girlfriends, everyone of them not a thing like his wife, who’s been blonde, brown-eyed, and oh-so-perfect.

To be honest, the relationship had been going down hill long before that, this was just Suzanna’s ticket out of it, her big excuse to divorce him and take half of nothing.

Well, she was welcome to it, he had thought bitterly, that night, thinking briefly of her. (The reason he’d reached for his loyal Jack Daniel’s, a welcome friend who allowed him to feel the way he wanted to, and quickly .) Reading the final divorce papers.

He’d made a paper aero plane and thrown it high into the air, watching in twirl and descend as it fell. It had been a bad throw.
He’d seen her only the other week, had known that she had a new lover (Had suspected she had known him long before their split)
but what had hurt him the most, was the obvious swell in her tummy. She was pregnant.
Hadn’t she always told him she didn’t want kids?

Lying bitch.

But, in a way, he was glad that there had been no children involved. Less people to get hurt, that way. And children’s minds were fragile, precious little things. He remembered his own parents split. How he had been torn between the two, constantly being bought their favours. He’d felt like some rag doll, a constant tug-o-war between both. At least his parents had wanted him though. He remembered his best friend, Lucy. Cute, freckled-faced, cherub-faced Lucy.

The girl with the beautiful, dark spirals that tumbled about her shoulders. He still remembered her laughter, her bright smile, teased at the corners, as they pushed one another on the swing. Sweet, cherub-faced Lucy. Her mother and father didn’t want her.

He wondered what became of Lucy. He hadn’t seen her in y ears. Last he’d heard of her, was when she’d moved to her grandmothers in the U’S..

She’d been so sad. Those dark blue eyes, the kind that went even deeper bluer with tears. She was going to miss me ‘’lots and lots’’..and we’d promised to write to each other every day forever and ever, until we were old enough to meet each other once again. She visited me once, when we were both fourteen. I remembered thinking how beautiful she was, with that same, dark spirals and dark, blue eyes, that told me everything I’d ever needed to know about her. I knew she’d led a sad life. We fell in love.

We spent all summer together, until she had to g o back to her home. We told one another that we would wait until we were seventeen years old, then move away together, leave everything behind them, and start all over again.
We carried on writing to each other for a while, and then one day, out of the blue, she stopped writing.,. She stopped sending me snapshots of herself and her friends, stop writing me those nonsensical poetries that I had grown to love. Whenever I called her home, back in the U,s no-one ever answered, and after a while, all I got was the disconnection tone.

I’d loved her, and now I couldn’t understand why she had stopped, just like that. I missed her. I still have that single memory of us both holding hands, six year olds, racing through the poppy fields by our house. We’d run until we exhausted ourselves, then lay under the warm, summer sun and dream of wonderful, melodious things.

Come to think of it now, the poppies that would have filled our lung with an opium scent, might have had something to do with our lovely, and lucid dreaming, but Lucy once told me, she’s dreamt of the two of us, older, full-grown, married and in love. Of course, I had laughed at the time, called her a name, and picked up a scary bug, and put it down the back of her dress.

Smiling at the sweet memory, I rolled over, and started to dream. Once again. she came, hazy at first, riding bare back upon a white horse. Her hair hung loose about her shoulders, tumbling in huge dark waves against the horses own mane. The girl lent forward, the dark a wonderful deep contrast to the white of the horse She swung her legs round, and quickly and gracefully jumped off the horse. The horse whinnied and nuzzled his mistress.. The horses eyes were a lovely brown. The horse was honest, and kind., and had been treat well.

The sky was dark, thunder clouds rolled above them., the sky over cast.

The girl patted the horse, kissing him on the forehead. She was wearing a long, floating white dress, and soft, white silken shoes. Half her hair was up in a Japanese pin, the rest, hung loose about her shoulders. In her hair, she wore pink orchid in a fringe braided into a plait, worn around her head, like a crown. She wore a white hood too, framing her face like a n exquisite piece of art. The girl’s face, was beautiful, and very youthful. There was something about this girl that was familiar. If a person could be a place, then she would have indeed been ‘home.’

As soon as he looked into the girl’s eyes, he saw her, knew who she really was. He had found her. His first love. Lucy. She was older now, he felt, but she barely looked the twenty-nine years that she was, barely younger than himself. His heart ached, and lurched, much in the same way as the stomach would rise on a fairground ride, or the very first time you see someone lovely. But this was not lust. It was something older, and much more fulfilling. It was the all, the unconditional, through sickness and in health. Just love..

Before, on the previous nights, he had dreamt of her from afar, as though he were spying on her through some spy glass from far, far away. This was the first time that he had seen her properly, and being able to recognise her.
Suddenly, he was looking down on himself, but he was different. He was smaller. His hands were tiny, and he was wearing, shorts and a tee-shirt. He was a boy again.

He ran his hands over his face, his chin smooth where only a few hours ago had been rough and unshaven. Had he been familiar with Freud, he might have realised that this was his past manifesting itself, and his inner child rising to the surface, momentarily.

The stormy weather gave way to the sun and a cloudless sky. He looked back at the girl again. She remained the same. A smile teased at the corners of her full mouth. The breeze tugged playfully at her hair, lifting the layers of her dress gently. She looked like Snow White. L

ooking down at himself once more, the familiar larger hands were back. He touched his face, briefly. So, too was the designer stubble.
She walked towards him, still the same suggestion of a smile, teasing her lips. They faced each other. Although Lucy was quite tall, Jack stood a little taller.

Standing inches apart now, they stared at one another. He took in her flawless ebony skin, the hair that feel across her eyes, framing those baby blues! Those eyes had haunted him for years. Thought he’d never see them again. Indelible upon his brain, he’d looked far into her soul through those eyes, farther than anyone else he had ever known. And they had fitted.
He put a hand up to her face.. Shaky, but strong. He felt like he was to touch a ghost. But he felt her, warm, and soft. She was real.

He ran a finger gently over her cheek, and she moved her head gently towards his hand, closing her eyes. He kissed her forehead. She wept a single tear. He kissed her again, this time her cheek. He tasted salt.

Opening her eyes, her beauty reflected within, outwards, even deeper blue than before. Resting his head on her shoulder, he breathed in her scent. She had always smelt good.. He could never describe what scent, try as he might.
‘’Where did you go?’’ He whispered, stifling a sob.

Taking his head in both hands, she gently raised his face back to her own. Her heart panged for him when she saw the tears brim in his face. She knew the pain that losing someone, with no closure, could bring. And she had caused this.
‘’My love, Jack’’. She replied.
She ran an elegant, long fingered hand down his face, stroking tentatively for the news that was to come.
‘’My love has never faded away. It has survived through many shifts of time.’’.

Jack said nothing.
..’’What I’m about to tell you, will explain my disappearance, somewhat, but, I fear, will shock you. ‘’ She continued.

‘’I am sorry, my love, but this is the only way we can ever converse’’.
Jack looked up, confused.

‘’What do you mean? I don’t understand what your trying to tell me.’’ .
‘’Please, be patient. I’m giving you this gently. Don’t rush me. I have been in a different time zone to you for many years. Time behaves differently here than on earth.’’ Lucy sighed. ‘’I miss earth’’.
Jack started.

Quickly, she put a finder to his lips to hush him.
‘’Please’’. She continued. ‘’Let me finish’’

I have been in limbo for a long, long time. I am not sure how long, exactly, but I went missing when i turned 16. All I remember after that, is waking up somewhere, light, free of my earthly body. I wasn’t scared. On the contrary, I felt very calm. All I was concerned with, was trying to reach you, to tell you that I was alright..that I was..somewhere else.. But I know now that something had happened to me.

Something truly terrible. I tried to get to you through air waves, and on several occasions, I succeeded. But then you suddenly stopped ‘hearing’ them, and I had no way of communicating with you. And then I learnt that I could come into your dreams.

It took a long time, I think, in your time but to me, I raced at the speed of sound, the speed of air waves.

I’ m sorry, my love, but I am dead.’’. She shuddered, huge tears welling up in her eyes.

Jack stepped back from her, breaking free of her gentle grasp. ‘’No!’’ He shouted. ‘’This cannot be. You are but a dream, a delicious, but very cruel dream. To taunt me with what I cannot have, you are heartless indeed! You are but a phantasm anyway.’’

‘’No!’’ Lucy cried. ‘’While it is true that I am no longer human, I am no more a ‘phantasm’ then you yourself are. Please, do not do this. It took me a lot of strength to come before you.’’

Jack sighed.

''Do you know how long I have thought about you? I could never get you away from my heart, and nobody has even crept close to you.''

He moved closer.

Lucy bent her head.

'I know. I could always feel you above the airwaves. I felt others too, their pains, but your love surmounted even the
most sufferable.

That is the empathy within. A price I had to bear, in order to try to find you, like a magnet it attracted many others, love's requiems, all emotional pains. But your love never faded. It kept me strong. And hopeful' Thank you for loving me, you brought me into your dreams, helped lifted the shadow of death from my vallies.'

She lent in towards Jack, staring up at his eyes, her own eyes mirroring his reflection perfectly.

His eyes searched hers, until he could bear it no longer.

The two embraced, in a long, deep kiss. It was heaven again, for Jack. It felt like home, once more.
