Chess: More Information

The pieces are split into black and white sets. Each player, named by the color of the pieces they have, begins the game with sixteen pieces: a king, a queen, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, and eight pawns. The white player always moves first.

The players each move one piece at a time; pieces are moved to either an empty square, or an occupied one by an opponent's piece, removing it from play.

When an opponent's piece is in range to take the opposing king, the king is said to be in check. When in check, the player may only make a move that takes their king out of check - by moving a different piece in the way, taking the attacking piece, or simply moving the king out of check are the general ways to do this. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent; this occurs when the opponent's king is in check, and there is no way to remove the king from check.
