The goal of the game is to put the opponent's king in checkmate. black's king is in check if white could capture black's king. To not be captured, black has to make a move that removes the king from check, so it cannot be captured on the next turn.
If it's not possible for black's king to be removed from check, then the king is checkmated and white wins. Another way for the game to end is if the current player cannot make any legit moves; this is called a stalemate. When this happens the game ends in a draw.
