Empress of the world review
I consumed this book in a single go (read; three hours). It might have been my need to escape from reality in the pages of a book belonging to someone possibly more fucked up than myself or it might have been the voice of this book that caught me so. The main character, Nicola, is just clever. She's funny, yeah, but in a smart admirable kind of way. This book tells the story of Nicola who goes to a summer camp type thing to decide what she wishes to do with her life. She's leaning towards archeology. Along the way the makes friends and eventually falls in love with a beautiful girl, Battle Hall. The book is short and snappy in the way it is written, sparing you the details and missing a few things I thought were rather important but might have been cut out to make the story more interesting for people who don't wish to read a book that's seven hundred pages long and decide to settle for something short, sweet and simple which would be this seventy or so page book of almost - but not quite- cliched' romance. I was mildly dissapointed that she didn't expand on a few of the characters whom I thought would be important (maybe I was reading between the lines a little too much) but all in all it was an excellent read.
