Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone review

It has been at least a couple of years since I read the first Harry Potter book. So now it's time to read them all in a row - in Finnish.

I won't waste time to tell about the plot. You all know it. Basic tale of a kid growing up, being a nobody and suddenly it is revealed that s/he is a prince / princess/ wizard / awesome / has powers etc. But even though the book and the whole series follows the ancient storylines of good versus evil and a hero growing up and learning his place, there is still something catchy in Rowling's piece.

As I now read the book again I realised how much there has been left from the movies. You get to know the characters better. You learn some stuff what gives you better idea of the world it is about. You are given some casual information that doesn't seem important at the moment, but later on in the series you get hit in the back of your head with that same information and get all excited - if you remember it from the first time.

Even though the first two books might be the weakest ones, they're still great and you get sucked into the world filled with magic, muggles, witches and wizards. Rowling's style of writing is vivid and easy to follow (and not just in the translation, I've read at least three books in original language) and the Finnish translator has done great work with all the new words Rowling has invented.

It doesn't take long to finish the book, which is kind of sad too: you just devour the book and then it's done.

But don't worry, still six more to go...
