I Dreamt I Died
Original
He could hear them talk, he could see them too, but for some reason he couldn’t speak, he couldn’t open his eyes. He found this most odd. They shook him, they tried to coax him awake they even pinched him, but even though he was so sure he was looking straight at him, they seemed not to know he was awake.
“Maybe he’s just sad?” His mother questioned, reaching out to stroke his cheek lovingly, smiling down at him. Yami tried to smile and tell her that he was just fine, but no words would come. How odd.
“Or maybe he’s dead?” His father offered, sounding almost hopeful.
Dead? Surely that wasn’t so… He was just asleep… but he couldn’t wake up. In his mind he was struggling hard to speak but he suddenly forgot how. His eyes, although heavy with sleep, were still somehow able to see everything around him. Odd... so odd. It never occurred to him that he was dreaming.
The scene changed suddenly and it took a moment for Yami to orient himself. He was being set into a casket gently floating in the sea. His mother was crying, stroking his cheek. She was standing waist deep in the water, staring down at her son. He could see her—and he could hear her. She was whispering. “I’ll fix you, Yami. I promise. I’ll fix you. Don’t you worry. I promise.”
He didn’t feel scared anymore. He knew she would never lie to him. His hands were folded neatly over his stomach and it was only then that he realized how young he was. Eight, maybe nine. Part of him seemed to be confused about this but the other part quickly accepted it.
The casket was suddenly closed and for the first time he was plunged into darkness. Yet, he still wasn’t afraid. He knew that his mother was going to help. She had said so. She had promised.
All around him little streams of water began to break through his wooden coffin. He suddenly felt his heart begin to pound in his chest. It felt strange… the water was warm, almost pleasant. It was then that he found himself able to move. His eyes opened, bright crimson eyes blinked in the total darkness. His little hands lifted to touch the wood all around him. Water began to fill higher and higher and he couldn’t help but have the sensation that he was sinking.
“Mother?” he called. He waited for a moment, expecting a response. When she did not answer he began to push urgently on the wood above him. Maybe he could free himself? It did not budge. He pushed harder, suddenly feeling desperate—terribly afraid. Where was his mother? What was she doing? Wasn’t she going to help him?
He began to tear at the wood. His nails ripped away from skin and blood began to ooze from his nail-less fingers. Blood dripped onto his face, thick, hot, suffocating. He began to scream—maybe she just couldn’t hear him? Maybe if he screamed louder?
It was as the water began to rise above his chin and ears that he felt suddenly enraged. She had promised! She had promised she was going to fix him. She had promised!
“You said you would fix me!” He screamed and water began to choke him. He coughed hard, but couldn’t quite catch his breath, “You promised!”
Water was all around him and he was sinking freely down to the bottom of the ocean—the casket around him was curiously gone. His body floated awkwardly in the water, his eyes half-lidded. He was aware that he was not breathing, but he wasn’t holding his breath either. He felt almost peaceful. His eyes closed.
/Is that what it feels like to die? I feel like I’m just sleeping… /
He tried opening his eyes but he couldn’t. It felt like he was somewhere between sleep and wakefulness. It made his head tingle and his eyes twitch… He suddenly remembered how his mother had abandoned him and he tried to cry. But he was dead. He couldn’t cry. He wondered if she would cry for him… Why had she left him? She had promised…
Yami tapped the end of the quill absently against the corner of his mouth. What a strange dream… He did not dream often of his mother, but when he did, it was usually pleasant dreams—pleasan
t memories. How strange it was to dream as though she had abandoned him. He knew that she had not.
The demon sighed quietly, setting the quill down and leaning back in his chair. His eyes shifted towards the window where the night sky glittered back impressively with its star-strewn sky. After waking up from the strange and startling dream he had quietly left to sit in the library. There was no point in waking Kaelin.
Unwillingly his mind returned to the dream. ”You said you would fix me.” His child-like self had said accusingly, bitterly.
Fix? What was there to fix? Yami pushed his glasses back onto his nose and chewed at his lip absently. There was no point in trying to decipher dreams. Dreams were, in themselves, a world that he found unexplainable and illogical. There was no point to dwell on their ‘hidden’ meaning when he was sure that they had none.
Then again, he had never dreamed about dying.

A/N:Based highly on a dream I had this morning. Altered a little bit to fit Yami's life. I've never dreamed of dying before, so I guess it sort of startled me a little. I figured I should put it into a story since it invoked some emotion in me. Lol.
