This is an introduction to matrices and determinants. We will look at matrix arithmatic, systems of linear equations, and linear programming. I will split the class into four parts, and each part with have within it several sections. There will be an optional practice portion at the end of each section, and if you so wish, I will check your answers and look at your work.
For these excercises, a graphing calculator or program might come in handy. You don't need one, but might find it useful.
Our Goals
1. To be able to use matrices and elementary row operations to solve a system of linear equations.
2. Perform addition, subtraction, and multiplication of matrices.
3. Use determinants and inverse of matrices.
4. Use linear programming to maximize or minimize a linear function to given constraints.
If you don't understand these goals, don't worry. The lessons will help with that.
Part One: Systems of Linear Equations
