The Medieval Underworld
by Andrew McCall
This is a book about the people who did not conform to Medieval society - thieves, mercenaries, prostitutes, the extremely rich, the extremely poor, witches, etc. It's an interesting topic, but McCall's style makes it rather dreary. The book is packed with information, but the writing is so academic and flat that it often leaves the reader in a bit of a daze. I can recommend this book more as a reference for research, reading the relevant bits, rather than reading it all the way through.
