2005-02-12 [M_Sinner]: How can they learn if there are no kata? Sorry, perhaps I am limited in my learning, but kata were one of the only ways (and the most efficient way) I ever learned martial arts. How did they train, and develop a distinct style?
2009-11-15 [manwe]:
first of all, "kata" is a japanese word and can not be related exactly to chinese martial arts, such as paqua. a better term might be "forms", and there are some exercises that are practiced in paqua.
the point of "forms", or "kata" or any other derivation of the term for "exercise" or "practice" is to put together certain aspects of the knowledge, in some formal sequence, in order to simulate it's actual use in a more practical manner.
ALL martial arts do this to some degree or another, but they are merely exercises in which you can get the concept of the practical use or simulated use of these learned skills, in some possible combinations, in some possible situations. in a "real" battle or fight, you would be expected to have assimilated the individual skills, and understood some possible combinations, in order to effectively use them.
while this "class" is, so far, the best presentation, it is abysmal and in need of revisions.
these martial arts groups need some instructors and people who know some real and true answers....
