This is the first book written by Brandon Sanderson. I have to admit the only reason I picked it up was because of his work on The Wheel of Time series and it turned out to be a good idea.

The book is a fast read that keeps you interested. The characters are believable and fun to follow as they deal with the political and personal problems that they face.

The book starts ten years after the fall of the Elantrins who had magical abilities to turn dirt to food, heal the sick and other things. Anyone could become an Elantrin and it is a random occurrence. The fall occurred called the Shaod and now it has become a curse to be an Elantrin. You body becomes splotched, your hair falls out and your wounds no longer heal. It is as if you are a dead person who's mind is still working. You still feel pain and hunger. If you are cursed you are thrown into the now deserted city of Elantris. The city is full of the cursed and they have divided into factions that run the city. Some are so mad from their unhealed wounds that they just wonder or crumple unable to die.

Sarene, a Foreign princess has come to the new capital of Arelon Kae to merry the Prince Roaden. It is a strictly political move for the pair, but they are hoping to find love. The day before Sarene arrives Roaden is taken by the Shaod. The King claims that Roaden has died but Sarene is still stuck in the marriage.

This is just the beginning and to unravel the story you will just have to read the book.

2013-05-27 [Viking]: I started reading Sanderson when I heard he was going to finish WoT. So far, I've only read Elantris, Warbreaker, and The Way of Kings.I enjoyed all 3, and I want to read Mistborn sometime.

2014-01-14 [pegasus1000]: Mistborn is fun but in the end a bit predictable.
