Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore review
Travis was studying to be a priest when he unwittingly released the demon Catch from his prison. Travis became Catch's master, although sometimes Catch didn't obey him. For the next 70 years, Travis tried to keep Catch from doing what Catch enjoys most - eating people.
Finally, Travis finds the address of an old friend who may be able to help him send the demon back to hell. So, off he goes to Pine Cove, California. At the same time, Gian Hen Gian
* comes to Pine Cove in hopes of fulfilling King Solomon's last command to him. Gian Hen Gian teams up with Augustus Brine, an old man who runs the local bait shop/fine wine store.
Catch, however, has other ideas. He doesn't care much for Travis as a master because he won't let him eat people all the time. So, when in Pine Cove, he seeks out a new master...
Overall, it's a hilarious tale typical of Christopher Moore. It's a very fast-paced story with plenty of action, humor, and interesting insights into the world. Also, there are some excellent references to Lovecraft. Most overtly is the character Howard Phillips who runs HP's Cafe and serves Eggs Sothoth for breakfast.
*King of the Djinn, Ruler of the Underworld. Do not tremble, he wishes you no harm.
