Mother Flame

Crackle, crackle, flicker, flick,
Ever-moving shadows shift;
As fire crackles in the night,
Flicking in and out of sight.

Burning, scalding, biting hard,
To all so stupid enough to dare
To stick there hands down in the heat,
To warm their fingers, nice and neat.

Mother flame must be quite great
To be able to give us light,
And yet be able to let us know
When we've crossed the line.
