Blood Ties
by [Kaeirdwyn]
This show stars Christina Cox, Kyle Schmid, Dylan Neal and Gina Holden. It airs on the lifetime channel on Friday nights, usually at 11:00 pm eastern time, however as far as the rest of the world, I am not sure. The show is based on the "Blood" books by Tanya Huff. The first season premiered March 11, 2007. The second season started October 12, 2007 and is still going strong.
This show combines the elements of a good suspenseful crime drama with the supernatural and the darker aspects of fantasy. To make a good crime drama there has to be realistic crimes, and investigating. This show rates a B to a B- at times in that department, only because they are handed their information from the medical examiner every time. Though they may go out and investigate, their clues always come from the body of a deceased person, or from themedical examiners' findings. Though this is not bad, it gets a little overdone.
That said, their investigating, since it is a private investigation firm, is done well. The fact that most of their crimes they are involved in or are asked to solve have dark fantasy or supernatural events occuring in them is just a part of the show. If you can accept that these other things exist in the world(at least on the TV world), then this show will work for you.
The other part that might draw a crowd, is the main character, Vicki is friends with none other than Henry Fitzroy, vampire extraordinaire
. He is 480 years old. He tells her little by little about his sub culture of vampires, why there is never one living in the same area as another, and tries to help her as she is drawn into problems banishing some demons.
At one point she is taken hostage by the person who is bringing the demons out and he tattoos demon symbols on her wrists. These tend to glow when there are demons or evil forces at work nearby. It is an interesting plotline and there is definite attraction between Vicki and Henry. Of course, this is where Vicki's ex in more ways than one steps in and disrupts things. The best part of the show is that when missing one or two of the episodes, there is no feeling that there will be vital information lost or gone. It is not like a soap opera where if you have missed even one show, there is no figuring out what is going on from there. The darker supernatural influences are there, and the demons and other beings they fight against have realistic looks and don't seem fake. Overall, seeing as how it is not on a primetime channel with primetime money backing it, they are doing fairly well and are able to reach a wide audience. Recommendations for this program for those who like shows to do with vampires, with very little gore, are 4 stars. Enjoy, snuggle in and have a great night! [Kaeirdwyn]
