These humans have been endowed by the gods with special abilities. They are neither god nor human, they are neither young nor old, they are timeless, thus they are called the Elders.
They are the Watchers, responsible for maintaining order. It is to them that the gods passed the prophecy to, and from them they passed to the mortals. They know it is up to the mortals to save humanity, all they can do is observe and offer a little help, if they are sought out.
