The Good Earth; Pearl S. Buck review
In the book
The Good Earth Pearl S. Buck teaches many life lessons without straight out telling us the moral of her story (or morals). In this book a man works hard and goes through many hardships in order to provide for his family. Through all of the hard times he must endure, he never once gives up his land, the soil he works so hard to cultivate and control. But the hard times turn into good times, and his harvest becomes large and he is able to buy more land, and eventually becomes rich. The whole time he refuses to sell his land, even when he moves into a great house and rents out what property he owns.
At the end of the book Buck writes, "..."If you sell the land, it is the end"... But over the old man's head they looked at each other and smiled" (Buck 357).
I think this shows how greedy sons can become when they haven't gone through hardship like their parents have, and do not know how much they owe to, in specific, the land.
Overall a very good read, and a captivating story that will leave you wanting more.
