The Poem Duel

[Auroron] vs. [DracoDormiens]

“T’was the night before Christmas,
When all through the house,
Every creature was stirring,
Right down to the mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney in fear.
They knew Auroron was soon to be there.
His face shows the devil.
His eyes’ like the sun.
And his teeth are of course the thing people shun.”

“Oh shut up!” DracoDormiens said fed up, she’d been listening to the stupid boy for almost the entire evening, now things were getting out of hand. “T’was he night before Christmas? What kind of lame beginning of a poem is that? And besides, it isn’t even Christmas!” She added.
Auroron looked at her, angry that she had interrupted what he had thought was a marvelous poem. “Well, do you think you could do any better?” He asked her challengingly.
“Me? Of course I can.” She said, standing up on a table and taking a deep breath.

“Three rings for the pointed eared men, under the sky.
Seven for the fat ones in their halls of stone,
Nine for the short lived ones doomed to die
One for Dark Lord on her dark throne
In her messed up room were the shadows lie.
One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all and there forever bind them
In her messed up room were the shadows lie.

Hah! Not half bad,” DracoDormiens said pleased with herself.
“That was just pathetic,” Auroron said. “You disgrace the world of poems!” He stood up, walked over to her and said seriously; “I challenge thee to a duel!”
“Yey!” Someone shouted from the room. Both poets turned around and saw [Morbid Carrot] smiling. The looks from them wiped it quickly of her face and she muttered something as she went back to her beer. “Very well,” DracoDormiens said, “A duel it is.” Then she looked a bit helpless, “Eh…what kind of duel?”
“What kind of duel?” Auroron exclaimed, “A poem duel of course!”
“Oh, I didn’t know there was such a thing as a poem duel.” DracoDormiens said confused.
Auroron went quiet, he hadn’t thought about that. “Well, there is now,” he finally said, “I’ll start.” He went over to the wooded disk and climbed onto it. Then clearing his voice he began;

“Today we’ll have a poem duel
I’ll win of course ‘cause I’m so cool.

DracoDormiens looked at him in detest.

“You think it so,
But we can’t know
Yet one thing that we know for sure
You make all ears around you sore.”

A few cheers were heard from the room, but soon it went silent and they turned their attention towards Auroron.

“The soreness that may be my doing
Must rather come from all the booing
For when they’ve heard what I have said
All else to them seems plain and dead.”

This time there was more clapping and DracoDormiens waited impatiently for them to stop. When it became quiet again she continued.

“What piece of art!
Right from the heart!
You really got the rime to fit
To bad it didn’t really sit.”

Darn, DracoDormiens thought, that wasn’t the best poetry she had heard. She waited for Auroron to come with his part. It was obvious he was thinking hard. Then he brightened and began.

“It didn’t sit, that’s what you say
Then maybe this one, if you may,
You said it came right from the heart
Well so does this, a lovely tart.
Just as a tart is lovely sweet,
So is my comment, take a seat.”

He found a chair and pressed DracoDormiens into it and then continued.

“A poet’s pride is what he writes,
Of love and of his greatest frights.
It makes me wonder, for your sake
What pride have you for what you make?”

DracoDormiens looked up at him from were she sat. There was silence now. All that could be heard was the sound of the clock ticking and Morbid Carrot snoring in her corner. This was a hard one. She started staggering.

“What pride I have is more then you.
Just think about what you could do,
If you kept fears in your control
And not let them on page unroll”

She continued more confidently.

“Instead you tell the world your fares
You tell them all, but no one cares
Instead you let you heart be torn
And knowing this you even mourn.
Would it not been better to never write
And never share your greatest fright?”

Auroron looked at her amazed, but covered it quickly up with a cough. “I bet you thought you were pretty good now right?” He said mockingly. The straitening up he began.

“My greatest fright I poetrize,”

“Wait a minute,” DracoDormiens interrupted, “Poetrize? What kind of a word is that?”
“To poetrize something, to make it into a poem, it’s not that hard to understand.” Auroron said annoyed.
“Anyway, back to my poem.

My greatest fright I poetrize,
So other men might realize
That I too am a mortal being
Even though I seem all seeing.
It’s true that I am super cool
I know…

….eh…em….” Auroron went quiet, everyone looked at him with anticipation but all he did was turn red and look down.
“What is it? Cat caught your tongue?” DracoDormiens asked mockingly.
Auroron looked up at her slowly and said ashamed, “I got stuck.”
DracoDormiens laughed and said;

“It seems Auroron’s lost the duel
It seems he isn’t quit that cool
And as he’s out we all agree
The one who won the duel is me!”

There came a loud cheer from the room. Morbid Carrot woke up just in time to see DracoDormiens lifted onto the shoulder of two strong and quite handsome looking men. Then she and the sound disappeared out the door into the darkness, leaving Morbid Carrot alone in the dimmed room. “More beer!” She shouted tired.
