The Silence of Trees - Valya Dudycz Lupescu review

This was, at times, an exceptionally sad book. At best, it was bittersweet, but it was nonetheless a very good read, even if it left a lump in my throat at the end.

The story follows Nadya, a Ukranian, from the age of sixteen to the age of seventy. The story is told between flashbacks and 'modern day' (approximately somewhere in the 1990s, though I did not check my math just now). It is a historical fiction with a touch of the otherworldly-- the story begins with Nadya going to visit the local gypsy camp to get her fortune told, and quickly spirals into a series of tragic events against the backdrop of WWII. It's a story of love, death and regrets and what-ifs.
