Tyson: Alhazred review

Donald Tyson wrote this tale of Abdul Alhazred, the author of the Necronomicon. It's written in first-person, as if it were an autobiography by Alhazred. The story follows his early days as a court poet to the king of Yemen through his travels throughout the Arabic world and his encounters with creatures of the Cthulhu Mythos.

Alhazred is a pretty unlikable character. He's pretty much a complete monster. Along the way he somehow gains a sidekick - a streetwise teen named Martala. It's really unfortunate that she's stuck with Alhazred in this novel, because she could have been a good character in her own right. Oh well.

This book was OK. The writing was a bit lackluster. It was simply too long. It just didn't really compliment Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos the way that it should have. I don't really recommend it, but there are worse things out there.

2010-08-05 [Viking]: Yeah...It really had a lot of promise. I think about half-way through the book I would have given it a 4, even with the poor writing...then it just didn't really go anywhere.

Well, it made Alhazred go all over the place but there was no gain for the reader.
