Wuthering Heights; Emily Bronte review

Let me be frank: this book is terrible. I'm not quite sure why it's a classic - to me it's the pre-1900's version of Twilight. Creepy stalker-boy meets annoying whiny girl and they "fall in love" only to be separated due to their own selfishness and cruel hearts. The style of writing is decent, but the story does seem to drag on for forever. This is not something I'd read again, unfortunately.

2010-08-03 [windowframe]: I have to admit, I really wasn't a fan of Wuthering Heights when I read it, but then afterwards I started to wonder if this wasn't more my own fault than the book's. I think Wuthering Heights is one of those books (like Gulliver's Travels) that his been completely mis-categorised by society, so when people read it expecting some gothic love story they're disappointed because they didn't get what they expect. But that's hardly the book's fault. I think if more people read it without expecting it to be a love story then fewer people would be disappointed in it. As 'classic' authors go I'm really not a hue fan of any of the Bronte sisters, but I think they're probably better than most of us give them credit for (though I doubt I could ever bring myself to say much in the way of praise for Jane Eyre <_<).

2010-08-03 [Akayume]: I agree. The writing is oke- I mean, I've certainly read worse. But everything thinks "OMFGGG IT'S SOOO ROMANTICC" and it really isn't. I mean, to be honest, uhhh... what's his face (the main guy) is kind of a prick. >.>

2010-08-03 [windowframe]: Heathcliff. And he's more than 'kind of' a prick, but so is Kathy. :P They're completely self-destructive and so is their relationship. It's not a story about love, it's a story about mental and emotional abuse.

2010-08-03 [Akayume]: I totally agree! I felt sorriest for the girl who marries Heathcliff and then runs away. Kathy, however, I had no sympathy for. (Thank youu! I am terrible with names. DX Horrid. I wrote an AP essay for Wuthering Heights, and I could only remember his name and Kathy's, so I had to focus on just them. XD) They's so selfish too! They say they love each other but they don't. And they're too full of themselves to ever really love someone.

2010-08-03 [windowframe]: The collateral damage characters. :P Exactly. The whole thing is not about love, but about what love is definitely not. Mind, I still find the whole 'unreliable narrator' question with nelly and the visitor incredibly annoying. I don't really see what that adds to the story. <_<

2010-08-03 [Akayume]: I agree! I was so confused when I started reading it.
