The Danger Room Hist3
You do know the Danger Room... don't you?
X-Men Danger Room
X-Men Danger Room Hist1 - Newcomers' Dodgeball
X-Men Danger Room Hist2 - Explaining the Missions
Tuesday, the 21st of September
Vlad's fists clenched at his sides as he listened to Myetel, images in his head flashing about tearing the bastard apart until he was utterly unrecognizable
. "Shut the fuck up, you vorthless shit," Vlad spat hatefully after Xavier left. He had to laugh at the way Xavier had put Myetel in his place and he bumped purposely into Myetel on his way to inspect the electrical device. "Never vos good at electronics," he said to himself as he inspected the pile of things.
Jean walked into the room, gathered Valerie's luggage, and left again into X-Men Hall Complex.
The room took on a less sterile feel, turning into a sort of workshop with tables and tools lining the outer wall. There were welding materials, an entire set of screws, saws, hammers, nails, screwdrivers, drills, and other such tools. In a large cabinet with a door standing ajar is all the safety equipment needed - body suits, welding masks, gloves, tongs to touch hot metal, goggles, and heavy duty boots. Everything needed to assemble and reassemble the parts is provided, along with the space to do so.
Shana scoffed at Myetel's comment, then smirked When Xavier shot back. When Xavier left she turned on her heel and made her way to the safety equipment without a word or glance at Myetel, the tips of her hair fading into black. She proceeded to put on a par of goggles and skipped the rest of the paraphernalia, knowing it would only hinder her abilities. She then crossed the room toward the pile of machine parts while pulling her hair into thin pigtails, using rubberbands on her wrists. She stopped and looked up at Vlad, then to the pile. "Soo..."
"<Language, idiot!>" commented Myetel to Vlad in Russian, more happy about having made him angry than pissed about the insults. He considered just leaving, but thought that maybe playing the stupid game was worth him getting to stay in the mansion. He easily sidestepped Vlad's attempted bumping – there was no way he'd let the other touch him. When the room changed, Myetel promptly spent a few seconds getting all of the appropriate gear on himself and then turned to look at the parts. "So, do I start working or do you want to royally screw this up?"
"Vell you could help us vith vot you need and explain vot you're doing. You're the only person here vith electronic experience but Shana and I aren't just going to sit around," Vlad retorted as he pulled on a pair of gloves and rested a pair of goggles on his head. That stupid fucking Myetel...this mission was going to be harder than he assumed. "But if something like that is too far beyond you, I'm not entirely surprised."
"I'm quite certain that I can get whatever I need faster than you can unless it involves smashing something into bits or getting something out of a wall", said Myetel and started to inspect the parts they needed to put together to determine what they needed and what was missing. "Meanwhile you could build a protective wall around this device and me if you'd like to do something helpful."
"Myetel!" Shana screamed and turned sharply toward him. "Listen, we're tired of your pompous bullshit, ok?! The Professor teamed us for a reason, because we're more suited for this job. Just shut the hell up and go with it! Vlad can carry the heavy stuff, you're smart enough to assemble it, and I can help to fix parts." Shana's hair color quickly smoothed out to totally black. "Seriously, if you were slow enough, I would help Vlad rip your legs off and then attach them to a dog who might appreciate us more. I mean, damn, kid!" She stomped her foot childishly, not looking quite as mad as she truly was, because of her youth. She turned her gaze toward Vlad without waiting for a response and huffed loudly.
"Well this is an overreaction if I ever saw any, kids", said Myetel in a mock-surprised manner. "Why don't you lay low with the infantile insults and threats for a while? If I didn't care..." His voice trailed off and he grinned to himself, thinking how to silence the others. He didn't even stop working while talking.
Vlad was trying his hardest not to simply wait for Myetel to be too immersed in his tinkering and then stand behind him and rip his goddamn head right off his shoulders. Though not ordinarily a violent man, Vlad had a different opinion of Myetel and nothing would change it. However, stuck on a team with him as he was, Vlad knew there was only one way to get through it: make himself useful. Crossing over to the other corner of the room where large panels of steel were resting, Vlad easily gathered an arm-load of them and brought them back to a worktable near Myetel, letting them crash to the table without much care - it was steel anyway. Not like it would bend or break. Then Vlad went over to inspect the welding materials, finding a manual on how to operate them. Flipping through the book to gain some much-needed info, Vlad saw the equipment he needed. "Hey Shana, vood you mind grabbing me the velding mask and the apron from the cabinet near you?"
"Ughh," Shana grunted at Myetel's last remark. "Sure, Vlad," she replied, turning to the cabinets. She shuffled through the items, looking for a mask and an apron that would fit Vlad. Finding the largest of the two, she tossed them to Vlad. "Here ya go." She then walked to the stand beside the pile of parts. "Ok, so where do we begin?"
While Vlad and Shana were thinking of being useful, Myetel ignored them and had already assembled two separate pieces from the parts he had. "Now we need a piece that will fit these two together, and I'm not seeing it here. I'm guessing it's some kind of adapter and transformer and it should fit right between here. I have no clue how long it is, but I guess not very." He looked at the smaller half of the device and went on: "That doesn't look very complete either, but I can't tell what's missing exactly." Having said that, Myetel got rid of some of his protective equipment, especially the shoes, but kept some on. "Are you coming?" he said as he ventured out of the room inside the Danger Room.
Vlad pulled the apron over his head and tied it in the back, then pulling on the large pair of gloves. He didn't look up when Myetel spoke, though he was listening with a snarl on the edge of his face. Even the waif's voice made him angry. However, he staunched the desire to kill him by immersing himself in his project. "Nope, I'll make the voll you vonted," he replied, flipping to the page where it instructed him how to turn the machine on. He pushed the helmet over his head and made a quick measurement with a ruler before indicating where he needed to adjoin the two sheets of metal. Angling them on the worktable without much effort, Vlad pushed down the protective flap of the welding mask and set the torch to the edges of metal, pushing them together to get a clean weld.
Just then, in the corner furthest away from all of them, a small explosion was set off, blasting dirt and debris all over and making a noise loud enough to hurt the ear drums. Smoke followed, not terribly thick so that they couldn't breathe, but enough to make their work even more difficult.
As the explosion was set off, Shana jumped and ducked down, covering her ears. She looked around after a second, trying to spot Vlad or Myetel through the cloud of debris. "What the hell was that?!" she shrieked, still squatting near the ground.
Myetel covered his eyes and ear quickly enough before the explosion and when the dust and smoke were evident, he went to look for a breathing mask – with his breathing rate, smoke would be quite annoying. He refrained from telling Shana that it had been an explosion and instead went to search for the missing pieces.
Looking up when the blast sounded, Vlad was standing perfectly still with his welding project in front of him as the smoke and debris came flying. Lucky for his goggles and the welding mask, he was perfectly safe, and his powers dictated that an explosion wouldn't damage him. Still, he was shocked and couldn't help but chuckle in nervous surprise as the dust began to settle. "This voll is going to be handier than ve thought," he said as he stood up one panel of it to see how sturdy it was. It stood straight and firmly, all Vlad needed to do was weld two other large sheets to it and Myetel would be able to assemble the device in relative safety.
Shana grunted and stood, shaking her hair out. "How many times are things going to explode around here?" She looked at Vlad's project for a moment, then added, "I guess since I haven't done a thing, I'll come help weld." She made her way over to where Vlad was standing the panel. "If you can weld half, I can connect the other. Unless Xavier has something else in mind for me. Other than that, I'm not too much use."
"No, that vood be great," Vlad replied to Shana, pointing to the next panel that he needed. "If you hold the edge flush with this at a slight angle then the voll vill stand on its own vithout needing feet," He said as he tipped the large sheet of metal up with his fingers to help her out. Then flipping the mask down, he set to work firing up the welding torch.
Shana nodded and held the board exactly as Vlad showed her. She looked over her shoulder in the opposite direction to shield her eyes as Vlad opened flame onto the metal.
Noticing that the flames were likely to injure Shana, Vlad stopped what he was doing and leaned the heavy panels against a workbench. Crossing over to the safety cabinet, he grabbed a pair of goggles, gloves, and mask from them. He returned quickly to Shana and offered them to her. "Last thing ve need is for you to get hurt," he said as he adjusted the settings on the welding gun to make the flame a bit more narrow and thusly more precise.
Shana nodded and took the equipment from Vlad. She gave a thanks as she worked to get the items onto her body, then placed her hands back onto the panel to hold it.
Flipping his mask down after he was certain that the width was adequate and no greater, Vlad held up his panel, making sure it was flush with Shana's, and touched the hot flame to the metal. The process wasn't terribly fast and his craftsmanship wasn't perfect but after a moment he stood back and turned off the gun. Pushing the mask up, he inspected the seal to see if he needed to go over any places. Deciding that he did, Vlad righted his mask and turned the flame back on to ensure that his work wouldn't fall apart or prove less than quality.
Myetel ran around in a circle to create a little vortex of air to suck out the smoke from where he needed to see. Having done that, he started going through the shelves and after a moment, found what he was looking for. Grinning to himself, he grabbed it and ran back to where the other parts were. He put on some protective headgear just in case in addition to the stuff he already had and connected the pieces.
Shana continued to hold the panel in place, patiently waiting for Vlad to decide when the wall was welded well enough to stand on its own. As Myetel removed the debris from the air, she was thankful that, as stubborn as he and Vlad were, they could all work together to get this project done.
His attention elsewhere, Vlad barely noticed the vortex that Myetel created though he did flip up his mask as soon as he was satisfied with his work. Stepping back, he let go of the metal and gestured for Shana to let go of it too to see if it would stand on its own. By the looks of it, the wall was going to offer some protection. With the fingers of his gloves in his teeth to help yank them off, Vlad managed a grin. "Your voll is made," he called dryly over to Myetel. He didn't expect or want a response but he was certain that someone was watching them and didn't want to be a lousy team player. "Thanks for the help, our vork looks good," he said with a grin to Shana.
Just as suddenly as the explosion had happened, a siren began going off. The noise was loud - not loud enough to seriously damage their ears but loud enough to turn talking into shouting.
Shana nodded to Vlad and started to reply "You're welcome," but the sudden loud noise stopped her in mid-sentence. She winced and covered her ears, looking around. "What the hell is that noise for??!" she shouted. This mission was starting to get ridiculous.
Myetel looked satisfied until the connector between the two pieces he had put together fell out of its place and he found out that he needed to clip the thing to the other parts with something. He put away his mask and when the siren came, he covered his ears and went "<What the hell?!>" as well. He then went quickly through the shelves and having found hearing protectors, he put one on, shouted "Incoming!" and threw ones at both Vlad and Shana – he aimed to hit Vlad in the head with it by throwing it quite fast, but the protectors aimed at Shana were not fast at all since he thought Xavier would definitely not approve if he hurt her. Having done that, he started to go through the shelves again, looking for clips suitable for attaching the connector to the two other pieces.
The protector hit Vlad square in the head but he didn't seem to mind what with the welding mask still on. Grumbling and picking it up he gladly adjusted the protector over his mask and ears so he wouldn't suffer too much at the sound of the siren. "Vot else do you need to find? There are some cabinets over here vith stuff!" he shouted to Myetel.
Shana caught the ear protectors and quickly shoved them onto her head. Feeling a bit more satisfied, she looked up at Vlad. "We should either help him or worry about what we need to do next. Let's finish this wall before Xavier has us wearing full body armor!" she shouted as loud as she could over all the noise, though knowing Vlad likely couldn't hear a word she was saying. She could barely even hear herself.
"VOT?!" Vlad practically screamed and then he stopped bothering. He'd just wear his voice out at this rate. He'd have to signal to her. Seeing that Shana was pointing to the wall, he nodded and grabbed the last panel, guiding it into place so that she could hold it at an angle so the wall would be able to withstand debris. He then grabbed the torch and turned it on again.
Myetel remembered seeing some clips the last time he went through the shelves, so it didn't take him too long to find them. Having done that, he ran back to the device, attached the connector with the clips and looked satisfied with himself. Looking at the device, he thought that maybe it should be turned on, but he didn't want to do it himself, since, well, it could have been a bomb or something, though he very much doubted it. He found a good enough piece of paper, wrote "<Try turning it on>" on it and went to show it to Vlad.
Shana once again held the next wall steady for Vlad while he welded the panels together. She looked up when Myetel made his way over to "speak" to Vlad.
Vlad had just finished with his welding and was turning off the torch when Myetel came up to him. There was a scowl on the large Russian's face, but in the light of the annoying siren going off and all the debris still floating about in the air he didn't have much time to be irritable with Myetel. Reading the paper, he nodded and walked hurriedly (for him) over to the device, looking it over to see where to turn it on. Spying the place, he pushed the button and shielded his eyes, thinking that perhaps he shouldn't take his chances with his most vulnerable spot.
The device began to work immediately, lights flickering on under their bulbs to glow green or blue in a sequence that made no sense to Vlad or Shana, though Myetel might know if it was something particularly important. There was no screen and no keyboard but a series of buttons with numbers and letters written on them, without any semblance of chronological or alphabetical cohesion.
Myetel walked closer to the device again and first of all made clear that the lighting wasn't a countdown, because that would have made his bomb warning go off. Since the button markings made no sense yet, he started to push them randomly, noting what kind of effect each of them had.
Shana walked over to the device, out of Myetel's way, staring at the blinking lights quizzically. "What's it do..." she began to ask, but trailed off when she realized no one could hear her. She crossed her arms and took a step back, waiting to see what would happen.
When nothing happened other than the blinking of lights, Vlad moved out of Myetel's way and stood next to Shana. His wall, it appeared, wasn't really necessary but it had distracted him enough from just standing around and he wasn't about to forfeit a job well done to erroneousness. Wincing a little at the shrill shriek of the alarm, Vlad walked over to his wall and hoisted it over his head, making sure he had enough clearance so that he wouldn't knock things around. He then set it down around Myetel and the machine.
The siren's wailing soon dissipated, every bit as abruptly as it had begun. The device was still blinking, though some sort of pattern was being established - three green, four blue, one red, repeat. As soon as Myetel's fast fingers mimicked the pattern, all the lights flashed green, as if he had unlocked something important. However, the device, small enough to be worn and light enough not to burden anyone, was still relatively unimpressive.
When the alarm faded, Myetel took off his ear protectors and looked at the device for a while and talked to himself, though he would have done so mentally if he didn't want the others to hear and respond. "So yeah? What does it do? Maybe I should just get out and leave it inside this wall."
Standing behind Myetel, Vlad was puzzled by the device. "This is vot Xavier needs?" he asked, the makings of a grin on his face. "Vell, votever he says I guess," he conceded with a shrug. He didn't dare to touch the device but he did study it pretty carefully from a distance. "Its so small you'd think you could just put it in your pocket," he said, still without any idea as to what the device did.
Shana removed her face mask and ear protectors, tossing them lightly to the side. She stared at the device, dumbfounded by how "important" their mission had been. "It's boring.... It probably explodes when we least expect it or something." She crossed her arms again and waited.
Vlad looked to Myetel and said offhandedly, <"Do you have any idea what this does? Doesn't look like a computer or anything that I've seen...">
Suddenly, the machine flashed all lights at once, indicating that it was clearly on and in use, though what the use was could not be determined. It was just begging to be touched...
Myetel looked at the device and then left the confines of the wall. "<It's pretty alien as far as I can tell, though I'm sure it's made of regular terrestrial material by humans. No clue what it does and I don't have my scanners. Not that I would bring my scanners near that. Why don't you hold on to it for now?>"
Shana looked between the two boys talking, obviously not comprehending what they could possibly be saying. She glanced at the device, then back to the boys, who seemed to be stalling. Shana then pranced over to the device and picked it up to look at it.
Myetel certainly didn't think that it was a very good idea for Shana to go fiddle with it, but honestly speaking, he just didn't care enough to try to stop or warn her.
"Because I'd probably break it," Vlad replied honestly, though admitting it to Myetel was not exactly the easiest of tasks. At least they had come through the mission so far without much contention, something that Vlad felt the two should be proud of, though this didn't stop his overall distaste for the gawky pale boy. Grateful that Shana was willing to touch the thing, Vlad watched, hoping to see something worthwhile.
As soon as Shana picked up the device, it became more obvious how to wear it and she strapped it easily to her head, almost like a headset telephone though, granted, bulkier. As soon as she'd done this, a covering a red scales - exactly like Flame's - began to cover her skin, starting from her forehead and rippling like the shuffling of crimson cards down her face and neck until she was mostly covered in them. However, if she scratched, she would find that they came off more easily than Flame's did, and Shana's new long talons at the end of her fingers were nowhere near as impressive as Flame's.
<"Holy shit!"> Vlad said, his eyes going wide as he watched Shana.
Shana looked around after attaching the device, wondering what Vlad was yelling about. Then she looked at her hands. She screamed. "What the hell happened to me?!" she shrieked. "Christ!" She began frantically rubbing the scales on her arms trying to remove them and rubbing faster as they began to fall. She then stopped for a second to look at her nails. "Oh my God.... Oh, God! What is this thing?!" she cried, rubbing at the scales again.
As Shana scratched, the scales began to scratch off, but within moment,s they were refreshed.
Vlad looked on, completely dumbfounded. He was instantly reminded of Flame, of whom he'd seen quite a bit the night before and wasn't about to forget. "Those are Flame's powers," he answered, still shocked. "She vent to the voods, right? Maybe she found the other device? Take it off, Shana, we don't know vot else it might do," Vlad suggested, still unable to tear his eyes away.
Shana grew more frustrated and scared, and she barely heard Vlad's voice above her own cries. Reaching to her head, she ripped the device away and threw it to the ground.
Seeing what happened to Shana, Myetel looked at her quite delightedly and laughed at her as she took on Flame-like characteristics.
As soon as Shana took off the device, the scales, talons, white hair, and black eyes vanished and she was just as she always used to be, though her hair had changed color due to her distress.
<"Don't be such a prick, she's obviously scared,"> Vlad chastised gruffly to Myetel, looking over his shoulder and he went to retrieve the device, handling it carefully. "I don't think you should throw it next time, Shana," he reminded sagely. "If this thing breaks then who knows vot ve'll haff to analyze."
Shana looked up at Vlad and nodded, slightly shaken. "So it's gone?" she asked with a quiver in her voice. She combed her fingers through the tail ends of her blackened hair, checking that she was back to normal. She glanced over at Myetel. "You're a jerk," she said simply. She sat down on the ground and looked down, poking at the floor a little.
Xavier, who had been watching through the Danger Room Control Room decided to enter the Danger Room after witnessing the spectacle. The door flew open, the room returned to its normal, dormant state, leaving only Vlad, Shana, and Myetel with the device and nothing else. In wheeled Xavier, who was looking at his team with a proud smile on his face. "Very well done, students. Thanks to your efforts, I believe now we know what this machine and the machine in the woods are capable of." He then looked to Shana on the floor, narrowing his brows in concern. "Are you all right, Ms. Tilar? I do hope you are only shaken and not seriously ill. If you should like to visit the infirmary, then we are on the right level and I would be happy to escort you. As for the rest of you, consider your mission complete. I suspect the others will be back soon. Until then, take some time off."
Myetel didn't bother replying either to Shana or Vlad, but instead kept chuckling a little. When Xavier told them they were free to leave, he did so without hesitation and left behind him a light breeze as he ran to X-Men Hall Complex.
Vlad looked to Shana for a moment, checking to see if she was all right.
With a nod to Xavier, he turned and walked out to X-Men Hall Complex.
Shana took a deep breath and let out a long sigh, trying to rid her uneven breaths. She looked up to Xavier and nodded. "Thank you, Professor. I'll be okay, though. I just need some food to calm me.." She rose and exited after the others.
