The Red Morning
The frosted grass crunched beneath their heavy footsteps as they fled from their castle. They felt partly guilty and partly righteous having done something that was overdue. They all rejoiced when their warlock loves were waiting for them on the outskirt of the garden.
“We’ve got to get to Windfire and Nightshade before anybody finds anything,” Flameshade announced as he took Snowgust beneath his heavy cloak to defend her from the winter wind.
“Why didn’t they come?” Lillybreeze asked Aquashade who was also holing his beloved under the protection of his cape.
“Windfire is supposed to have been with Nightshade. If they’re here, something looks suspicious,” Aquashade whispered.
Twilight was evident in the cold winter morning sky. It was a delicate painting that was still wet from the artist’s sudden, continuous burst of inspiration. The bonded lovers reached their leaders at last. They were huddled together in a clearing, ready to watch the sun rise into the sky.
“Everything went as planned?” Nightshade asked.
“Every deed is done,” Dewstone assured him.
“Excellent,” Nightshade stood and helped his beloved to her feet. “There is a boat for the colonies leaving today. We should be on it,” he suggested.
“That would be a good ending to this treachery, wouldn’t it, my son?” Lucithet asked.
Nightshade turned and looked in horror at his mutilated father. “I killed you, Lucithet,” Nightshade said evenly.
“Obviously, not,” Lucithet readied a ball of darkness in his hand. Nightshade threw Windfire out of the way and took the full blast himself, skittering across the frosted grass. “Are you ready for some more, filthy traitor?” the nearly dead old man spat.
“Fall over and die already,” Nightshade snarled before launching a ball of fire at his father who wasn’t even stunned by the impact.
Nightshade got to his feet and watched as his father started to speak. “I see that you all played your part. I went to my brother for help and he and his wife were both beheaded in their own bed. You all plotted this behind my back. For that, you are all cursed. None of you shall bear a treacherous child that may use our magic secrets!” Lucithet shot two more balls of darkness at his oldest son before turning to his daughter-in-law. Nightshade huddled over his wife, taking the elemental assault for her.
Crystalwind kicked Nightshade’s nearly lifeless body from her oldest daughter’s. She shot a bolt of lightning at Windfire and spat on her. “I know you organized this. You were in love with the warlock all of your life.”
“At least I can love!” Windfire spat before moaning in pain as a bolt of lightning his her flesh.
“You are a traitor and I will kill you now, and when I die in a few minutes, I’ll damn your soul,” the old witch spat before Dewstone slammed her sword through the old woman’s head.
Salem used his abilities quite well and beheaded his uncle.
“Windfire, Nightshade!” Snowgust cried as she shook both of them.
“It’s no use,” Flameshade bit back his tears.
