Java landed with a crash in the trees. Without Joselyn's winds holding her up, she could only glide. Her cheeks were flushed with anger and frustration, but she hardly knew why. She angrily pulled at the ground, making the world bend around her, and released, jumping much, much higher than she usually did.
As she ascended she found it harder and harder to breathe. She glanced up and found herself having no real chance of stopping anytime soon. She began to panic, and tried to duck herself under so that she could fall, but she only really knew how to fall after she'd reached zero g's. She went up so far it felt like her head was going to explode, and finally she peaked, and began to fall. And then she realized this was going to be the hard part.
Mort looked around and blinked as he saw the skid marks Java had left on the ground, cocking his head slightly because he did not see Java. "Right.." he said loudly incase she was still around "Dont mind me." He walked over to a small natural pond, it was dark and murky and Mort could hardly see the bottom threw the gunk. Sighing gently Mort started to remove his clothes, finding it much easier since Amy had burnt threw them. Dropping them to the floor he slowly started to wade into the pool. Soon he was looking up at the surface from underneath, laying on his back on the bottom and just staring upwards.
Amy wandered in alone, looking for Mort. She felt horrible. He was such a nice guy and yet she didn't give him much of a chance. Amy hesitated in calling him in fear of not hearing an answer.
Mort just lay at the bottom of the stagnant pool, not bothered by anything any more. He wasn't bothered that a fish was swimming around in his ribs, he wasn't bothered that a strange crab had crawled inside his skull... Above though Amy was nearing his pile of clothes. If she spotted them and looked hard enough she might be able to see the disturbance in the much Mort had made as he lay down.
When she saw the clothes,
Amy was stopped in her tracks. She desperately wanted to go no further and admit how horrid she had been. Her eyes started to water and tear up uncontrollably
. She was almost frozen in her stand.
Mort looked up slightly, causing ripples to spread up from the bottom. He looked at Amy, seeing her crying to herself. She could see his glowing eyes from the bottom of the pool now, almost the only thing that was bright in the pool.
Part of her knew that he wouldn't take her back for what she did. Hell, Amy wouldn't take herself back. When she saw Mort gleaming up at her, she didn't know what to do. He must hate me right now...
Mort's eyes winked out as he closed them again, thinking hard. Slowly a hand appeared out of the pool, holding itself open for AMy to take. It was covered with a thick black goo and un-nameable plants. It almost looked like a normal hand.
Amy took a few steps into the mucky water until it was about up to her hips. She removed her gloves and looked at his hand. So many thoughts were flying around in hear head. She slowly reached for his hand.
Mort gripped it tightly and slowly began to pull himself up. There was a wet slurping noise as he began to pull himself up, the wet dark slime clinging to him as he appeared. Finally he stood up, the slime coated him like a skin.
When he was standing straight up in front of him, Amy almost felt like dying. She didn't know what to do. She leaned forward and rested her head on him, her forehead against his collar bone.
Mort gently held her head close to him, her acid face slowly eating away at the slime until his bone started to appear. He was shivering gently and she knew it wasn't from cold. "Im sorry" he whispered, not daring to look down at her "Im so sorry..."
Amy wrapped her arms around him and pulled him closer, "Don't be an idiot!" she snapped, "I'm the one who is sorry! Stop being so nice! Be angry at me!"
"I'm sorry" Mort kept whispering over and over "I'm sorry I'm not a real person... I'm sorry I'm not a man." He began to stroke her head slowly "I'm sorry I cant be what you deserve."
"What I did was selfish, inconsiderate and flat-out cruel. I'm not forgiving you for something that you shouldn't be sorry for." Amy told him honestly. "And I doubt you can forgive me...I just came to apologize.." she cried
Mort shivered more "No... it's all my fault" he said, hugging her closer "I've got nothing to forgive, you cant control your heart..."
"I know...." Amy looked up at him, "...I can't." she pulled his skull close and kissed his teeth once more. Amy knew he couldn't feel it, but she didn't care...she didn't know what else to do.
Mort thought that the exact moment their faces touched, that one single millisecond, he could feel her lips against his face. He just held her there, pressing his skeletal teeth against Amy's lips as he tried his best to kiss her.
Amy could feel him trying his best. Tears flowed like a faucet out of her eyes. Mortimer was the best man that she could ask for, how could she have been so blind.
Mort pulled back slowly, whipping away her tears slowly "Dont cry Amy" he whispered "Everything's ok."
"How.." Amy hesitated, "How can you take me back so easily?"
"You're the only one who would take me anyway" Mort whispered "You're the first person ever to care about me. I feel so deeply about you... I.. I couldn't leave you if you still wanted to be with me. Im sorry if I seem a bit clingy at times but..." he let out a little sigh and let the comment hang.
Amy looked up at him, "I like you too...but please so easy on comments like that, ok? It just puts a lot of pressure on me. I want to know that if something did happen to me,...or us, that you won't sit at the bottom of a lake for eternity."
Mort stood still for a moment, then nodded gravely "I promise" he whispered as he hugged her tighter "On both things..."
Amy released him. "I was working on something in my room..." she looked at her arm.
Mort looked down as well, staring intently at her arm. He couldn't see a difference in it "What were you working on?"
"I'm determined to make myself human." Amy said, surely.
Mort nodded slowly and smiled at Amy "Good for you.." He leant forward and kissed her cheek gently "You doing well?"
"No...I need stronger bases." Amy replied, unsure if he had forgotten the whole thing.
Mort hadn't but what could he do about it? He just stared at her arm "Im sure they have some somewhere here."
"I have some sodium hydroxide, but I need something stronger to neutralize myself." Amy explained.
"That's totally lost on me" Mort said, staring deep into her eyes "But Im sure they can find something."
"I'm worried that it'll burn." Amy said before shrugging the thought, "Well if my mutation was sparked by something in the lab explosion...I'm certain that I will have a cure. Having skin, hair and organs will feel so good."
Mort nodded slowly, grabbing her hand and squeezing it "I'll help you" he said "I'll help you get your skin back."
"Wow....not even an official scientist and I already have an assistant? Not bad..." Amy smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
Mort smiled softly as he stroked back the blob on her head that counted as hair "You're a very good scientist as it is, and I want to help you get your skin back."
Amy smiled, "Thanks." she winked. She noticed that they were still standing in the murky water. With his hand in hers, she lead him out of it. "We should get you cleaned up."
"you could just run a hand over your suit, it'll burn away the slime on you. You can just shake me like a wet towel and beat me on a rock." Mort said, shaking his dirty hand.
Amy took both of her gloves off and tossed them by Mort's clothes. She held her hands out to him, "This would be less violent."
Mort smiled and took her hands, walking towards the bank slowly. As soon as his foot left the murky water the slime slid off quickly, splattering onto the the mossy floor. He looked down, puzzled slightly. "Strange stuff.." he said, kicking it gently "I thought it was more sticky."
"Guess I won't have to touch you all over then." Amy said, knowing it was dirty sounding, but not caring.
Mort looked back at the stinking pool and wondered if she would suspect if he turned right around and dove into the water again. Deciding not to he began to put on his hoody.
With her gloves still off, Amy pulled back her own head piece of her suit. Her pinkish purple hair bobbed a bit.
Mort's head popped out of his hood, struggling into the sleeves quickly. He stared at her as she pulled her hood down, wandering what she was doing.
Amy noticed his stare and thought she would explain, "It's really....restricting, if you know what I mean."
Mort nodded, not really understanding but accepting her word "I guess the whole 'skin tight' thing must feel rather binding."
Amy turned so her side was facing him. She was trying to cover both her front and butt. "Yea..."
Mort let out a small chuckle "Amy, you're a blob, I'm a skeleton and you were naked when I first met you... why are you embarrassed?"
"You..." Amy blushed and turned her head a little, "You can see...everything. I'm not a 'blob' in my suit."
Mort stared at somewhere in the distance, blushing invisibly. "Yeah but... there's nothing there is there?" he asked, not daring to look.
"Just acid." Amy replied, "But still....it's my same body if I had skin and flesh."
Mort nodded slowly "Ok.. I promise I wont peek." He took a couple of steps backwards slowly, not turning round to see where he was going so he could prove he wasn't peeking.
"Right. As if you didn't already." Amy smirked.
"Im a good boy!" Mort said defiantly, still walking backwards and not noticing he was heading straight for Amy "I swear I'd never-" he stopped suddenly with a jerk as he bumped against her. He hadn't been going fast but it caught him by surprise, making his head fall backwards and then everything went pink. He blinked a few times, spun around for a second and then yelled in surprise. He had falle into Amy's head.
Amy jerked back when she saw Mort's skull sink downwards, "What the hell?!"
Mort was muttering madly to himself as he tried to turn his body round to take his skull back out, saying "Im sorry Im sorry Im sorry" over and over again. He had just been taken back, he didn't want to scare her again.
"How the hell am I supposed to get you out of there?!" Amy asked
"I'll do it, Im sorry" Mort said, whimpering gently as he saw his body reaching out the wrong way. He slowly turned his body round, still holding his arm out.
Feeling a little bit embarrassed, Amy unzipped the upper half of her suit, revealing his skull in her chest.
Mort blushed gently and slowly forced himself to bob upwards until he floated inside her head. He cursed gently as he tried to control his body to take his skull out of her, it was difficult because every action he wanted was a mirror of what he needed.
It felt VERY strange to have him floating within her, but Amy reached forwards and grabbed Mort's hand. Slowly the guided it to her face, inserting his fingers slowly.
"Im sorry" Mort said as he took hold of his skull firmly and pulled himself free quickly but carefully, taking his skull back in his hands. He clicked it back in place, blushing brightly. But still... it had been nice to have skin again, even if it wasn't his.
The thick liquid jiggled and bounced back into place in her head. "Better?" Amy asked.
Mort blinked slightly and decided to edge around the question "Are you alright?"
Amy zipped her suit up quickly, forgetting she had taken it off.
Mort stood there in an embarrassed silence, staring off into the distance. usually when a boy is in the woods with his girlfriend and she's putting her clothes back on he hasn't just been inside her... well...
Amy regained herself, "I'm ok." She walked over and leaned in, looking to where he was, "Are you ok?"
"Im fine" Mort said as airily as he could, blushing in the way only Amy could see "I cant be hurt and all..."
Amy squinted a little, "I don't mean physically."
Mort blushed brighter, trying to hide from Amy's inquisative gaze "Im... good" he said truthfully.
"Then why won't you look at me?" Amy asked.
Mort turned around slowly, meeting her gaze and blushing brighter. "Im fine.." he said again "Im alright."
"What's wrong?" Amy asked again, not believing.
MOrt kicked the ground gently, then cursed as his front toe bones sunk into the ground. After pulling them back out with his powers he gazed at Amy, blushing still "Nothing's wrong... it's the opposite of that" he said.
"Umm...what is good?" Amy asked.
Mort sighed, she wasn't going to give up until he admitted it "Those couple of seconds there... when I fell into your body. I had skin again..." he blushed against stared at the floor "I know it's silly but I did..."
Amy blushed a little too, unsure of why. "ohh..." she muttered, not knowing what to say.
mort stared at the floor as well "Im sorry if it seemed.. weird" he said, wandering whether he had creeped her out.
"Isn't that like the 2nd time that happened?" Amy asked.
Mort nodded, though this time they were boyfreind and girlfreind and somehow it made him feel a little... dirty. "I should really try to keep myself together better." he said.
"That reminds me!" Amy said, pounding a fist into her hand, "I want to try and smear artificial nerves onto you."
Mort jumped and stared at her "You want to do what?" he said nervously. That sounded... strange.
Amy elaborated, "It's a possibility, but if they latch onto your bone....you might be able to feel." She stopped and elbowed him, "Dirty mind."
Mort shivered gently "I.. could feel?" he said. He ran a hand over his ribs slowly, listening to the small clonks and ticks. "Hmmm.. I dont know what that would be like" he admitted.
"I haven't started experimentation, but I have started to think about possible things that I could try...if your willing to be my assistant, as well as the test subject." Amy replied.
Mort smiled and nodded "Yes, I'd be happy to help." He poked her gently "But we fix you first." He put his trousers on quickly "Should we go try and test now?"
Amy latched arms, "Lead the way."
Mort smiled softly to her and began to walk threw to the mansion and into the entrance hall.
Just then the security alarm sounded threw the entire school. A telepathic mesasge from Emma followed All teachers report to the The War Room Immediatly Scott's voice sounded over the intercom "All students report to the recreation room and wait for instruction."
