The infirmary had been prepped and ready the moment Dr. McCoy had received word that the Blackbird was coming in with wounded. "Alright everyone, find a spot and have a seat, I will be with you all shortly." He laid the baby in a cart very similar to the ones used in pediatric wards for newborns and began to assess his patients. Threw the delicate art of Triage he deduced that Jayn needed the most attention, followed by the newcomer Tobias and then the baby, though the infant seemed perfectly healthy. Most everyone else had simple bumps and bruises (right?) and could manage to wait a few moments.
He set Jayn up in something that looked like an iron lung or a sensory deprivation tank, only his head remained the only part of him visable. After a few moments or rearranging equipment the idea was that the contraption would draw the moisture away from Jayn's skin and basically dehydrate him, allowing his skin to reach it's more normal temperature of around 125 and begin his healing process. After he had finished he let Jayn sleep and took Kari to the side to explain the situation.
"Within a few hours he should be as right as rain, for lack of a better analogy. The chemicals that where introduced to his skin act much like water when he comes in contact with it. He should experience the symptoms of a mild sunburn for a few days but other than that he should be perfectly fine. I would normally prescribe a simple aloe salve but that would only do him more harm than good."
"You ain't gonna tie me tot he bed are you? Cuz that's all they did back there...strapp
ed me down and let me heal myself. Please tell me you've got something better." Tobias asked the big blue doctor
"Thank you, Hank. I'll try to help if I can." Kari said, pondering ways to dry his skin up.
Iggy was thinking the same thing as Tobias was. If they did then it would prove that they are no better then the Genoshians. She watched the Doctor and made ready incase she had to act.
"The only people we strap down here are the ones who are actively trying to kill us" Tom said, looking around the infirmary for the stuff they used to set bones "If we did it to kids we'd lose our liscence as a school."
Hank smiled and patted Kari on the shoulder, addressing Tobias he wheeled a cart with supplies over towards his gurney "Oh we don't do that here." He said warmly, giving a glance at Tom that told him not to disturb his patients too much "This is a school, a facility where you guys can stay until your back on your feet." He didn't want to bring up the subject of parents but the matter would need to be rectified "Do any of you have parents who might be waiting for you?"
"I have a father who, according to the rather stern woman with the..." MOth pointed to her cheeks to indicate that she meant Del "Paint on her face? She said she saw him and that he wanted me to stay with your people until he found me."
Again Iggy stayed quite. She didn't know her parents, didn't know if they are alive or dead, mutant or non-mutant, or where they lived. All she has known her entire life is Genosha and slave labor.
"My parents are divorced and living in separate continents dude. I was going home to Dad's when I got stuck as a slave. That was months ago...I think they'd think I'm dead, not to mention recognizing me like this..." Tobias explained, clearly saying that he didn't appear as he does now when he left
"The lady's name is Del" Tom said, nodding to Moth before turning to Tobias "You didn't have this mutation when you were captured? Were you aware of your mutation when you were taken?"
Kari moved over to Tom and the young children, leaving Jayn to rest. "Goodness-" she muttered, hoping that the Genoshians didn't GIVE them these mutations.
"It's not unheard of." Hank said as he gave Tobias a thorough X-ray, "Genoshians will sometimes kidnap an entire school bus to get at only one mutant. They've never exactly needed conformation before
"Did they keep you guys in dog crates too?" Moth asked Iggy. Moth's wings had once looked decidedly more impressive, there where wrinkles and small dustless bare spots on them from being crammed in a dog crate for so long.
"I didn't say that." Tobias said in his own defense. "I simply said that they wouldn't recognize me like this. Let's just say that the feathers are rather new."
"Just checking" Tom said in their defense as well "Genosha tends to be populated with a lot of bad guys and only a few good guys. Who knows what they get up to down there."
"Seemed to me like your basic slave camp really. All work and no play for us. Building, digging, you name it." Tobias explained as he settled down on one of the examine beds.
"No, I was not so lucky to have a cover over my head." Iggy said in response to Moth's question. "Due to a lack of bedding most of the quarry miners had to sleep in the quarry itself. Some took to laying down right in there work stations so when they awoke they wouldn't have to walk to it."
"Why don't people do something about it?" Moth asked "Aren't they going against people's basic human rights?"
"Not when they don't consider us humans." Dr. McCoy said darkly "It's a very complicated situation from what I understand." Though what Hank couldn't understand was why, after over 20 years this mutant slavery problem hadn't been rectified.
"Well, you darlings can stay here as long as you want." Kari told the kids. She wasn't sure if it was said already, but she told them again anyway.
"And our basic jurisdiction as 'super heroes' lets us be the ones to sort it out. Pretty sure if we disappeared then they'd HAVE to sort it all out" Tom sighed, closing his eyes and checking people for internal hemorrhaging.
"There was talk between the other workers about some guy who was gonna kill 'em all for what they'd done to us." Tobias explained. "Mag...magnet or something like that? They said when he got there, they'd be free. But I'd been there for months and hadn't once seen anybody come to stop them, so maybe it's just some fantasy."
"Everyone I've seen try to stop them or stand up to them ended up dying under a barrage of bullets and getting flushed." Iggy said. "You guys are the first to make it out alive."
Kari glanced at Tom. They both knew whom Tobias was talking about. Dismissing the thought for the time being, she spoke to the kids, "Killing someone is never the right thing to do. Even when you think you have the right to take someone's life from them, you don't. No matter what the circumstances." Kari forced herself not to look at Tom. Clearing her throat, she smiled, "Anyway- I'm sure you kids are hungry, right? We have an 'all you can eat' cafeteria if you are interested. I'm sure the other students went to do the same. I can show you guys up to the rooms afterward." Kari was such a cute little hostess.
Tom coughed slightly and straightened his collar, he knew what Kari was hinting at... and he honestly didn't care for that right now. Kari had never had to kill someone on orders, in life or death circumstances that someone else didn't handle for her. Not everyone had powers that could get them out of trouble quite as easily as hers.
Hank was particularly quiet as he rearranged Tobias' splints and bandages into a more comfortable configuration. From the x-rays he concluded that he no longer needed splints for his leg, but he did prescribe a wheelchair to keep him off his feet. "Your bones are hollow but they heal remarkably quickly. You said the cave-in happened earlier today, within the recent 4 hours?"
Speaking of people killing other people Del appeared in the doorway. She Kari and Tom had had an issue or two about bloodshed in front of the students, but right now there was a more pressing matter. "Kari, I'm sure Sue's roots are showing by now, what say we go get the kids?
"Oh yes." Kari glanced over at Del. Before walking over to look at the students, she pointed over her shoulder at Tom, "He'll take you to the lunch room instead. It was nice meeting you." she smiled and waved at them before heading over to Del. She looked at Jayn on the other end of the room, figuring it best to not wake him.
Tobias scratched his head and looked at Iggy. "It's only been 4 hours? But yeah, it happened earlier today." He told Hank with a confused nod.
"I wouldn't consider it abnormal." Hank said reassuringly "Advanced healing comes in quite handy from time to time. Especially around here."
"Seriously? You guys get pummeled by rock slides often?" Tobias asked him rather incredulously. "Cuz I dunno if I'd wanna stick around here if that were the case." He tilted his head tot he side, "You know, I've seen alot of different people lately, but what's with the blue?"
"We have a dangerous line of work, sometimes it follows us home" Tom sighed, shrugging slightly at Tobias "We were lucky enough to have a healer on our team years back. Came in real handy. You don't have to stay around here if you don't want to though."
"It's a pigmentation variation favored my the mutant gene." Hank explained "I used to not look like this though." He looked in his wallet and pulled out a faded wrinkled picture of a man and a woman on a hillside. The man looked muscular but relatively normal with glasses and a smart haircut.
"Spiffy." Tobias told him as he looked at the picture
"So is everyone set up?" Tom inquired, wondering if everyone was done healing and being bandaged. He didn't want to stand around in here all day after all.
Hank gave everyone a quick once over again and told Tom "Everyone looks well enough." He picked Tobias up and placed him gently in the wheelchair "Who would you like to be your navigator?" He asked "You don't want to work that collarbone too much."
"Iggy?" Tobias asked her calmly. He didn't want to leave his friend down here alone and he didn't know anyone else nearly as much. He trusted her.
Iggy looked down at Tobias and forced a smile. "I can do that for you." she said as she gripped the handles on the wheelchair.
"Alright, good" Tom said, nodding slightly at the group "Lets go upstairs shall we? Don't want to keep you guys hungry." Walking firmly, but slowly enough that a weakened person pushing a wheel chair could keep up, he lead them towards the main dining hall.
"So..." Will said rubbing his palms on his pants as he approached Hank "How's the baby?"
Hank rubbed his hands together and smiled. "Well considering the circumstances and what little I know about how he came to be? Remarkably well, if I do say so myself. He's an outstanding little one. I can only imagine what he will be able to do."
"I don't remember a lot about about the process but i remember them saying that there had been a few failed attempts." Will said concerned "He's not going to liquefy or spontaneously combust is he?"
"I am far from an expert in the field of cloning, William. But I would say that should he show signs of genetic decay, it would take place sooner rather than later." Hank offered with as much sincerity as he could muster. "But again, for all that I know, he may be a perfect clone and not be subject to decay at all. He may live out his days in perfect health. Only time will tell."
"Can't you do some tests to make sure?" Will asked. It was quite obvious that he was concerned about the little guy.
"I do believe I just stated that no I cannot. I am not an expert in the field of genetic cloning, William." Hank explained further. "I do not have the knowledge, nor the equipment to run such a test. From what I can tell however, is that he appears perfectly fine. As if he was not a clone at all. Which means that he could very well live the full extent of life as we know it."
"No offense Hank," Will told him "But what about Dr. McTaggart? Do you think she would be able to run those sorts of tests?"
"Cloning isn't exactly her field of expertise either, but her facilities are much better equipped to run tests of all natures." Hank explained with a shrug. "You'd have to ask her really though."
"I think I might do that." Will said "No offense or anything... The little guy needs..." Will was about to say something about a decent chance at a life but it occurred to him that "He doesn't even have a name..."
"Well, then i do believe what he needs is a name. At the very least." Hank told him with a gentle smile. "I take no offense to you searching for a second opinion. I just hope you find one."
Will looked at the boy and said the only thing that came to mind "How about we call him Junior for now? I'll see what Lyra and Jayn think, after he wakes up. Maybe they'll think of something more appropriate."
"Junior sounds quite appropriate." Hank agreed with a smile. He quickly jotted it down on the boy's chart, but used pencil in case they decided to change it.
"I suppose I should go and pilfer some hand-me-downs from Del and Kari." Will said to himself "When will he be able to leave the infirmary?"
"I just have to run a few more checks on him and he'll be ready to go." Hank told him with a smile
"Call me when your done." Will told hank and after looking on little 'Junior' once more he left to locate what the little guy was going to need in the immediate future.
Some time later Jayn began to stir a bit. The machine Hank had him in was doing a wonderful job of drying him out but he was still sore from the extinguisher's initial blast. For being as hot blooded as he is being hit by the extinguisher was like being hit by a flame thrower to a normal person. "Kari?" he muttered in his half conscious state.
Hank looked up from the desk with a start, it appeared that he had fallen asleep while working. "Oh! Good morning Jayn. I'm afraid Kari isn't here right now."
"What happened?" Jayn asked, he remembered being kidnapped and held in Genoshia but everything was a bit of a blur.
"You were liberated from Genoshia by your fellow X-men. It appears they took you and your siblings for the sole purpose of creating a clone of all your DNA." Hank informed him without taking a single breath.
"A clone?" Jayn asked "Did they succeed? Was it destroyed?"
"You could say that they did succeed. We do not know what their intentions were for the child, so whether or not they succeeded is another matter." Hank explained and turned to him, "Did you want him destroyed?"
"A child?" all of Jayn's thoughts were blurring together "It's not some weird mutated thing like in Evil Dead 2??"
"Not any more strangely mutated than the rest of us, Jayn." Hank told him rather sternly, not liking where the young boy's thoughts were leading
"Well that's good." Jayn said, his eyes settling on the distorted reflection of himself in the ceiling tiles. "If he's here then that means we're one up on Genoshia... the bastards."
"I suppose you could look at it that way. We're also alive. Most of the Genoshians appear to have been slaughtered in a multiple of ways." Hank explained, having gotten his hands on some of the video feed.
"They'll be back, they always are." Jayn was quiet for a few moments after that but was forced to ask "How long do i have to stay in this thing?" He was indication the iron lung-looking device Hank had placed him in. He was no stranger to being dehydrated but he'd never gotten soaked this badly before.
"Not much longer I suppose. You seem almost up to par." Hank told him as he studied the current readout from the machine. "Really now, do you find my company to be that distressing that you wish to leave as soon as becoming conscious?"
"I get stir-crazy when I'm stuck in one place." Jayn said "Besides, your no where near as pretty as Kari. Given the choice of looking at her or your ugly mug, I'd choose her any day." He was smiling of course, Jayn had always been quite fond of Hank.
"You know, Jayn my boy, it's not very smart to agitate your doctor." Hank told him with a grin.
Jayn laughed at that and the action sent a sharp pain threw him somewhere and he was forced to say "Please, don't make me... laugh."
"Well then, I do suppose that means you need some more recuperation time." Hank explained with a tick in his voice.
"Can I see the kid first?" Jayn asked "Then I'll go back to sleep and leave you alone."
"Can you stand?" Hank asked him, arching an eyebrow skeptically.
"I can try." Jayn told him "If you can let me out of this iron lung."
"Fair enough I suppose." Hank replied and shuffled over to him. He tapped a few keys on the keyboard and there was a loud HISS as the containment was breached and Jayn was released from the device.
Jayn tried to lean up as soon as the lid slid away, he immediately regretted the sudden movement and laid back down with a hiss of his own. "I may need your help Hank."
"I do believe I told you that you weren't ready to get out yet." Hank pointed out as he moved to help the young man get to his feet. "I could have brought the child over here, but you never asked."
"I'm gonna go nuts if I stay in there much longer." Jayn's skin was a slightly unhealthy red, sort of akin to a sunburn and he hissed when hank's big furry hand touched him.
"Whatever you say...don't say the doctor didn't warn you though." Hank explained as he helped him over to the child
Jayn shuffled his feet until the room stopped spinning. His body felt extremely heavy but his legs manages to stay under him. "Awe hey little guy." Jayn said leaning over the infant. "Woah buddy, boy he's red... Why do you think that happened? None of us are red..."
"True, but the gene for color shifting is obviously in your genes. William is quite gray and Lyra has such a lovely shade of blue to her as well as being able to shift to blend in with her surroundings. Perhaps the red actually comes from your part of the gene pool. Red is most commonly associated with heat or fire." Hank deduced, scratching his chin in thought. "Perhaps one day you might turn red yourself? My that would be interesting..."
"I hope not." Jayn told Hank "I think I'd prefer orange." He tapped plastic wall of the child's incubator and smiled "Your gonna have to beat the ladies off with a stick aren't you buddy? yes you are, yes you are!"
"You think his color's nice?" Hank asked, chuckling softly and slipping a pair of rubber gloves onto his hands. He reached into the incubator and undid the little red infant's diaper, pulling it down. "Take a look at what he's packing."
Jayn was quiet for a moment then looked at Hank and back to the boy "He doesn't take after Will that's for damn sure."
"Well now, speaking as your doctor, I can certainly tell you he doesn't get that from you either Jayn." Hank told him with a great chuckle
Jayn was almost offended but when he realized big blue and furry had actually made a joke, at his expense no less, he roared with laughter. Immediately regretting it pain rippled across his skin. He was no longer bald now though. A low lazy flicker of blue flames rolled across his pale scalp, similar to the effect of flames caused by lighter fluid and how they die rapidly as they consume the liquid.
Footsteps could be heard from the hallway, then there was a light knock, "Dr. McCoy?" Kari asked sweetly from the other side.
"Yes?" Hank responded tot he gentle voice calling his name. He was glad to see that Jayn was feeling good enough to light a fire, no matter how small.
"I know that voice!" Jayn said excitedly and his hair jumped an inch or two. He shuffled as quickly as he could towards the door to greet his family.
Hank shook his head softly as Jayn shuffled to the door. The boy's backside shine nearly as bright as his head. Should he point out the fact he was in a hospital gown? Nah!
Kari turned the knob and opened the door slowly, "Oh!" She perked, surprised to by greeted by her husband. "Well I wasn't expecting you to be up so soon." Her back was bent as she held onto the twin's little hands. Kari leaned forward and gave Jayn a sweet kiss on the lips. Glancing down at her little ones, she asked, "Didn't you two have something to show Daddy?"
The twins each held up a folded piece of paper with colorful scribbles on it.
"Dah-" one twin started.
"-Dee!" finished the other.
Kari's eyes lit up and she looked at Jayn with an open mouth. The twins had finally said their first word! Oddly though...they split it.
Jayn leaned over to see the picture when he felt a cold draft overtake his bottom. He shuffled so his backside faced the wall and knelt a bit to greet his boys "Awe that's great!" he told them "Look how talented our boys are Kari! You did such a great job!" He wanted to scoop them up and hold them close but he was still far too sensitive. Kari's kiss still tingled on his lips.
"That's right boys!" Kari said in her cheery way, leaning down and rustling her hand in their hair. "That's Daddy!" She looked at Jayn, "I guess making the get well cards was a good idea, you're already walking around."
"You know me, I can't stay still for long." Jayn told her. "but I'd better sit down before I fall down." He headed for the nearest bed and tried to hold his gown closed as he eased onto the edge. "Hank thinks I'll be right as rain in a few days."
"Wonderful!" Kari smiled, clasping her hands together. She leaned down and grabbed the boys' cards and set them up on the window sill. "I proposed having a shish-cabob party for the new students to Delaney and William. "If you can't make it, I'll be sure to bring some down."
"I can't wait. I'm starving." Jayn said leaning back on the bed and slowly swinging his legs up so he could lay down.
"I'll be sure to bring you some clothes too." Kari said with a grin, "Unless you like the breeze?"
Jayn snickered and readjusted his gown "Har har." His pillows weren't working for him so he asked his loving wife "Honey, could you?".
Kari was more then happy to help. She stepped forward and placed her hands on his pillows and briskly fluffed them. "There- how is that? I can grab you one from the bedroom if that would be better for you."
"Nah, this is fine." Jayn said reclining "I really do love you." He said honestly "I can't imagine what would have happened if you guys hadn't come gotten us."
"Then let's not imagine it." Kari said, placing a soft hand on his cheek.
"I won't." Jayn said relishing the sensation of the warmth of his skin. "Did you get a look at the littles arival?"
"Indeed, I have. They seem like a nice bunch actually. Oddly though- each one seems to have an animal releated mutation. Either its an odd coincidence or maybe Genocia has a part in it."
"No, I mean the baby." Jayn said pointing at the incubator across the room.
"Oh! Right, of course!" Kari looked over at the infant, then to Jayn, "Isn't he adorable?" she wasn't sure if he knew that the baby was Will's or not.
"Has anyone mentioned the thought of raising him yet?"M Jayn asked "I know we have two already but what's one more? The little guy is gona need parents."
Kari smiled at how honestly sweet and kind Jayn was just now. "Although that would be wonderful, I think we would better as Aunt and Uncle." She clasped her hands together excitedly, "Sorry, your brother has already claimed him."
"Will? Really?" Jayn asked. He wasn't exactly surprised now that he thought about it. Will was getting on in years. Thirty might be the new twenty but for a guy who could never hold onto a girl, he must be feeling pretty lonely. "Well that's good and we'll be around to make sure he doesn't screw anything up."
"Yea, like not to leave the syrup bottle on the carpet." Kari reminded with a light chuckle.
"I thought we agreed you'd stop bring that up." Jayn said with a smile.
Kari lifted her shoulders, as if to say 'oops'. The twins had hobbled to their father's bedside and gripped onto the bars on the side. They both whined and pulled at the bed, wanting to go up onto it.
"They can come up but they can't touch me." Jayn told her "Daddy's skin is still too sensitive buds."
Kari picked the two up at once and set them on the bed, by Jayn's knees. "Careful.." she told them, being sure that they didn't try to swat at him.
Jayn tossed the boys hair and said "I'm so glad to see you guys."
Kari brought up a chair next to the bed and watched, glad their little family was reunited again. "You worried me sick, you know."
"Wasn't my idea doll." Jayn said, his hands wandering over the boy's features. marveling at how perfect his boys where.
"Dah-"
"-Dee!" they twins chimed.
Kari smirked at the twins and looked at Jayn, "Well don't do it again." she said seriously.
"I'll try not to." Jayn told her, all the while his face was lit up like Christmas at hearing his boys call him daddy.
"How is my little man?" Will asked entering the infirmary. he'd only been gone about an hour but he couldn't wait to see what was up.
"I'm fine, thank's for asking." Jayn told his brother, glad to see that he was virticle and well.
"Not you ya sod, the baby!" Will said hedding straight for the incubator and peering in to make sure the little guy was steel doing well. "How is he Hank?"
"Love you too bro." Jayn said sarcastically and returned his attention to the boys.
"He's doing as well as he was when you left earlier Will." Hank told him. In truth, therre had been no change in the boy's present state at all. He was still very much alive despite everything that he Genoshians had done.
"You know- the poor guy might be getting hungry soon. I am out of formula and I'm not too certain that Del would have anymore either. Maybe the kitchen has some? Either way, tomorrow we should go shopping for the little lad." Kari was obviously excited for William.
"Del, formula?" Jayn scoffed "Yeah right. She probably turns into a cow and Kurt milks her every morning. I don't see her giving Waya anything other than the real thing."
"Thanks for that wonderful image Jayn." Will said shaking his head and pinching the bridge of his nose. He thought over the prospect of shopping "Your going to have to help me with that. I've no idea really where to start. On my way down here I was debating on whether signing him up for the Gerber Grow Up plan or just set up a college fund and the little guy isn't even a day old yet."
"Of course!" Kari smiled brightly. "We do have a lot of boy clothes- two of most of it. But there are definitely things that we need to buy. Diapers being the big one."
Will nodded, thinking that he should probably make a list or something. He looked a bit tired and defiantly worried as he looked upon the face of his new "son".
"Have you spoken to Lyra yet?" Jayn asked "Maybe she should take the kid. She is a girl after all..."
"I've not seen her since we arrived." Will said "But he's my responsibility. If I'd not led the Genocians here they never would have gotten all three of us and this guy wouldn't' be here now."
Kari looked oddly at Jayn, "What does being a girl have anything to do with it?" Will had been single for a long time now as well. Not to mention, he was much older then Lyra. Kari figured that the likelihood of her having a child was much higher then William.
"You remember why she and Jerry divorced right?" Jayn asked Kari "Jerry didn't want to raise a mutant kid."
"Don't make it sound so crass Jayn." William said wheeling his new "son" in their direction and taking a seat so he could converse and watch him. "They learned that their probability of having a mutant child was 78%. Jerry rationalized that until the state of the world was more orderly he could not rationally bring a mutant child into this world."
"A wise decision, but most regrettable I would dare say." Hank deduced as he worked on some other projects he had running.
"Such a shame. It really shouldn't matter if the child's cells mutate." Kari frowned, rubbing the back of her arm. "But- I suppose it's hard to think otherwise when someone looks at the hardships mutants have to go through."
"Well he was 'sapien." Jayn said. His hair was a bit brighter and his complexion less wan. "I don't know what she saw in him."
"I suppose what she saw in Tom once upon a time." Will said quietly and then directed a question at Hank "Is he feeding intravenously or should I prepare a bottle for him?"
"He should be able to handle a bottle. It appears as if they only aged him a little bit. Perhaps the rescue attempt halted further aging attempts upon him. He certainly should be capable of bottle feeding." Hank pointed out, beginning to piece together why the Genoshians may have had complications with previous cloning attempts.
"Right..." Will said having no idea where to begin. His eyes immediately drifted to Kari, a look of help? fixed to his face. He felt overwhelmed even at the thought of having to prep a bottle.
"Come on Will, you've fed the boys a thousand times." Jayn said, leaning up in his bed. "You can't tell us you don;t know what to do?"
"fed yes, prepared a bottle? No." Will said flatly. In fact every time he'd ever fed his nephews someone had handed him the bottles pre-made.
"Don't be so harsh." Kari said, looking at Jayn for s moment. "Perhaps Delaney has some formula that you can have."
"I'm so daft." Will said and went to the door where he'd sat his bag when he came in. "I've been toting it about and haven't even looked yet." The bag was full of unisex clothes, a wad of diapers, bottles, a pacifier and... yep, one container of formula. All of which he emptied out on the foot of Jayn's bed. Seeing that he had at least the makings of a starter kit the nervous ball in the pit of his stomach began to unwind and he began reading the directions on the container.
Kari placed a delicate hand on her collar bone as she watched William. It was so nice to see him so excited and nervous. Kari had always thought it sad that Will was always by himself.
"Four scoops?" Will asked looking at Kari. "For an 8 oz bottle?" He held up the bottle and looked over the label again. "It seems like a bit much don't you think?"
"Don't worry, that's what it's supposed to be." Kari advised with a smile. Seeing the items scatter on the bed, the twins crawled towards William, curious as to what was going on.
"Yeah you lads know what this is don't you?" Will said popping the top off the container. A little puff of white dust came out at him, causing him to sneeze. When the formula cleared the boys where covered in a thin layer of baby formula. "Pardon..."
Kari giggled, "Goodness!" The twins looked at one another and started to laugh at how the other looked. This of course was followed by cute, little sneezes.
Jayn laughed and then twinged from the pain. "Don't make me laugh!" He wheezed, trying to compose himself.<hr.
Will waved his hand, trying to clear the rest of the formula. He was laughing but said "I don't think I'm cut out for this.'
"I don't think anyone is 'cut out' for raising a child." Kari comforted. "It's just something that will come naturally as you go. Trust me- you should've seen him after week 1." She cocked her head back to Jayn.
"Yeah but I never left the egg in the car." Jayn said raising his brow at his loving wife.
Will managed to brush most of the powder off himself and the boys. He was sure Hank would have something to clean it up but for now he managed to get most of the four scoops into the bottle.
"One time!" Kari defended quickly, as if she had done it several times previously.
Ignoring their dispute Will looked to Kari "Aren't I supposed to boil water or something?"
"Oh no, just warm water will do." Kari corrected, sitting on the edge of the bed. "Test it beforehand to make sure that it doesn't burn his mouth though."
"Right..." Will moved away rom the bed to fill the bottle.
"He's cute isn't he?" Jayn said wiping formula powder from the boy's eyelashes. "All pent up and nervous. You'd think the kid where actually his."
"Well- it sort of is, isn't it? A third his actually." Kari lowered her voice, "But it's so exciting to see that he won't have to always be alone anymore."
"Might be saying too much but i always got the impression he was waiting for someone." Jayn looked at kari, knowing she would know who he meant
Kari smile faded a bit. They really were a cute couple for a long time. "Either way, I think this child is a good thing for him."
Jayn agreed but didn't say anything now that Will was headding back in their direction.
"Does this look right>" Will asked handing Kari the bottle of white liquid.
Kari took the bottle and shook it up and down. Putting a bead on her wrist, she nodded, "Perfect." and handed the bottle back to him.
Del arrived a moment later, her eyes seeking out Kari. She smiled at seeing swill with the bottle in his hands and then wider still when she saw that he and the boys had been dusted with baby formula. "Been practicing for dad-hood I see."
Will smiled as he lifted the baby from the incubator and cradeled him in his arms. "I don't know how you lasses do it." He said taking the bottle from Kari.
"Instinct." Was all Del said and then added "Duh."
"Well- if that doesn't work, you can always buy some "Parenting: How to" magazines?" Kari suggested.
Will rolled his eyes at del and placed the niple of the bottle against the boy's lips. INstinctively the child's lips snapped open and quickly geeling what meant food clamped his lips down on the bottle and began to nurse. "I'm doing it!" He said with suprise "It worked!"
"Of course it did." Del told him "I had those nippels cast for Waya." but she didn't say what they'd been cast from.
"Are you telling us that those are..." Jayn started slowly but didn;t finish.
Kari placed a hand on her mouth, "Oh my...." she said softly, staring at the bottle.
"Waya won't have an overbite though." Del said in her own defense. "She should have perfect teeth when they come in."
"I...suppose so." Kari didn't know what else to say.
"You act like im the only one to have it done." Del said
"Alright alright!" Kari waved a hand defensively. "It's a very caring idea. Definitely better then the store ones."
"Yeah that's what I told Kurt when he said it was weird too." Del said crossing her arms and leaning against the wall. She decided to change the subject. "How's it going Will?"
"Fine just fine." Will said, he had a stupid grin on his face that could be considered awe. The little guy was nursing like a champ and his little black and red eyes darted about the shiny room, taking in this small part of his new home. "He really needs a name."
"Did you not pick one out yet?" Kari asked, seizing a twin from pulling at the other's hair.
"Junior for now." Will said. "I wanted a word with Lyra before I decided."
"So you can name him after someone in the family?" Jayn asked "That's fine by me so long as you don't pick something like Alister or Bernard."
"I had an uncle named Bernard." Del said looking flatly at Jayn. That uncle hadn't been a mutant, or really an actual uncle, but he'd always been aware of the family secret. "It's a good name."
"Not for your grandmother though." Will said taking the bottle away so he could burp the baby. "It's a long story."
Kari paused. "Oh! So his name is William then, right? Is that not ho it works? If he is a junior, he is a Will jr?"
"I don't know that William suits him." Will said holding the boy in front of him in time to get a nice boastful burp to the face. After fanning it away he said "Maybe he's a Bill?"
"Oh no, not Bill." Jayn said and deliberately shivered. "Remember that bloke who used to sell stolen clothes over in White CHapple?"
"Oh, you are right." Will said looking at his boy as if the name Bill would definatly not do. "Samuel?"
"Good name for a werewolf." Del said absently.
"If I may- what was your father's name again?" Kari asked curiously. Perhaps it would fit?
