13 Nov - Day 7. Utrecht, Culemborg

When the lack of inspiration strike concerning the next place to visit, you just go random... Well, so was the plan on that day. We had considered going to Amsterdam and visit some museums, but as I was to leave for England by the ferry next to Newcastle the next day from Ijmuiden, right next to Amsterdam. We would visit Amsterdam, just not today.

So we took the car and drove at random, to discover the wonders of the Dutch countryside. The first stop happened in... Utrecht. Yes, we'd been here before, but we saw a few new things we hadn't seen before, or things we wanted to take a picture of but hadn't had the time or correct lighting last time we'd been there. So we looked for a parking spot nearby, taking on the way pictures of the riverside.

Nice and peaceful looking area

Once the car parked we walked around to explore the neighbourhood. We came across a giant leg-like sculpture just in front of the justice court. That building has and entrance built in modern style, all glass and metal, but you guess it's just a trick to hide the older-looking traditionnal buildings just behind. Throught the top of the structure, you can actually still see them...

The giant foot and the old court behind a glassy wall

Some more walking lead us to an enormous massive building that was in fact the railway headquarters or something.

Massive building. Its block-like features make it interesting

On top of it, There is something looking like a giant flying saucer.

The flying saucer... O_o... No, it's not a street lamp, it's actually on top of the building!

Farther away, a church...

Again, blocky and massive architecture. It does give an impressive look

Looks like [LegendofJelda] stepped into the shot ;)

Then we took the car again, and eventually got out of the town. General direction: South.

Flat country, uh ?

After a bit of driving around, we ended up in Culemborg, in the countryside. We passed some more windmills on the way, but the modern ones.

Modern windmills. I still like them ^_^

And later, onced the car parked in Culemborg, we found a more traditional-looking one. It sure is the truth when people say the Netherlands are the country of windmills!

That's a good looking windmill!
