In addition to the resolution CGT - Resolution the other major contributor to image size CGT - Image Size is Color Depth. This is the amount of information that is stored in the file about the number of different colors that can be recognized by the file format CGT - File Format. The more colors the format supports the larger the file will tend to be.

Not all raster formats are created equal and the one you choose can have an impact on how useful the image will be. Not only does the format dictate the way the data is stored, but also how representitive the file will be of the original appearance of the work. Some file formats are better than others for a purpose, but there is no perfect format. You should select one of the formats that will preserve the most image data possible for your raw data, which will usually mean a larger file size, and then change the format of a copy later to make it lighter weight and faster loading. Always preserve a file with the highest color depth and resolution you can imagine using for the particular image and save an archival copy for reference. Once an image file is scaled down or the color depth mode is reduced any data lost in the conversion is lost permenantly.
