Centaur
A centaur is a creature that is half human (from the waist up) and half horse (from the neck down). Differing subraces of this type often have specific traits, such as color, proportion, and distinctive facial or bodily characteristics that are unique to the individual or herd (clan of several families)
Centaur - live primarily on plains or lightly wooded areas. A mostly nomadic people with a strict social hierarchy called, and based upon equine herds. The herd is lead by the lead male, stallion, but also comprised of weaker, lower ranking stallions. The females, mares, also have a strict hierarchy with a leading female. Religion is mostly nature oriented, but may change between individual herds. Though primarily huntsmen, or ranger types, they also have a rich culture of crafts and knowledge gathering, also individual and varying between herds. Centaurs are omnivorous, very social, but mildly xenophobic.

2006-04-01 [xido]: Would Driders be considered a tauric race, you think? Drider, part of drow underling, outcast society... ?

2007-03-05 [Torr-maat]: no Driders are not Tauric

2007-03-28 [xido]: okay. So Elfin Clan or Minor Clans for them, then... ;)

The Senmurv would probably be better suited to the Gryphon Clan or Minor Clans than the Tauric Clan, too.

2008-04-06 [Linn Scarlett]: Tauric creatures usually define -all- those creatures which are composed of the torso of a humanoid and the lower body of a quadruped. So a dog with a human torso on it, would be a Tauric, but so would be a cat or a lion or a goat with an elf torso. The list goes on. The problem here with drider is that spiders aren't actually quadrupid. Rather they are double quadrupid or centipides, whatever you want to call it. But driders do have the head of the spider replaced by a drow torso. And that would make them Tauric.
So the best way, if you want, to define Taurics by a good rule is to actually say that a Tauric creature is any creature with a humanoid head and torso on the location of a non-biped's head. That would make Lamia Tauric, Drider Tauric, but Minotaurs not! Nor Satyrs.

2008-04-06 [Linn Scarlett]: Centaurs fall in my category of cuddlable-pets, so mind me for butting in here ;)

2008-04-06 [Linn Scarlett]: Also Xido, with 'tribe/clan' do you mean 'racial group' or an actual 'tribe' in the meaning of a community? Seeing as Lamia, Centaur etc are racial groups and not really tribes. Tribes would be like... the Skyguard Tellin (centaur tribe in my story) and their rivals the Veldrin'ktor (another centaur tribe) or the Xendalar (lamia group).

2008-04-24 [xido]: No problem Linn. ;)

So, you - being the local drow expert - would consider drider a non-tauric because of its non-4-legs nature and this ruling, or would you say that they are part of this group, but that minotaur would not be? In this latter case, minotaurs would then simply be Monstrous Humanoids, as stated in D&D's 3.5 setup... That would also remove the Fiend Folio's Senmurv (the rainbow bird-wolf) from this list...

But for the case of the Tauric Clan, I am instating [Torr-maat] as lead position, since he feels it is necessary, and I agree.

We could simply find some way to make it seem that the word 'taur-' is simply a way of saying half&half... If such an idea is possible...

Where are you seeing tribe/clan used that you need defined? For the Elftown Clans, they are groups of races, and for Lyonia's mention for WFR Tauric Races, the same idea, since the clans are all part of a greater kingdom of taurians.

2008-04-24 [Linn Scarlett]: I would consider them taurics *awaits hateful crowds of drow lovers who think driders are special because they are 'cursed' to be how they are, which they are not. As centaurs were a cursed people themselves. So, bleh*

Minotaurs fall in my Humanoid category in my own work. Humanoid being everything with a composition that is recognizable as Human in baseline and is not an outer-plane-resident. So Drow and other Elves, Minotaurs, Satyrs, all Humanoids. Don't know what you use though.

May I but in that centaur comes from the greek Kéntauroi which is related to Kéltoi (greek for the Celts). Kéltoi means something like outsider and is not a word for a people as it is *awaits angry celt fans as well now* other than the LaTéne culture we (archaeologists/historics) have no fluffing idea if they even existed. Anyhow, to get back to my point, Kéntauroi has 'tau' fluffed in there. Some say from taur(bull/ox) and others say from tauroi (fourlegged/animal).
So... yeah :3 I am a fan of the latter theory, so you wouldn't have to change the meaning as the use of 'tauric' creatures, would already imply that they are like centaurs: quadrupeds half human

2008-04-24 [Linn Scarlett]: The little 'flaw' you seem to be making in this page is th difference between Antros and Taurs. Anthros is basically anything animal shaped -exactly- like human: standing up right, two arms, two legs, animal head you name it. Taurs I just explained, quadrupid-meets-human-torso. Minotaurs would seem Antro, but I really only try to use the word for those creatures that were created as animals acting as humans. And not just any Humanoid. But I suppose you'd have to draw that line for yourself.

Other than that, I find the word clan not the best choice of words for this project. But you already know :3 I think in clans of highlanders and barbarians, not in clans of races.

2008-04-24 [Linn Scarlett]: Oh and for the sake of random cuteness <img:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8c/Oreius.png>
I can't help it, I positively adore him ^_^ *whistles while conveniently hiding her poster of the Narnia centaur general from sight*

2008-08-11 [xido]: True. ;) Added this pic to Centaur.

2008-09-01 [Linn Scarlett]: Geh well yeah. Oh and I am back in town for lectures the coming three weeks, just so you know. :)
EDIT: I was bored so I tinkered on the Centaur page, if you don't mind. Got some better shots of some of the cuties as well ;)
