Desert Island Discs

This is simply an Elftown version of an old idea:

"If you were ever stranded on a deserted island and could only bring up to ten of your favorite albums, which would they be---and why?"

Please share your favorite albums with us, and briefly tell us why you think they are so good. Any genres are fine, but I'd strongly recommend avoiding greatest-hits compilations and cheesy Time-Life collections. Soundtracks of any kind are fine, but remember that movies like "Forrest Gump" have soundtracks that feature songs that have been on a bunch of other period-piece movies. In other words, "Imagine" by John Lennon is only really a good choice if you skip the gazillion soundtracks it's been on. Instead, simply consider the original 1971 Imagine John Lennon album. Just a suggestion. Also, concert bootlegs are fine.

*****Almost certainly---pending Elftowners' interest---album lists will be moved to subwikis, with this page merely serving as a portal to those links.*****

[Paul Doyle] - moved to Pauly's Desert Island Discs to free up a lot of space.

[Lerune] - in order of importance, even! Though, I can think of things I'd rather take than CD's, since the question pertains to them and only them, here goes:

1. Advent Children OST - My favorite song in all of the known world is on this CD: the FFVII World Theme. I could listen to this soundtrack FOREVER and never get tired of it.

2. Sarah Brightman, Symphony - Because, even if it isn't my all-time favorite of her albums (Eden actually is) filled with beautiful music, rock-themed symphonies and fantastic duets.

3. Alessandro Safina, Sognami - Because I do, indeed, dream of him. XD

4. Linkin park, Minutes to Midnight - Because there isn't a song on the album that I don't like, which is rare. Vastly superior to Hybrid Theory which I also loved.

5. Staind, Break the Cycle - Because I couldn't live long without the song, Epiphany.

6. Tool, Aenima - I will NEVER stop loving this band, and even though picking only one of their albums would be hard, I could live with this one indefinitely.

7. Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral - Because. it. Just. ROCKS. And I could listen to it as loudly as I wanted for a change.

8. Evanescence, Open Door - Because as much as I hate to admit it, Snow White Queen and All That I'm Living For just make me rock out when I hear them. Her lyrics, kinda like Aaron Lewis from Staind just speak to me.

9. Maroon 5, It Won't Be Soon Before Long - Because...I just love them. I can't even explain why. He's so Phill Collins-esque to me, I love his vocals.

10. Jason Mraz, anything - Because, he's a guy with a guitar, and his music makes me feel good. :D

[twitchboy]- i only need three

1. Alan Jacksons fiv o'clock somewhere- to pass the time and stay in the island mood.

2. Linkin parks minutes to midnight- Simply because i love the band and their songs, even if this one was way more emo than reanimation, meteora, and hybrid theory

3. How to build a boat, book on cd as voice by alec baldwin

[wicked fae mage]

1.I'd go with System of a Down (any of the five albums) since I love all of their songs and feel better aboout being weird.

2.Slipknot (again any album)since I love Corey's voice.

3.Metallica since I have a weird desire to listen to Death Magnetic.

4.If there were a composed CD of Beethoven I'd listen to the three movements of Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, his fifth, his ninth and his unfinished symphony repetitively since they are soothing.

5.Rammstein's Rosenrot since I like my German metal for some reason.

6.Flogging Molly's Far From Home since I love Seven Deadly Sins.

7.Poison's Greatest hits from 86-96 since they're my favorite Poison songs anyway.

2008-11-12 [Lerune]: EMO? Minutes to Midnight? I have to disagree, mainly because I hate that label and the fact that any music with any kind of poetic lyric is labeled with it prior to properly looking at whether or not it is deserving of it. =oP Musically, M2M was fantastic -- showed that they had much more talent than they settled for on their previous albums. I wouldn't refer to ANY of their music as EMO, and I'd have to say it is even less so than Hybrid Theory. =oP

2008-11-12 [twitchboy]: their songs are amazing dont get me wrong they are my favorite band, but when the songs talk about burying your loved one on a valentines day, remembering you for the good things when your gone, and cutting....yeah thats a bit depressed and emo

2008-11-12 [Lerune]: EMO music originated as a sub-genre of hardcore punk, Linkin Park is nu metal/rap rock. Just because a song mentions something more profound than "dropping it like it's hot" doesn't mean it's EMO. =oP If that's the case, then ALL country artists are EMO. XD

By that logic, you could argue that Nine Inch Nails is EMO and that's just absurd. XD

2008-11-12 [twitchboy]: i know its called nu rock, and by that logic yes the song is emo(short for emotional)

2008-11-13 [Lerune]: I suppose I can agree that the song is "emotional" because it is. The song "Crawling" is also a very emotional song, and one I happen to like very, very much. However, the term "EMO" is a complete and total stereotype that means absolutely nothing like it was intended when the word was first used. Now, it's just a generic label tossed on any band that performs a song that resembles a ballad. Linkin Park is really nothing like Rites of Spring, which is credited as the first "emo" band.

I'm wondering why no really labels Staind as "emo" because Aaron Lewis's lyrics are certainly very emotional and oftentimes tell very painful tales. ;)

2008-11-13 [twitchboy]: emo is a widely missused term

2008-11-13 [Lerune]: It is. ^^ Which is really irritating to most people -- hell, most bands that are labeled as "emo" even hate the term. XD

2008-11-13 [Paul Doyle]: Emo was fine --- until it went mainstream :P

2008-11-13 [Paul Doyle]: I moved my choices to a sub-wiki, to save space.

2008-11-13 [psyco_gurl]: All music is emo, cause some sort of emotion goes into making music no matter what it sounds like

2008-11-13 [psyco_gurl]: but i dont like whiny bitch music

2008-11-13 [Lerune]: I'd prefer to use the full word "emotional" because I am a big fan of the English language in all its entirety. ;)

2008-11-13 [Paul Doyle]: Besides, "emo" sounds way too close to "emu", which should be an insult. Besides being a dangerous bird that's good eating and has lots of meat, "emu" connotes silliness and stupidity.

2008-11-15 [Nita]: It's amazing how quickly discussions about music degenerate into shows of one-upmanship and creative bashing of an outgroup 0:)

2008-11-15 [Paul Doyle]: When "underground" trends in pop culture become mainstream, they become parodies of themselves. Emos just happen to look and sound a bit more ridiculous than most other formerly "underground' trends that became mainstream. But then again, there was once an "underground" music style played at gay black dance clubs in the early 1970s. It caught on like wildfire and became known as "disco". It took about five minutes for that to become a self-parody.

2008-11-15 [Paul Doyle]: This also happens to "underground" bands that go mainstream. I haven't heard Death Magnetic yet (I'm kind of scared to, after buying the last three albums and feeling like I got scammed) but Metallica became a self-parody of itself in the worst way.

2008-11-16 [Lerune]: I just don't like labels, and so I tend to get irritated when people say something like "omg thats so EMO." =oP

I also get irritated when people butcher the English language. >_>

2009-01-30 [Mordigen]: Question! Do we have to bring legitimate albums, or can we bring some our own self-burned mixed discs?

2009-01-30 [Paul Doyle]: If you made the stuff yourself (if you were in the band, for example) go ahead and post it, even if it's just a demo that never made it to a professional studio. But if you made a mix album, I'm not sure if that would be cool. But again, this is an open thing not meant to be taken too seriously . . . so go ahead and post whatever you want :)

(Even if it's Michael Bolton's greatest hits . . . o___O)

2009-01-30 [Mordigen]: .....*shifty eyes* is michael bolton not a good thing?? *whoopsies*

I was just curious, because choosing only 10 albums is a really hard task.......I thought maybe I could cheat, by taking all my top fave songs and putting them on 10 mix CDs *snorts* XD

2009-01-30 [Paul Doyle]: Good stuff is what you want I to be, of course :)

Again, go ahead and do what you want.
