THE ISLE OF AVALON

On burning mornings often there
He saw the king of Fairyland
Hunting round him with his band
With dim crying and blowing sounds
Amid the baying of the hounds

"Sir Orfeo"

There are countless sites which exist equally in Faƫrie and in the mortal realm. These midway points function as gateways between the two lands. They are seldom larger than a clearing or small hill, and at most they encompass a small forest. The glaring exception is the Isle of Avalon, which is widely known to be the largest area that exists exactly on the border between the mundane and the fantastic.

The island is huge and rises out of a different lake almost every day day. A large fairy castle towers from the cliff on the west-coast of the Isle, and whoever controls the castle has enormous power over the traffic with humanity. At the moment House Dikara has the fortress, and thereby the island, though it has changed hands countless times through the ages.

The island itself is lush and green, with idyllic forests dotting the ascending hillsides. The only permanent habitation is the fortress and the docks, while the rest of the land is more loosely inhabited by roaming fey. Mists always surround the land, obscuring it from wiew, but on the isle itself the air is clear and warm, and the day is light as summer noontime.

Fey of all types live there, rejoicing in the freedom, mobility and rest the place offers. By ancient law no fey in Avalon may be given an order or assignment against their will. This does not apply to those inhabiting the fortress, of course. Avalon is peaceful, and it has the power to heal the most grievous injuries and illnesses if given enough time.

Yet the peace is never endless, for the power of the place regularly incites someone to try and seize it through force of arms. That is why the only dwelling is a fortress and not a palace, and the battles for Avalon are legendary for their fierceness and their frequency. The desire for peace and healing all too often leads to war and death.
