LANDS

Lands are going to be the force behind your deck. Every deck needs some sort of land. There are several types of land cards, most commonly BASIC lands.
Basic lands come in 5 types:
PLAINS (symbol of a sun)
ISLAND (symbol of a water drop)
SWAMP (symbol of a skull)
MOUNTAIN (symbol of a fireball)
FOREST (symbol of a tree)
oh, would you look at that, they symbol on the land matches the symbol in the mana cost of the card, I wonder what that means?
It means that you use the land to produce 1 mana of that lands colour. A mountain, when used, produces 1 red mana. A swamp produces 1 black mana.

Playing Lands
You are allowed to put one land card from your hand into play once per turn, during your main phase. (more on that in the turns wiki) the land may be used as soon as it is in play.

Using lands
when you use a land, you TAP it, and you turn it sideways to show that you've used it up for the turn, and won't be able to use it again until next turn!
When you've tapped your land, the mana is now "floating" around under your control (in your "pool"). You then must use the mana to play a spell by the end of the phase, otherwise bad things happen.

Mana burn
"Mana burn" is a term to describe what happens when mana is added to your pool, but not used up. If mana is not used up by the end of the phase it was added to your pool, then you take 1 damage for each mana floating.
(ex, you tap 10 lands, then play a 7-mana spell. You would then take 3 damage from mana burn)
Mana burn shouldn't be a factor in your games unless you're playing with lands that add more then one mana to your pool.

Tips
A good deck will have approximately 2 spells to every 1 land, meaning that there should be at least 20 land in a 60 card deck.
Lands are not your only source of mana production, there are plenty of creatures, artifacts and enchantments that will aid you should you find yourself short of mana.
