THE TURNS
At the beginning of the game, each player gives thier deck a quick shuffle, then decides who goes first. (note: it's common to have your opponant shuffle your deck as well, as a gesture of fair play) then each player draws seven cards off the top of thier library, and the game begins.
(note: if you don't like your opening hand, you can take a MULLIGAN by shuffling your hand back into your library and drawing a hand of one less card. You can do this for any reason, but only before the game starts.)
UNTAP STEP
At the very beginning of your turn, you get to untap everything under your control, so it's all fresh and ready to use.
UPKEEP
This step has no purpose except for cards that have a cost that must be paid during your upkeep.
DRAW STEP
(note: the person who goes first does NOT draw a card on thier first turn)
Self-explanito
ry, you take a card from your library and put it in your hand. If you cannot, you lose the game immiedietly.
(remember: untap - upkeep - draw, in that order!)
MAIN PHASE
This is where the fun begins! play a land, if you have one, and then play some spells.
COMBAT PHASE
This is where it gets nasty. This step is skipped if you don't wish to attack this turn. The combat phase is seperated into 5 steps:
-Declare attack - let your opponant know that you are attacking them, so they can respond.
-Declare attackers - what are you attacking with? tap the creatures to show that you are attacking with them.
-Declare blockers - the defending player decides if they want to block, and with what.
-First strike damage - creatures with the "first strike" or "double strike" ability deal damage here, and creatures killed are sent to the graveyard.
-Normal damage - all other damage is dealt here, and any other creatures killed in combat are sent to the graveyard.
POST-COMBAT MAIN PHASE
After everything has attacked and blocked, there is a second main phase where you can play additional spells.
DISCARD STEP
Count the number of cards in your hand. If you have more then seven, then you need to put cards from your hand into your graveyard until you have seven.
END OF TURN
self-explanitory. If there is nothing else to be done, declare end-of-turn (say "go".) and pass the turn to your opponant.
