I don't see any reason why you can't call your spouse anything you damn well please. The law can state that thou shalt not call a tissue a Kleenex, but how likely is it going to enforce it in your home?

The difference between domestic partnership and marriage--the problem with it in the US is that it isn't a Federal issue. Which means that certain rights you have in California won't apply in Oregon, since each state has different laws about what a domestic partnership is. I live in California and there's a huge hullaballoo about Prop 8, which is a grand total of a sentence long: only a marriage between a man and a woman is recognized in the state of California.

2008-11-04 [Zab]: Well, I simply meant since most gay people I know is quite happy with being gay and doesn't see it as a flaw. If you thought it was a flaw to be gay and wanted to correct it, why would you marry another person of the same sex?

And I was talking about a big debate in sweden, where there are no legal differenses between marriage and partnership, except for the name. Of course you can discss it how you want, but it would be interesting to see what you think about the suggestion I posted in my other comment. And that can only be done fairly if you think of partnership and marriage as something with the same rights.

At first it seems like having a new word for non-religious marriages would be good, but I can't help but feel like we'd end up with the same problem we have now. At this point in Sweden it's a matter of diction. The only reason to not have them interchangable is if they had different rights attached to them--as opposed to how it is now in Sweden, according to what you're saying.

Which brings me back to my other point--if they are interchangable in the eyes of the law, why shouldn't they be in the eyes of everyone else? Therefore, why CAN'T you say "my husband" or "my wife", no matter what the occasion? Sure, you could say "my domestic partner" in the interest of being politically correct, but it is this Elftowner's opinion that being politically correct is a miniscule issue.

2008-11-04 [Zab]: I think it would change peoples point of view tho, in time. If all non-religeous marriages had the same name, it wouldn't be any different with gay or non gay marriages..and then what the churches allow is up to them.

That's just because the church is stupid. >) Besides,either there'd be another word for that too, or husband and wife wuld be the same, or people would say it no matter what.

2008-11-05 [Shadow Gypsey]: The idea of another name is a interesting one. The only reason I would be hesitant to endorse it would be:

1.It might be considered a "fad" only to fade out in a couple of months.

2. You just can't add a new word and expect everyone to pick it up.

3. It would add credit to critics who are saying we are trying to destroy the santity of marriage. I mean, what else could they assume from someone saying "We arent married, we are ______." The first thing they would say is that we are trying to say that an institiution that has been around from the beginning of Christian civilization is equal to one we just "made up".

4. I genuinly dont think straight people would use it.

With all that being said, I wish it would work. Seriously, it would be a neat way to skirt the stranglehold bigots have on a "proper" marriage cerimony.

I have to agree with Pnelma, though. I think it would end up being a new word for what we already have.

Zab, I just think that over here, the word marriage is so widely used that no matter what they called it officially wouldnt make a difference, you see? It would be the same as the words "Civil Cerimony" are if you get married at the courthouse.

Most people get married in a church here, at least where I live.

I still don't understand who exactly is going to arrest you for calling your domestic partner your wife or your husband, or vice versa. If it's not a matter of rights, it's a matter of syntax, and then who the hell cares if you say wife or domestic partner, or black or African American(in the case of the States, of course), or white or caucasian?

But I do understand that at some jobs people don't want gay people..
If I needed assistance for example, to wash and dress etc.. I wouldn't want a man, and I wouldn't want a lesbian to do it. It would feel uncomfortable, even tho of course neither men or lesbians are sex crazy rapists..
