2013-01-02 [Viking]: I will again highly recommend The Desert of Souls. And if you like that, you may very well love Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed.
And CS Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy is an excellent choice.
2013-01-02 [Nioniel]: Yeah, these were the ones from last year that I wasn't able to get to. :/
I'll add those; I've heard from a few people that the Coldfire Trilogy is very good.
2013-01-02 [Nioniel]: So I have this Nook, and I was hoping that some of these books would be available for free download. Nope. Lots of smut is, though.
2013-01-04 [Sideways]: Just like last year, Nio-baby. A Game of Thrones.
You read nao!
2013-01-04 [Nioniel]: The only reason I haven't checked it out is because I've heard it's got quite a few rape/incest scenes throughout the series, and that's an area I don't do well with.
2013-01-04 [Sideways]: Um... Here and there, I guess. It's not what it's about.
2013-01-04 [Sideways]: The incest is between adult brothers and sisters, in any case..
2013-01-04 [Nioniel]: Still, that's not something I like to read about, even here and there. :)
2013-01-04 [Sideways]: Okay, okay. It's a pretty gritty, adult storyline. In the four-and-somet
oh! And invincible zombies. Lots of those. And dragons roasting dudes...
2013-01-04 [Nioniel]: :P
2013-01-04 [Sideways]: For some simpler, geek type stuff, if you like Star Wars, I highly recommend the Darth Bane trilogy.
It's boatloads of awesome, because it doesn't really try to shove ultra-specific crap in your face like a lot of the other series do, what with obscure alien races, weird ass stood and ship and gun names, or political bullshit.
It's main draw is being 100% about the badguy. The really, really badass, winning badguy. Also, if you're geeky at all about SW, it helps to point out that it's the story of why there is only two sith and a bazillion Jedi. A sweet, sweet story.
Darth Bane: Path of Destruction
Darth Bane: The Rule of Two
Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil
These books really shine by balancing Chuck Norrisian levels of epic violence with surprisingly thought provoking philosophical themes, as well as a protagonist that will soak the panties of any fangirl who digs evil, lightsabers, or, ironically enough, the Dark Knight Rises version of Bane, who is eeriely much more similar to Darth Bane than the mega-steroid abusing, surgically modified, genius Mexican luchador from the comics.
2013-04-27 [Nioniel]: So I finally got the SD card in my Nook to start working, and there's 60-some odd books on the card that are actual books! Not just the self-published icky stuff that I've been sifting through. As a result, I've added a few of them here. :P
I didn't really care for The Hunger Games as a movie, but I've had several friends that have recommended the book to me. Only a few chapters in at this point.
2013-05-04 [Nioniel]: Even though I didn't like The Hunger Games, I figured I'd give the second book a chance. So far, it's proving to be significantly better.
2013-06-01 [Nioniel]: Srsly have no clue how to review any of the books in the Game of Thrones series. So many spoilers. :/
2013-06-06 [Viking]: Yeah, I know what you mean. It's also tough to review books in a series.
2013-06-06 [Nioniel]: Yarr, the Hunger Games series was pretty hard to review.
2013-06-15 [Nioniel]: I'm finding that High Fantasy is the genre for me.
Also, rather pathetically, I've doubled the number of books I read for the challenge last year. Yup, a whopping ten so far. Never gonna make it to 50.
2013-06-15 [Nioniel]: I severely underestimated how long these books are, too. It's been a long time since I read something over 1,000 pages, so it's been taking longer to add more books to my list of completed titles.
Yeah, you normally cruise through them pretty quickly. Hurry up, you!
2013-06-15 [Viking]: I'm on The Bones of the Old Ones now, and it's going pretty quickly. It's the sequel to Desert of Souls.
2013-06-15 [Nioniel]: Cool. :)
