† Order of St-Elmo †
The Ancient & Mystical Heterodox Order of St-Elmo is dedicated to spread the Good Word -- whatever it be -- throughout the seven seas.
But who is this St-Elmo anyways?
According to legend, Erasmus of Formiae (later canonized as St-Elmo) was a third-century martyr captured & tortured under both Diocletian & Maximian. Divine intercession saved him several times, notably from a lightning storm that killed all his persecutors. Due to his miraculous imperviousness to lethal meteorological conditions, St-Elmo later became the patron saint of sailors. The electro-magnec
tic phenomenon known as St-Elmo's Fire is thought to indicate the saint's support.
Of course, that's the Catholic version. St-Elmo may be part of the host of pre-Christian folk deities to have been Christianized in the early Middle-Ages.
So what does the Order do?
On this matter, no one is actually clear. Rumour has it that the Order had, at some point, its own rule & charter; unfortunately, the document was lost in a shipwreck. The chiefest points of dispute amongst its members include the matter of the Order's allegiances -- was it mandated by the Catholic Pope or by the Orthodox Patriarchs? Having found no satisfactory answer to this question, the Order has been inducting men & women from all Christian denominations, & also -- against all common sense & logic -- people of other Faiths, including Reformed Judaism, Islamic Sufism &, more recently, Pastafarianism.
