Single panel cartoons are exactly what they're called... a cartoon made up of just one panel. These single panel cartoons generally contain practically any style of art imaginable along with a gag or punchline. Successful single panel cartoons usually have the gag or punchline in the forefront and the art must simply compliment.

Here's an example of a single panel cartoon:

<img:stuff/Battytoon.jpg>

Single panel cartoons can be found practically everywhere! Newspapers, magazines, advertisements... even on the web! The reason is because they're simple, independent, can cover any genre or topic and easily gets the point of humor across quickly.

Now that you know what a single panel cartoon is... it's time to work on your very own single panel cartoon! :D What we'll do here is agree on a subject matter/topic to make a cartoon about, set a deadline and let your imagination and creativity run wild!!! Writers and artists may do this on their own or may team-up if you like. The object is to make it as funny as possible with art that supports the punchline/gag. Your cartoon can be done in black & white or color. Just post your finished comic here in the wiki by the subject matter/topic's deadline. We'll then enjoy reading everyones cartoons, openly discuss and constructively crit them all in the comment section below afterwords. :) The experience should be fun, entertaining and educational. Thus is the theory of a workshop! :)

Cartoon #4
Subject: Dwarves & Elves

2009-06-25 [Sir. Robert]: Bananas, "Awkward" Moments, Jokes Gone Horribly Wrong, Death by Falling Objects, Quirks/Excessive Compulsive, Electricity, ________'s on a plane, 3 Wishes, Bad Inventions ...I could go on for days :P

Btw...Are we going to workshop the comics at all?

2009-07-02 [Hendercrazy]: Anyone may crit or comment on the cartoons at anytime... feel free to jump in. :D I just haven't had the time to yet. ;)

I'm hoping to work on putting together a fun (but still meaningful) grading point system soon that we all can use to grade each cartoon on a general consensus. Then, if anyone wants to elaborate further on any specific aspects of each cartoon... may still do so. :D How does that sound?

2009-07-03 [Sir. Robert]: Sounds good, but only if you have "free time" :P

You should toss up another deadline so I have something to do while avoiding work.

2009-07-03 [Hendercrazy]: Older cartoons from the workshop have been moved over to the TCW - Single Panel Cartoon Archive wiki. :D

2009-07-03 [Hendercrazy]: Cartoon #4 challenge is up!!! :D

2009-07-16 [Sir. Robert]: ok...now that I have wasted the first week, I have 2 weeks to make a submission :)

2009-07-16 [Hendercrazy]: Me too [Sir. Robert]! :P

2009-07-16 [Sir. Robert]: What do you mean by "background" for this comic...

2009-07-16 [Hendercrazy]: Something that resembles placement or an environment of some sort. It doesn't have to be an elaborate background... or even fill the entire space. Just amping up the artistic challenge of it a bit. :)

2009-07-16 [Sir. Robert]: ok...I will keep at it ;)

2009-07-23 [Hendercrazy]: Just a quick reminder... Cartoon #4 is due this Saturday! :)

2009-07-25 [Hendercrazy]: My cartoon is up! You still have the rest of the day today to get yours completed and tossed into the wiki. Cheers! :)

2009-07-26 [Sir. Robert]: I should have mine finished and posted by midnight :P ...I left town yesterday and had little time to do the details, but I will post something :)

2009-07-26 [Sir. Robert]: Well...only 6 and 1/2 hour late, but at least it is pretty much finished :) Elftown was being crabby!

2009-07-26 [pixish]: haha, I like that one Sir. Robert :)

2009-07-26 [Hendercrazy]: LMAO!!! Awesome idea with the lemonade stands [Sir. Robert]! Not only was it funny... but I love the fact that the dwarven stand is a cut down tree and the elven stand pokes direct fun at their skill/size. :P

2009-07-26 [Sir. Robert]: Thank you :)

Competition = Lemonade Stands when I was a kid...nobody made any real money, but there was rivalry

2009-07-27 [Sir. Robert]: The thought of the dwarf in a full body cast is amazingly funny :P I love how much action you are able to fit into a single frame and how even a simple background can add so much to the comic.

2009-08-21 [Sir. Robert]: I am seriously considering making a comic for the paper my university publishes daily. They are pretty desperate for comics, and most of the artists who have a comic there are stealing content from web comics like xkcd and reposing it with their own images. Now all I need is to make 75 three panel comics to submit :P

2009-08-31 [Hendercrazy]: Go for it [Sir. Robert]! :)

2010-11-12 [pixish]: You guys should submit some of these to The Town Herald as Guest submissions :) [Sir. Robert], you could submit them into the humour section since you're already a heralder :p
