The Fountain
As reviewed by [Linderel]
Having discovered the movie entirely by accident, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The music video that featured it peaked my interest but didn't really give much of a picture. Nevertheless, I acquired a copy and sat down to watch it one ordinary Saturday - and had my mind blown away.
The Fountain shows us three parallel stories, the main characters of which all have a variation of the same name. Tom Creo is in turn a conquistador, a doctor desperately trying to save his ailing wife, and an astronaut in the far future travelling through space in an ecosphere with a slowly dying tree.
The film starts off with a reference to the Bible, but it also draws heavily from Mayan mythology - something which makes it especially interesting to those fascinated by ancient cultures, such as myself.
Hugh Jackman shows his ability as a diverse actor here, playing three different yet overlapping characters with skill. Rachel Weisz as the Queen of Spain and the doctor's wife, Izzi, does a great performance as well. The beautiful soundtrack, composed by Clint Mansell, works to make the film all the more haunting and thought-provok
ing.
Intensely emotional and full of stunning visuals, this movie will leave your brain in knots for hours, possibly days - and you will enjoy every moment of it.
