Tales from Kyerrion

Tales from Kyerrion (TFK) is a sci-fi/fantasy story written by [Veltzeh]. It tells the tale of a few civilizations and cultures of aliens living in their "medieval" ages from the points of view of three different people. Or ten. I've always had a problem when it comes to the amount of main and side characters. The story is quite graphic when it comes to sex and violence at times, but most of the time it's quite non-explicit.
I have issues with plotting, so I made a page to discuss, poke and improve the plot of the story. The page will obviously spoil a lot of things, so if you want to read the story and be surprised (hopefully) every now and then, you should probably avoid reading it. Then again, if you DON'T want to read the huge story, maybe the plot outline will be enough. Without further ado, the page: TFK plotting.

The story includes many weird words. Save for the personal pronouns, they're explained in the introductory chapter. Pronouns:
ey: he/she (they)
eir: her/his (their)
em: her/him (them)

The Heritage of Humankind is set in the same universe as TFK, though the connection is only mentioned in TFK.

Introduction: <URI:_THOH-TFK0.html> (edit version: THOH-TFK0.html) (updated 2011-06-10)
First part: <URI:_THOH-TFK1.html> (edit version: THOH-TFK1.html) (updated 2011-06-10)
Second part: <URI:_THOH-TFK2.html> (edit version: THOH-TFK2.html)
Third part: <URI:_THOH-TFK3.html> (edit version: THOH-TFK3.html)

There is more information available on femehans, the main species in the story. Kyerrion setting is also described on its own page, though nearly all of it is from the introductory chapter.

I started TFK when I decided to take part in NaNoWriMo 2006. I continued it in 2007 and a tiny bit in 2008 as well. I wrote it outside of NaNoWriMo as well. I feel like I should mention that the story isn't "NaNo quality" because I'm an infernal nitpicker and re-edit forever. However, while I do try to write as well as I can, I'm notoriously undescriptive at times.

2010-03-21 humynoid: yo, hello from hki! found yr art on elfwood first, and now i'm totally hooked on yr Tales of Kyerrion stuff! Just read through parts 1-3, impatiently waiting for more... Gotta say though, lotsa room for improvement throughout the text - the feel is somehow a bit schematic/mechanical/flat sometimes. But i guess there's also good sides to not being all romantical-poetic-ecstatic about things. Gives a certain touch of real-life awkwardness to the sex scenes :)
But that's just the surface, the real reason i like yr stuff is your world/setting creation - it's outrageously great throughout! And the sex/gender stuff was exactly what i needed to see/read!!!! [mode:endless appreciation&gratefulness!!!!] I also keep looking through the pics again and again, they almost carry the story by themselves (and who can resist endless streams of cuddling/nude androgynes...). To give some constructive criticism again, i think they have a wee bit much of this cartoonish 'cleanness' and 'flatness', and light/shadow is often a bit weird too, giving it all a slightly-too-smooth-to-feel-real feel. It's like the light & weather is always the same & no-one/nothing never get dirty! (Even the ppl in water look quite dry:) ) Get physical! Well whtever, i really am in no position to criticise, so might as well shower some more praise: i admire yr abilities with facial expressions and drawing story scenes (because i feel so lousy at those things myself)! Keep up the good art!

2010-03-21 humynoid: some more constructive criticism re: the drawings: maybe it's just the imaginary physics of yr imaginary races, but i think you usually emphasise muscles & tendons a bit much. Take it easy with those anatomy books...

2010-03-21 [Veltzeh]: Thanks!
I've been working on not being totally clinical about descriptions and my writing in general, but I'm not sure how much (or little) I've progressed... I can't even tell. I think there's been some improvement but I still need detailed advice on writing better.
And well, lots of the drawings are sketches so I didn't really put time into drawing them that properly, heh. I definitely have issues with lighting and different materials so I'm going to work on those ...eventually. Once I stop being busy and procrastinating. And the muscles... I just like drawing them so much. XD
Either way, I'm glad you specifically liked the setting and the sex/gender stuff!

2011-06-16 [Kiddalee]: You just updated those??? I was thinking of continuing reading this without having to reread the beginning. :O

2011-06-16 [Veltzeh]: Oops? X) I don't think the updates were so drastic that you'd have to reread them though. :)

2011-06-26 [Kiddalee]: Speaking of lots of sexes... My man just got a hold of The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin; I'll never be able to keep up on my reading...

2011-06-26 [Veltzeh]: Awesome! It's a great book. :)

2011-11-09 Priest: Great common sense here. Wish I'd thugoht of that.

2011-11-09 [Veltzeh]: Hm?

2011-11-09 [Kiddalee]: Maybe he means the Spivak pronouns: so sensible that the Oxford people won't touch them.

2011-11-09 [Veltzeh]: Heh, maybe!

2014-07-27 [Stephen]: Would this be suitable for being nominated on Featured Story?

2014-07-27 [Veltzeh]: I don't think so; there are sexually explicit parts.

2014-07-27 [Stephen]: There's no rule against nominating stories with explicit parts.

I should ask about that, actually..

2014-07-28 [Veltzeh]: Yeah, better ask first.

2014-07-29 [Stephen]: Well, we deemed you can nominate NSFW things as long as it's tagged NSFW in the feature. xD

2014-07-29 [Veltzeh]: Well, if you do think it would be a good idea to nominate this, go ahead.
