The Golden Compass; Philip Pullman review

I finally decided to read this book almost a year after viewing the film, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The tale is about a girl named Lyra who is fated to save the universe (sort of cliché, I know) but can't know that's her fate or else she'll fail. It's the first book in a series of three (His Dark Materials is the name of the series as a whole), and I liked it quite a bit.

It's a great book for not only teens but adults as well, I think. There were some spine-tingling passages that were incredibly well written, and the plot itself was quite good. The one problem was that it started off a little bit slow, but sped up and made it hard for me to put the book down towards the end.

Overall it was a fantastic read and I recommend it to anyone. (:

2011-04-28 [Linderel]: You only read this now? :O

2011-04-28 [Akayume]: Yesh. :O I know, I am terribly behind. But I spent my childhood Reading A Series of Unfortunate Events, the HP Series, and various other novels. :P I didn't even know this existed until the movie.

2011-04-28 [Linderel]: Oh, you young thing. :P My childhood was spent with Nancy Drew, Stephen King and random fantasy and sci-fi such as His Dark Materials, Forgotten Realms stuff, Death Gate Cycle and Hobb's assassin trilogy. Oh, and Dracula.

2011-04-28 [Linderel]: Huh. I just checked, and the first Potter book was published when I was about 12. o_O Doesn't feel like it!

2011-04-28 [Akayume]: The first Potter book came out when I was in the second grade. :P

2011-04-28 [Linderel]: What is that age-wise? :P
And, well, first Potter was originally published the summer before I turned 11, but I said 12 'cause obviously I read a translated copy. <_< I only started reading books in English when I was something like 15 or 16.

2011-04-28 [Akayume]: Eight? Maybe? o.o In the 6th grade I was 12.

I didn't read them until I was in the 4th grade, however.

2011-04-28 [Akayume]: also, they suck. - Andrei, my lecture mate. :P

2011-04-28 [Linderel]: xD They're okay. Not, y'know, Great Literature but at least they got kids reading. And I kind of like the world. I'm one of those people who will happily forget all about some crucial events like certain characters dying or whatever and read fanfic.

2011-04-28 [Akayume]: I agree with you. Andrei is jsut a jerk. :P

2011-04-29 [windowframe]: In England, this book is called Northern Lights. :o

2011-04-29 [Linderel]: That's strange :O
The Finnish translation has the equivalent of the American name.

2011-04-29 [Linderel]: Oops. :P

2011-04-29 [windowframe]: Bah. I was hoping to delete my comment before you read it. X) Apparently I was talking mostly bollocks. :P Northern Lights.

2011-04-29 [Linderel]: I schee.

2011-04-29 [Akayume]: It's because there's another pretty well-known book here that was already published as Northern Lights.

2011-04-29 [windowframe]: ... It's 'cause the working Title was Golden Compasses, and the US publisher constantly misread it as Golden Compass, thought it referred to the Alietheometre, took a shine to it, and demanded they keep that title.

2011-04-29 [Akayume]: Or that. :P

2011-04-29 [Akayume]: But there's still a book called Northern Lights here.
