The Neurotic's Winter

Neurotics believe that it serves them right to suffer. Some go so far as to believe that they were put on this earth to suffer. Winter is nothing more or less than the perfect excuse for suffering.

Except for those regions of a country that have problems of their own such as characterless residential "loops" and no real good pizza, winter is cold, dark, and windy. They streets are a glaze of ice. Department stores are overheated. The car won't start and then you make things worse by flooding the engine, and then you can't tell when it's not flodded anymore and you can't get back to concentrating on the original problem again.

It is much better just to stay in the house during winter, and that is what many neurotics do (as they do in every other season). It is a time for watching crackerjack old movies on television and wishing they still made them like that. It is a time for reading the newspaper from front page to back and doing the crossword puzzle and even doing the stupid little word jumble puzzles that a three-year-old could do. It is a time for eating out of cans, and listening to radio talk shows, and looking through old letters and yearbooks and photo albums. And all the time, deep down inside, you are suffering. It is a wonderful time.
