The Art Competition: The Ultimate RPG art competition

The wealthy port of Fealor was once a thriving prosperous city full of gleaming palaces, bustling market places and wealthy merchants. There was much money to be made here and there still is, but now there is also much to loose. For in these recent times the city has become full of rogues and vagabonds and crafty tricksters who are all too ready to slit your throat for the purse in your belt. It can be a dangerous place at times, and you never know what you might come across at night on your own in the dingy back alleys of the dockyards.
Magic is afoot in Fealor. Its patron goddess has been meddling with the lives of mortals. The city is restless. The once glimmering, splendourous skyline now looks dark and opressive...brooding. The air in the city which used to been fresh and salty blown inland from the sea now gained a rotten, putrid tang. The whole place is slowly being plunged into chaos and sorcerers, magikers and all manner if dangerous persons have been sighted within the city walls...

A lone figure approached the gates to the city, a bow on his back and a white falcon sitting comfortablely on his other shoulder. He was cloaked, masking most of his features from the guards there, but as he looked up at they could see bright blue eyes, blond hair in his eyes.

"SO, this is the city of Fealor." he said, an elven accent to his words, a musical tenor voice. "We are here, Mya." he spoke to the bird, scratching under her simple leather collar, which stood out from her white feathers. With a pleased mewling, the falcon leaned into his scratch as he walked to the gate...

Hatita veiwed her city with reknewed interest. Her little game was about to get a whole lot more interesting, she could feel it...She scanned the city focusing on the outskirts, checking for new comers. At the Northern Gates stood a heavily cloaked, yet unmistakeabaly elven man, waiting patiently for the ignorant guards to open the gates for him. Her eyes glittered - her dealings with elves before had been most satisfactory...she was going to have some fun with this one...

"Might I find entrance to the city?" He asked the guards, who seemed to notice him for the first time. At once they tried to look menacing, but the effect was lost on the elf.

"What is your name and business in Fealor." one demanded. The elf eyed him a moment, and threw back the hood, showing blond hair and pronouced pointed ears to them. Mya fluttered her wings, disturbed by the movement of the cloak, but she settled back quickly.

"My name is Elariel, and I have come to seek shelter." the elf said. "Will that be alright."

The guards looked at each other and back, and seeing that they were having little effect with thier actions, turned and opened the gate, allowing him entrance to the city.

Seeing this Elariel inclined his head to them, and turning he went into the city, leaving his hood back.

Hatita, still watching the elf entering the city laughs. a Low, sickly sweet, musical laugh. Although underneath it holds a hidden hint of hardness.

Still smiling, she waves her hand across her face, transforming it to that of a bucksome, rosy-cheeked barmaid and closes her eyes for a second creating a simple dress of a plain russet coloured, hessian material around her form. She doesn't wear it well. Her slender, boyish body, almost devoid of curves looks alien and out of place in the simple unflattering clothes. They hang off her. Lifeless.

She once more closes her eyes, this time altering her figure. Plumping out her curves and creating a not unpleasantly rounder, shorter frame. She pulls her hand though a tangle of dark brown, shiny hair. closes once more her now dull grey, sparkling eyes and appears in a cobbled street, a few feet behind the elf.

Mya stiffened, her claws momentarily gripping into the cloak and to his skin, drawing his attention.

"Relax, Mya.. It will take you a few moments to get used to the city sounds, as it will I." he said softly in elven to the bird. He could read in the common language, scanning the signs for a suitable inn, all the while watching those around him. He had spent enough time in human cities to be able to feel his way around them, his senses were aware, although it did not show on his delicate features..

Kera wachted this from the trees keeping hidden from the suns blinding rays tilting her head to figure out the two surface dewellers game. For a brief second Kera wanted to go into the city but thought better not.
"Drow wouldn't be welcomed there." she mumbled silently

The girl who appeared in the shadows of the street dusts herself down a looks to check that nobody has observed her less than ordinary arrival. She glances around again hurriedly...carelessly...and steps into the bustle of the street. Everywhere merchants are shouting their wares above the unending babble of customers haggling and bargaining. She keeps her eyes glued to the shining blonde hair of the elf - a fair distance in front of her - as she sets forth into crowd.

She ignores the pleading of the dirt-encrusted street children and the fine fabrics of the traders as she trails the man through the labryinth of streets and alleys which make up Fealor.

Elariel avoided the shops, stopping long enough to put a hood over Mya's eyes. At once the falcon calmed, though she shifted this way and that, still hearing the sounds around her..

He saw a promising Inn ahead, windows lit in bright colors as the lights shone through the colored glass..

Kera tilts her head at the gates of the city as she carefully walks to them not sure how they would greet her kind. She noted the weak walls compared to those of her home the guards looked half awake in her eyes for that she grumbeled slightly as she stood in front of the gates peering up at them sliently.

Hatita closed her eyes and stood still. Out of place lines of deep concentration stood out on the pretty round face and harsh whispers issued at bullet speed from between her soft, plump lips. The frowning and whispering ceased and the whole raucus hubbub of the city fell silent. Like all the air, noise, sound...life...of the place had been drained into a vacuum. Hatita lifted her arms high above her head and took a long...slow...deep...breath....

For a moment there was complete still.

Then, all at once the street seemed to fall in on itself. it was like a vortex. A whilwind. With Hatita at the centre. A mad chaotic, influx of shadows and cobbles and people. She closed her eyes again bringing everything to a halt, and breathed out once. Expelling all the air in her body. The spiralling contents of the street shifted.

Everything immediately returned to normal the hubbub resumed and the market returned to life. Nobody paid any difference to the Inn witht he coloured windows that had miraculously appeared inbetween the apothkary and the stables. No-one blinked an eyelid.

Kera slipt passed the guards into the city looking around for somewhere to stay her fangs extened as she looked from one possaibly vitcim to an other. Kera shoke her head and walked on enjoying the surface worlds city.

Elariel turned at feeling a shift of some kind, a release of strong magic. Mya sat quietly on his shoulder.

Such a strange place, he thought. Although he had spent many a day in human cities, it had been a long time since he had been in one. He would be grateful to get inside a warm building, away from prying eyes...

Hatita watched as the elf-man stood pondering over entering the inn. The inn that had so miraculously appeared - unnoticed by everyone. She sent out whispers into the air. "warm....comfort....bed...sleep...come stay...please stay...your welcomed...come in...warmth..." The building resonated saftey and comfort and sleep.
Pleased with her work she entered the bar from the backdoor and waited for the elf-man.

Elariel entered the building, thankful to be out of the cool air outside. This inn seemed more inviting than anyother thing at the moment. Closing the door behind him, he threw his cloak back over his free shoulder, showing a simple tunic pulled over a shirt, travel pants with leather traveling boots. At his belt was a long sword, elven in make.

Seeign the woman at the bar he smiled, taking Mya onto his arm and pulling the cloak back completely, showing a bit of leather strapped there, obviously for Mya to sit on.

"Good afternoon to you." he said politely, putting the small falcon, Mya back in her place.  "Might there be room in the inn for an elf on his own?"

The woman smiled back at the elf. Leaning provocatively over the bar.
"Well that would depend, wouldn't it? on if he would be entirely on his own, the whole, complete time..." Unnoticeable to most she weaved whispers around him. The whispers held promises. Unheard temptations. He had so little idea.

Elariel blinked at the question, confused for a moment. He gave a quick bright laugh, filling the room..

"I would know if I was not alone." he said. "and aside from my companion here on my shoulder I have been alone, at least in the sense of being around another on two legs."

Mya gave a little cry in Elariel's ear, making him flinch. Reaching up to remove her hood, Elariel looked at his hostess.
"She tends to think she is an elf, though she hardly matches the description.. : he explained lightly..

Kera wondered around the city boredly seeming to find nothing to do at all surpised not seeing an other drow around knowing she bearly spoke any other tounge as she looked around the market and asked for some food not sure people would understand her tounge

That bird...Hatita could sense something about it...it seemed to be sheilding the elf from her charmed words. She had to get rid of it, but first needed to understand its true nature.
Looking back at the elf she giggled, girlishly, changing her plan.
"my lord! do not take offence! i did not mean for I to accompany you! but we have had customers taking liberties with our good nature and trust here. and have often smuggled others to their rooms to escape a full charge! Although i am sure you would do no such thing!" She smiled up at him. "That is indeed a beautiful, proud bird! May i enquire as to its origins?" she stroked the feathers of the animal gently with the back of her fingers.

Canis paused as he approached the city...He sniffed the air and he caught the scent of life within the artificial shapes of buildings. He growled to himself and began to cautiously make his way towards the gates, pausing every few steps to check that his presence was not yet known to anyone...

As he approached the gates, he noticed the gaurds...well armed and, unlike most gaurds, not asleep. He thought about attacking them...killing them, but quickly dismissed that idea. If he killed on his first day, then the town authorities would be on the prowl and Canis couldn't afford to be hunted yet...Quickly adopting a new plan, he removed the pack containing his clothes from his backand placed it on the ground.

Canis looked at the moon...focusing on it he began to will his body to take on the shape of a human's. It hurt. It was like seering fire and icey water writhing through his flesh at the same time...He felt drained and sore, as his fur forced itself into his flesh and his face changed...all that remained to show who he was, after he had changed, were his deadly blue eyes and a pair of slightly overlong canines...With the transformation complete, he put on the clothes and gently strolled to the gate, bouncing slightly with each step..."I haven't been like this for a while" he thought as he strolled to the gate and caught the eyes of the gaurds...

The gaurds watched, as a strange figure emerged from the bushes and began to lightly stroll towards them...As he approached the gaurds could make out more distinguishing features of the newcomer. He had long, grubby black hair, that looked more like fur of an animal, he wore some strange out-landish garments that were tattered, grey and looked like they had been made from shreds of other clothes. As he came even closer, the gaurds saw his piercing eyes...ice blue and staring...they had never seen such eyes...

Canis watched the gaurds tighten their grips on their halberds as he closed the distance between them...When he was barely two metres away the gaurds said
"Who goes there! Come any closer and we will be forced to take action" Canis stopped abruptly, a small smile splitting his face...In a voice that was quiet, but uncannily clear, he said "Good Evening Gentlemen...I am Canis, I have come to..." He realised that he didn't know the name of the city. "...this city, to rest...I have been travelling many weeks, and I feel the need of a good drink and a comfortable bed..."
The gaurds remained where they were, though one spoke "Do you have any weapons? Any magic?" Canis gave a small laugh, though it sounded more like a dogs bark to the gaurd, and held out his pack...

Canis had been allowed into the city, after a thorough search, the gaurds had found nothing resembling weaponry or magic, so they had grudgingly let him through and into Fealor...He seemed to be in a market, and the smells on the air were numerous and powerful. Then he came accross a particular smell..."A drow!?" He thought "what is a drow doing here!?" He then moved, abandoning his jaunty step in favour of a more wolf-like lope, searching for the source of the scent...

Kera gave up trieng to speak common and walked around trying to find an inn to rest at if she could rest at all "by the goddess name the surface world is strange." she mummbled to herself as she siletnyl walked down the streets

Canis was gaining on his prey now...he knew it...he could smell that the drow was close.

The scent led away from the market and into some narrow streets...He was barely metres away now! He could tell that this drow was female...he hadn't met a drow in many moons and he wanted her blood...

Kera spun around senceing some of sort of danger as she readied a silver dagger in her hand and kept it hidden she saw a figure walking a ther at an impressive speed she turned and ran heading towwards the closest inn in her sight

Canis watched the drow run into an inn...he couldn't kill her in there...not with so many people watching. He turned away...but then thought better and casually walked into the inn...The inn was crowded...mostly with humans, but there was the odd elf...he could no longer smell the drow, her scent was lost in the stench of alcohol, sweat and dirty humans...

Kera sat with the cowed of humans gasping for breath looking at the stranger who walked in knowing that was the danger she shoke her head as she mamge to get a small dirnk of blood she dislilked the tasted of alcoholed blood and walked away from her victim

Canis began to walk around the inn...looking and smelling for signs of his prey...nothing...then he saw a little droplet of blood on the floor...he began to follow the trail of blood, inside, he knew that at the end of the trail he would find his prey!

Kera sat at the bar keeping her muslces untensed in case off combat that amy arise soon as she keeps an eye on the stranger

Mya mewled at her touch, calming. Elariel chuckled lightly.
"She is but a white falcon, my Lady. I think she likes you." he said. "She has been my companion for many moons. ANd you have no fear of me bringing in any other guests, other than her. I have raised her from an egg, and I think I have grown quite attached to her.."

Canis stopped...he saw the drow at the bar and slowly, made his way over to her. He felt his hunger rise into bloodlust, though he kept his outward appearence calm, and took the place next to the drow, still keeping eye contact with her...

Kera noded at him simply and looked away and sighed "come to kill the drow have you." raises an eyebrow at him her acent strange

"I have...a grudge against the drow, and I have sworn myself to kill as many of them as I can, until death takes me" He did not take his eyes off of her..."you are no exception" He knew that the drow felt safe in the inn, but he knew his bloodlust was beginning to take control, and soon he would change back into his true form and kill her, rip out her throat and feast on her flesh...and he would do it right in front of all the people...he no longer cared...his hatred for the drow was too strong...

Kera senced his bloodlust and giggled siletnly "well i hate werewolves but i don go around killing them i am a preistess to the darm madien i help people not enslave them." Kera shakes her ehad reading herself for combat knowing it is to come

Canis could no longer hear her words...everything was swimming in front of him, and he began to feel the icey burning rise again within his flesh. He felt the fur begin to push out of his skin and his teeth sharpen...his clothes began to rip as he transformed. Canis stood before an inn of shocked people staring at him...he let out a horrifying howl, and turned to face the drow...

Elariel felt the discomfort in the air, as soon as the elf and man had entered. A drow? he thought. I have never seen one bfore..

He heard the heated exchange, and took a step back as the man transformed, his clothes ripping from him. The others in the bar screamed.

Elariel stepped back from the bar, and with a call to Mya, she flitted into the rafters to look down. He did not grab for his weapon, instead he extended his hands before him, speaking the language of magic as tendrils of light snaked out in front of him.

At once a barrier appeared around the werwolf ( A shield from himself, really).

"STOP THIS, werewolf!" he shouted in a commanding werewolf. "This is not the place for killing! COme back to your senses!"

Kera made no move to attack as she sipt her tea calmly shwoing no fear or concern for her attacker as she mumbles in drowish "sit wolf."

Canis fought against the shield surrounding him...though he began to feel calmed...he began to relax and he stopped fighting...The huge creature stopped moving and stood there still...alert...calm...

Canis began to come back to his senses and sights and sounds flooded back...he saw the drow sitting down, sipping her tea...was this her magic!? He remained motionless, then raised his head and howled in defeat...

Elariel watched this, calmly on the outside, though his heart was racing.
"Stop your howling." he said calmly. "THis is not the place to show what you are. I am the one who put the barrier around you, it is best for all involved.."

Mya cocked her head at all the activity. It had been a while since her master had dismissed her from the danger. Her red eyes looked at the Drow, and at once she took to the air, landing on the counter in front of her. She folded in her wings neatly, and stood before her, shifting from one leg to the other.

Elariel saw this, and half smiled.
"Mya." he scolded lightly, though his eyes were still on the werewolf in front of him.

Canis ceased howling and turned to face the man who had spoken...he growled at the elf, though he felt no inner anger...He felt utterly at peace.

Canis stood and gazed at the elf...wondering who this new-comer was...

"Sorry I had to do that.." Elariel offered, his hand still raised. "There are other innocents here, I felt that they should be protected.. I have dealt with werewolves several times, I always lean to the side of safety. I mean you no harm.. I am called Elariel, what might I call you?"

He glanced over at Mya, who was calmly looking at the Drow, as if expecting a snack..

Hatita, still disguised as the barmaid watched the show with amusement. This was clearly a highly skilled elf...she had underestimated him. She cused herself for being so blind.
"Thank you" she said to the elf, "Could i get you a drink for your pains?" she Raised her voice "Look all of you NOT buying shelter or drink here will you either buy something now or get out of my inn! Does this look like a bloody theatre?!" she yelled at the new comers who had entered to witness the fight. She looked back at the elf and lowered her voice again "i didn't catch your name sir, but I'm Raelle."

Elariel turned and looked at her, and with a careful glance at the werewolf before him he lowered his hand to his side. At once the barrier faded and disappeared. He smirked at the calmness of the drow, and then looked at Raelle.

"Elariel." he nodded. "Mya is my familiar.. "
He glanced at the werewolf. "I hope that I did not anger that one, my last dealing with a werewolf was rather unpleasant.."

he returned to the bar, and motioned to the werewolf. "I would like some of your best wine, if you please, and get these two whatever they want, so long as they behave and I dont have to use my shielding again.."

Kera looked at the falcon and choose her few wrods carefully "sorry little one but i have not food for myself but i'll get you something." she sipt her tea again takeing comfort in its taste before calmly and polite asking the bar maid "ma'am my i have some more of your tea please?" setting her cup on the table carefully before sighing.

Mya tilted her feathered head at her.

"Mya." The elf said quietly, then whistled. At once she opened her wings and flew back over to his shoulder. He gave her a peice of jerked meat, from a small pouch at his side. SHe eagerly accepted it. "All will be alright, miss.. " he looked at her from where he was, keeping an eye on the werewolf as he calmed down.. "Mya can be rather.. insistant at times, my apologies.."

Kera nodded simply cant seem to respond in common so she response in drowish " its ok i am used to it not many welcome a drow." she sighs tightening her cloak around herself.

Elariel heard the language of the drow, he knew its sound, but only a handful of words. As he pulled another peice of meat from the pouch, he looked at the drow.
"Perhaps you can speak elven?" he asked in his native tongue, flowing on the air like music.

Kera nodded and spoke to him inreturn "yes i can speak elven."

Elariel smiled back at her.

"Then we will understand each other." he said, looking back at the bar to see if his drink was there yet. "What is your name, then?"

Kera sighs "my name is Kera Beanre." sighs and shivers "is it always this cold on the surface world?"

Canis was slightly dazed...he heard the elf introduce himself, and offer a drink...Canis opened his jaws, and said in a harsh voice, mush unlike the elf's..."I am Canis...I am at your...service" He bowed deeply..."though I do not want a drink..."

Kera looked over at Canis and smiled
slightly "friend i know you werent talking to me but befroe you attack some one for hate get to know them first not all drow are creatures of the spider queen." she sighs and goes back to raceing runes on the table wachting them glow as a tiny fire dragon forms as she wacthes it walk around ont eht able not burning the wood brfore she dispells it and stands up brushing herself off.

"Some places on the surface world are warmer than others." Elariel offered her in elven, and he turned to look at the werewolf.

"Canis then.." he nodded, in common this time. "I must apologize.. You are much different than the last werewolf I encountered, I reacted out of memory.."

He winced at the remembered memory, his side momentarily hurting from phantom pains of a wound that was no longer there..

Canis noticed the elf's sudden pain, but said nothing and turned to face the drow.
"Please forgive my...hostility" he growled "but all my encounters with drow have been.....unfortunate, for them and myself" He paused to scratch behind his tattered ear, then continued "you were most lucky drow...if your friend and his bird were not here, then I would have torn you limb from limb....consider yourself fortunate...I have killed many in the past"

Canis then turned away and gathered up the remains of his clothes and put them in his pack. He went through a door, and when he returned was back in human form, and wearing a new set of clothes. He suddenly smiled, and said "Well...how about telling me who you are!"

Kera nodded at the werewolf "Kera Beanre of the first house please to meet you canis." she said with a polite bow of her head before looking around her sorroundings "its cold here to cold for me."

"I see...you are cave dwellers correct?" Canis found a stool and sat "Well I am Canis...I am not aware of a second name...my parents died when I was young, and I have no memory of where I came from or how old I am..." He bowed his head...

Elariel watched him leave and come back, and at once smiled with a light laugh.

"Must be hard on the clothing." he said lightly, going to the bar to claim his wine. "No hard feelings then."

He looked between the two of them. "I have not encountered many drow myself, I have heard only a little of them. But you are an elf, same as me, just from a different part of the world." he said. He listened to Canis' words, and a shadow came across his face. "I am saddened by your past, Canis, it pains me to see others in turmoil.."

Kera nods "canis i'll be glad to help you out my and few sister could help you if you wish." looks back at Elariel "well let me guess you have heard we are evil correct?"

"Something like that, yes." Elariel shrugged, taking a sip of the wine. "I've never met one, not until now.. I have learned to accept all I come across.. you have not earned any hatred from me, kera." He smiled.

Canis looked at the rest of the bar and scowled..."I had no wish to reveal myself...not yet anyway" The rest of the bar were still staring, though he noticed that a few had left "I expect a lot of the people have run off to tell the gaurds of my presence here..." He shrugged and his face saddened "I have no wish for any more violence...if the gaurds come, then I will go with them"

Kera nodded "well when your ready just come and find me and me and amy sister's well help you." she turns back to Elariel "well that is good to know I seek to made freinds not ones who will hate there is no evil in me that i can tell." pets his falcon gently...

Some gaurds came through the door at that moment, almost a dozen, fully armed and armoured, with a captain leading them. The captain demanded that the "monster give himslef up immediately" Canis saddly got up, bowed to Kera and Elariel and walked over to the gaurds with his arms outstretched to be chained...

Kera wachted with saddnes tenseing a little hiding her fangs so she would not but cought "we'll get you out."

Canis had his arms chained behind his back, and was led out of the inn by the gaurds and into the dingy street, where already a crowd had congregated to see the "monster" in his defeat...Canis endured rotton vegetables thrown at him and even a small boy had run up to him and thrown a sign saying "monster" around his neck. The poor werewolf, managed to keep his utter hatred back...he didn't want to be killing small children out of spite...

He was thrown in the town gaol brutally...it was damp, cold and to his nose smelt unthinkably horrid...he collapsed on the floor, unaware that he was changing into his wolfish form...

Canis woke up, his clothes shreds on the floor and made a move to stand. but huge chains had been attached to his arms and legs too thick even for him to break, and they stopped him from standing...

He felt like a rabid dog, treated like filth and vermin...then left to rot until his inevitable execution...

Kera norraws her eyes at his treatment tenseing her muslces letting her fangs extend as she shuts her eyes takeing a deep breath as the air around her becomes dense she open her eyes the silver replaced with a blood red

A girl slowly walked up to the gates and looked up. "how stupid can humans be" she wispered. The guards were no where to be seen. "i'll let myself in then" with that she jumped and gently landed on the ground on the other side of the gate and started to walk to the gathering of humans.

Elariel felt a pinch of anger in his chest at the rough treatment of Canis. He had been among humans long enough to know that they were random at best, one moment being kind and considerate and the next spitting in one's face.

He had seen this kind of treatment before, but it made it no easier to deal with. But what could he do, a single elf? He glanced at those still in the room, looking at Kera last.

"I still do not understand humans most of the time." he frowned. "They gave him no chance to explain himself.."

He eyed the door for sometime, torn as to what to do....

I felt the ora of a werewolve, elf, and drow in the city. "odd mixter" I finally went up to a human girl, "what is happing over there?" I asked. "who are you! Another monster?!" I was shoked did I look that bad. I looked down to see my black pants and white shirt with my trench coat and my army boots and my sword hiden away. "No miss, My names Maito, I came from the east. why do you mistake me for a monster?" The girl blushed and bowed her head. "i'm sorry but with that werewolve fond here I'v been jumpy." I looked at her sharply "did you say werewolve?" "y yes" she studerd 'guess I scared her' a grined at the thought. "thank you" I walk then to the ora of the elf and drow. the ora led me to a very nice looking inn. I stepped in and looked at the two at the conter.

Kera toke a deep breath her red eyes blazed as she turned to Elariel "that was the wrong thing to to treat one in such a way."

"Yes, I know.." Elariel said quietly. "it is the way of humans, Kera, I dont like it any more than you.."

Kera noded "yes but i am going to go visite hmm the porr thing." she stands up ingoreing the cold leaveing her money on the table and walks off to the door

Maito moves out of Kera's way, and walks up to the barmaid. "do you happen to have a room for me? and can I get a glass of water?" she asked quietly keeping her eyes on Kera and Elariel.

Kera walks out of the inn and heads down the road silently glareing at the humans that stare at her

Hatita - still in "barmaid form" nods and goes into the back of the bar to retrieve a glass for the foreigner who entered her inn. She stands out of sight and rethinks her plan. The elf - whom she had at first suspected to be of great magical ability had turned out to be a common elf with a few tricks up his sleeve. She had meant to question him as to the affairs of the elves further north although she doubted now that he would be any use to her.
She cursed herself for being so rash in her decisions. The only good things to come out of this escapade was an interesting fight and now an execution which was bound to be very entertaining ideed; and if it wasnt...she could always make her own fun.
She made a snap decision and dissappeared from the bar. Appearing near the city gaol. She closed her eyes and once more changed her appearance, taking on clothes and figure not dis-similar to the foreign girl, Maito. She altered her face aswell. The soft, attractive plumpness of the barmaid's face was changed and in its place harsh, sharp features and huge angled green eyes. Happy with the change she set out to enjoy the coming events...

Maito quietly drank the water after thanking the barmaid. She kept her eyes on the elf to see what he would do next.

Canis was feeling terrible...a few minutes before, a few men had come in, each holding a cat o' nine-tails and flogged him...The ends were tipped with silver and had caused the flesh on his back to tear...wounds that he knew would leave brutal scars...if he were to live long enough for the wounds to heal...

He began to wonder, despite his pain, when his execution was set for and how long he would have to endure this...agony...

He cursed the cruelty of humans and their barbaric treatment of anything that was...different.

Finally Canis succumbed to the overwhelming pain, bowed his head and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep...
