Kappa

A Japanese water-demon. They're basically turtles with monkey heads. Their head has a hollow in it, filled with water which gives them their abnormal strength. They like to feast on human flesh and blood.

If encountered by one, bow. Being infinitely polite (except when it comes to rending people to pieces), it will bow back, and spill all the water out of its head, thus becoming weak and vulnerable.

However, if you live near a known kappa abode, you can stave off attack by carving your name onto a cucumber and tossing it into the water. Kappa like cucumbers even better than human flesh, and won't eat you.
